Hi all,

A mate took me to a meeting about the World Masters Games tonight at Castle Hill RSL. I saw a few runners I recognised from the Striders, SMC and Cool Running. For those who don't know about it the registration date close some time in July.

I just thought I would let you know about it.

For some of us it is a once in a life time opportunity and it is well and truly open to all comers. For $220 you get to go in 5 athletic events and it includes the opening and closing ceremony maybe even the gear. I was fortunate enough to run the Host City Marathon along the Olympic Course in 2000 and finish in the Stadium and never though I would have the opportunity to have that feeling again. I am thinking I am going to to commit -

I knew there was a reason to be happy about getting older. Anyone interested in running and living within easy distance of Sydney - and of course old enough :) would be daft to miss this opportunity. Question is, do I take the whole week off work...?

Anyone over 30 can enter the running events. I am in for the 10k, half, and cross country mid week. A full agenda, should be great.

To me it looks like you only get one race for $220
Or does it mean if you enter Athletics then you can enter lots of races?

Quote

How much is the competition registration fee?
The Sydney 2009 World Masters Games competitor registration fee is AUD220 for which you receive the following benefits:

Entry into one Sydney 2009 World Masters Games sports competition
A Sydney 2009 World Masters Games accreditation pass and sports bag
Free transport on Sydney's extensive network of trains*, buses and ferries
An allocated seat at the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games Opening Ceremony
Entry into the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games Closing Ceremony and other events
Access to the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games Social Hubs located across the city
Entry into the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games Health and Lifestyle Expo
A souvenir-style Sydney 2009 World Masters Games commemorative program
A discount booklet for use at selected Sydney restaurants and tourist attractions
Access to sports injury services at Sydney 2009 World Masters Games venues
A certificate of competitor participation in the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games
A program for each Sydney 2009 World Masters Games sports competition entered

*excludes travel to and from the Domestic and International Airport rail stations

EDIT:
Found it you get 5 events for $220
Crap site to navigate and find info it is all over the place.

To compete in athletics, registration costs AUD220 (inclusive of five in-stadia and all out-of-stadia events - additional events cost AUD5.50 each).

So if you would like to do 5 events a good price I think.

I'm thinking the same.

That adds up to a little over a marathon in a week .... a bit like a soft version of the Warwick Pentath-run :)

So which other event would you think about doing to make up the 5 events.
3000m Steeplechase maybe.
Can a runner just rock up to a steeplechase and expect to do it OK?

Yes but I think there is water involved - not sure I fancy ending up face down over a hurdle in a pool of water watched by thousands.....OK realistically more like a few of my close friends and family - I wonder how many spectators this sort of thing gets - taking the day off work just to watch might be a bit much for some.

Good to see the 10km and HM are both on Sundays

And if we really wanted to we could design some uniforms (min purchase 10) though might be a bit steep at $50 for a singlet

Got to try at least one of the track events just to have run round the stadium - 5000m probably as well as HM and 10k. Stick in the cross country 8km and I just need one more.

I did a 2km steeplechase one sat morning at Masters a couple of years ago. My technique left a lot to be desired as you can imagine having never run one . Imagine my shock when I broke the state age group record ! And no. I didn't fall in the water. Tesso, I don't think it will be a soft option.

I know...I promise I've got one, I meant specific to the Masters - with logo and date etc. I think its the only way you can use the logo.

the usual rule is, that at masters races, where it is about medals etc, You have to wear compulsory uniform of the mesaters club You are a member off,

so state masters club for australians,
and some of states have changed their aproove uniforms just 1-2 years ago so teh old design woukld not do.

I realy doubt You will be allowed to race in coolrunning stuff, but check with organizers first,
specificaly with australian masters athletics, as the game organizers might not have a clue.

:o

You could actually enter more.

Your allowed 5 held totally within the inside the stadium, then all available outside stadium events, so you could enter (subject to clashes) the 10km road race walk, 20km road race walk, 10km road race, 8km cross country, half marathon.

So that would be 10 events. :)

Good warm up for runners in the cross country run would be to do the 10km or 20km race walk beforehand or reverse; subject to final program.

Can anyone open the results for the 8km cross country. I cant get them for the last games in Melbourne.
Need to know if my time would be anywhere near the last place getter the last time.
Would love to compete, but being a beginner, don't want to embarrass myself

$220 for one 8km race- are you sure? That would have to be the world's dearest race per km! NOt everyone would wish to do a pentathlon or wallyathlon or whatever you wish to call it (sounds like fun if you did race in 5 or 6 events over a week- just not everyone's cup of tea)

Come on Long Arms, one event? You must be getting soft! You've got to get your money's worth and do at least one event each day!

Not even close to the world's dearest race when you factor in travel to O/S or interstate events.

From your Home to Homebush is lot cheaper than someone travelling from Europe / USA to Australia or in reverse an Aussie going O/S and competing in a race.

One event is your choice. Hope your athletes give you a hard time.

the big question is how wide is it? and is it like the show jumping where you get so many refusals? can you just run round it if you don't like the look of it?

On a serious note, I am going to enter the 10km and the half marathon (but probably not the steeplechase) :) . Sounds like fun and something to look forward to (and train for!!).

Why do they not have a Marathon at the Master's Games?

.....it feels a bit fraudulent to qualify for the Master's Games at 32! Lucky I'm not even considering it at that price!

You do not have to wear a club uniform at the World Masters Games Athletics, you do not have to be affiliated with a club and nor do you have to be brilliant at any event. I made enquiries regarding this some time ago as I live way out west in NSW and have no affiliation with any NSW Athletics Club. I was advised competitors can wear any clothing to participate.

World Masters Games - once every four years (and probably not in Aus again)
Melbourne Marathon - once a year....and always in Melbourne - I loved the MHM when I did it last year and hope to do the full there one day but World Masters won't come again.

Cheers

Melbourne Marathon is a fine event, but it is on every year.

The World Masters Games are every four, but in far flung places like Vancouver and Addis Abbaba. Ok, I made the Addis Abbaba bit up, but you get the drift.

DO THE MASTERS GAMES. Go on, you know you want to. Plus - value for money? $220 and you can knock yourself out with not one but FIVE events. AND no airfares (and who doesn't hate flying?), bags to pack, hotel bills or taxi fares?

Is anyone going to be at Melbourne Mara?!
Or even Fitzroy Falls (which I am considering)?!

I wonder where the next masters will be... might make a fun holiday depending on the location!

Masters to be held in Parramatta
sportAthletics07 May 09 @ 09:08am by Steven Deare

Parramatta Park will host three events as part of the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games in October, the Minister for Tourism Jodi McKay said.

Parramatta Park will stage the 8km cross country, and the 10km and 20km road walks on October 13.

The Games, contested by mostly mature-aged athletes, are expected to bring 25,000 competitors from across the world to NSW.

Minister McKay said Parramatta was seeing the economic benefits already.

``Prior to Parramatta Park’s selection as a Games venue, competitors and their families have booked more than 3,000 room nights in Parramatta – and 10,000 in western Sydney – through the Games Travel Office,” she said.

From athletics NSW:

Quote

Due to the large number of entries currently being received in Track and Field, the Sydney World Masters
Games Organizing Committee and Athletics NSW will be forced to cap/close entries in certain
events before the official closing date. This is to ensure the meet can be conducted to the
standard expected of an international competition. It should be noted that a number of
events are currently fast approaching this point. ANSW is strongly recommending that members
intending to compete submit their entries as soon as possible, to avoid disappointment.

I have just registered. I can only make events from Friday 16/10 onwards, so have entered the half marathon, 1500m and 400m. Not having done a 400m since school, I am not sure what to expect.

I got that communication from ANSW as well so thought I'd better get my entry in.
Went for the Half, 10km, 5000m, 1500m and 8km cross country. Have never run track before but can't pass up this opportunity. Look for me in heat 25 :yahoo:

Your allowed 5 held totally within the inside the stadium, then all available outside stadium events, so you could enter (subject to clashes) the 10km road race walk, 20km road race walk, 10km road race, 8km cross country, half marathon.

So that would be 10 events. B)

So throw in 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m and steeple in addition to Thomo's list and you are certainly getting bang for your buck.

Good thing your entry also includes "access to sports injury services at Sydney 2009 World Masters Games venues". :yahoo:

Bob Dylan not so easy to translate/interpret. Putting tears in a bottle?

Sooner empty one or more of beer.

Moving on, is it just me or is there so many more choices with running events in this world of the the internet ? I can't make me mind re: these games. Depends.

Cheers,
Swagger.

i'm going for the 400m, will decide between the 200m or 800m depending on how my body holds up to sprinting again.

This very much reflects my sentiments Sean - 2 races, perhaps but that is still $110 per race!
