I just bought my second pair of Vomeros, and was wondering how many Ks I should log before a marathon. I've currently got 7 pairs on the go (of various Nike shoes) that I rotate - I never run 2 consecutive days in the same shoes.

Dunno about Komeros, but with my Kayanos, I usually wear 'em for a couple of weeks before the race. They are always fine.

Cheers,

For Canberra last weekend I used a new pair of Adrenalines.

No running kms prior, just a 5km walk and some time around the house. No unusual aches or blisters during and after the marathon my legs felt better than after any of my previous 5 marathons.

However I'd only attempt this with a shoe I knew and trusted to be kind to me.

:)

My wife would kill me!!

She draws the line at 3 at a time. At Usually $200 a pop and the holder of the finance key (I'd spend it all on running gear....with no food for the kids) maybe its safer she controls it.

I don't smoke (obviously), only have 2 or 3 beers a month, drive an old Commodore with 400,000+ kms on the clock, don't go to restaurants, and hardly ever buy clothes. I also usually get my shoes from the Nike factory outlet in Melbourne, so my wife doesn't complain too loudly! With the $900 I got from K Rudd, I spent $300 on shoes, and $600 on my teeth :o

Hi Roadrunner

As long as you stick to exactly the same model, you can wear them brand new.
I do it all the time, never had a problem. I must add, mine only last for 3-4 races anyway.
Since there is no leather any more you really wear them only out not in.

i prefer to do at least 2 longer runs in the new boots before using them in a longer race, plus a few shorter speed or other sessions. 100k plus would be my aim. i avoid wearing new shoes to the supermarket 'cause they attract stares :)
you MAY get away with wearing a pair pretty new, but why add an unknown risk into the equaiton when it can be a known and controllable.
good luck in the race!

I didn't think you needed to 'break in' running shoes anymore. For those who like the feel of their sole print indent on the insole maybe wear them a week for your taper runs, but I've gone into many long runs and the odd race on brand-spanking new shoes with nary a problem. Of course though if you're changing brand or model you should definitely try them out, but more I think so that your body is used to any difference in motion rather than for breaking in reasons.

I like shoes best when they're utterly new, I always seem to squish the forefoot down inside long before the heel wears out, and love putting on new shoes that are firm up the front.

Be careful. At the Canberra 50k two years ago I had 2 new pairs of the brand and model I had always used. On the morning of the marathon I cut the tags off one pair and wore them for the first time at the start line of 50k - no dramas and a PB. A week later I put on the other "identical" new pair and got a blister in the 10k near home. Same brand, same model, but a very slight difference.

Therefore, one long run before the 'thon, just to be sure!

For my marathon I wore my brooks trance for about 60-70km before it, probably a little underdone (sounds like a steak) would have liked to have about double that because really didn't get used to them until after the race. Probably also had something do with prep but I'm blaming the shoes. :LMAO:
But they were a new model for me so that may also be a reason.

I wouldn't run a marathon in shoes I hadn't done at least one 30km+ run in but I don't think I'd really care about how many km's they'd done (lower limit obviously)

I have ordered a new pair of Adrenaline ASR's for the Glasshouse 50. I may not have a chance to wear them on any runs before the race. So I am going to pack my regular adrenalines so I can change them at a check point if the others give me grief. Although I do hope that basicly being the same basic shoe (last?) that I wont have any issues.

i have worn new shoes in marathon race, again only models i know and have run in. never had a problem, did it in my last marathon. best to do i think is have one run in em , then put em a side and save em for the race, best of both worlds peace of mind and that new runner feeling. new shoe fever is sure to get u under your pb.
