Can I get it from the HM start tomorrow morning or will I need to sign up again at the school and pay another $45?
Its my fault, I'm just wondering what my options are.
Thanks

Very happy. I knew I was in 3:30-ish shape so headed off at 5 mins pace and tried to stick to it. Did so until the last 10km, which were tough, but managed to hang onto 5:20 for most of it and then took Peterhorse advice to push it with 5km to go if I had anything left. I nearly shit myself, Pete...it's all I had left!
Congrats on your PB's, Simlin, Rundave and DingoOTT
Thanks to the marshals and organisers for their help on the day. Great stuff.
To cap off a good day for me, for the first time ever, I jagged a random draw prize.

Wow. 3:36. Very inspiring. Of course when I saw you Simlin I wished I was doing the full. Never mind. Slow half felt good. I thought the girls I were running with did a top job with 2:03. So much for a training run. They couldn't help themselves. I was suggesting they slowed down early on though they never died and finished feeling pretty happy. They are keen on Melbourne now. Just hope I can keep up. Better not give them any advice just in case I can't. As predicted the I-phone especially at the start was very cringey.

Got a flyer at the start and realised after about 4 km that I needed to slow down or I was in danger of blowing up in the latter stages of the event. Went through first 5 km in 31 minutes, 10 km in 1:03 both of these being my fastest split times in a HM. In fact my 10 km split is a PB for 10 km. The fast times continued through 15 km (1:36:48) which was faster than my River run 15 a month or so ago (1:37:19). Just after 18 km I got a double stitch but I was determined to go for the PB so I kept the foot flat to the floor.
Passed a number of my fellow competitors in the last 3 - 4 km when their endurance ran out and my petrol tank still had something in it which was pleasing. I must be doing something right.

Wasn't the greatest for me, was going really good (4 hrs pace) until 16 to go and the muscle soreness got worse and worse til at 9 to go I, well let's just say I wasn't well. Got a second wind from that but by the 5 to go was feeling horrible again, more walking than running and at 3.5 I couldn't go any further, it was the most painful experience and found out again how many pieces of toast I had for breakfast. My friend had a car at the 4 to go and was so close to getting in it, don't know how I kept moving. Walked until 1.4 to go and did the last km in 5mins (don't know where that came from).
Time of about 4.35.00. Pb of at least 10min so gotta be happy but don't know how it got bad so quickly.
Legs are not too bad and no major injuries yet.

What a relief to hit Santos Stadium - I've never run on that surface before and I just felt so great I accelerated all the way to the finish.
I wasn't sure where it ended but there were timing people stopping me from going further so I thats where I stopped!
All up, the weather was great and there was lot of encouragement from the volunteers.
I made a point of thanking as many of them as I could.
I will definitely do this again next year.

When I finally finished there didn't appear to be any time keepers left. Pete said he thought I'd done 5:45 another random person said maybe 5:50. I of course forgot to start my watch at the rght time or even then to stop it. It will be interesting what time they imagine up.
Thanks to those guys who waited to cheer me on, it was great. Usually by the time I finish there are no spectators, althogh I do expect time keepers.
However I was thrilled to finish my 28th adelaide marathon. Poppa Treason (the legend himself) finished his 31st in 4:50.
Congratulations to all who finished.

I was the big fella. I passed you at the start of the coastal section and then you held your pace better than me over the closing stages and eventually pegged me back..glad I could guide you down the river. I was aiming for 6min/k but let it slip, however I was just happy that I didn't resort to walking this year.
To answer a few questions, The finish line was where the big tear drop banner saying FINISH was.
The race-clock, unfortunately, after working on inspection on saturday decided that it didn't want to work on Sunday...these things happen.
I alerted the Race Director about the disatisfaction with the marathon shirt after Wida's post, so he is now expecting all your constructive critisicm
SARRC have been looking into and even trialed a few timing systems this year, and were all set to use a DAG system (same as C2B) for the marathon, unfortunately the DAG people were unavailable on this particular weekend and it was too late to change the date. I am positive that next year electronic timing will slowly be introduced as online entry has been this year.

So with my 8th City to Bay coming up, I thought i'd better try and get some road race training in and see what pace I could hold. The plan initially was to go out for the first 10k at 5min pace then bring it home at sub 4:30 city to bay pace. But I think 100 meters into the run with every one passing me I decided that holding 4:45 would be more workable, after 2 km though I had settled into a nice 4:39 average pace and felt quite comfortable. My goal also changed slightly, I decided what ever pace I sat at importantly I wanted to finish strongly without blowing up at the end. I have often done in the past by going out far too quickly and hitting red line too early.
I really enjoyed being in control with plenty in reserve, it was a great feeling to be able to pick up the pace in some sections, to watch runners extend their gap in front of me then to reel them in on the back half, I don't think anyone passed me on the last 10k home.
I watched the average pace on the Garmin sit at 4:38 until the 10k mark then slowly in a controlled manner picked up the pace to finish with a 4:36 min / k average over all.
Splits:
4:41, 4:39, 4:37, 4:46, 4:37 (5k - 23:20)
4:41, 4:38, 4:34, 4:41, 4:41 (5k - 23:15)
4:36, 4:36, 4:36, 4:35, 4:34 (5k - 22:57)
4:35, 4:39, 4:36, 4:28, 4:35 (5k - 22:53)
4:15
Total (1:36:50)
The overall time wasn't my fastest half, but honestly it's the best I have ever felt during and after finishing a half. I was wrapped to be able to finish strongly, being able to hold pace, and most importantly negative splitting all 5k segments. The fact that it was 5mins faster than when I ran here on a similar course 3 years ago was also a nice feeling, and I was giving it my all back then.
But the question I went away with was could I have run a pb today if I had of given it my all, or blown up badly in a screaming heap ? Only more experimenting will yield an answer. Hey I may even get to like road racing again.
Fantastic weather for running (well I thought so too), unusual for me I didn't drink or take on fuel the whole way, maybe the cool weather helped there.
Loved the course, especially the section along the beach and the Torrens. The weird start around the back streets wasn't as bad as what I thought it was going to be looking at the map with North to the left for some reason. I was lucky to be able to pass most of the 10k pack on the wider roads at about the 7k to go mark, otherwise I could imagine that this may have caused some heavy traffic for those that hit them on the narrower Torrens bike path.
Nice to finish the event once again at Santos amongst a great atmosphere, great to have a quick chat to David Close too volunteering his services for the day. Had a quick word to Treason, who seemed a bit unhappy about his run, but a great time nonetheless. Saw Cakey come in but unfortunately we had to head off and I was getting a tad cold by then too, so sorry if I didn't catch everyone else at the end.
The strangest thing I saw for the day was when we had hit the path along the Torrens for the first time, a fully rugged horse went straight into the Torrens rug and all and proceeded to swim across to the other side to join all his mates. Was an amazing sight seeing the rug and the horses head bobbing up and down in the water as it crossed.
Negatives for the day (please take note SARRC):
On entry, I had paid for a bus ticket from Santos to the start of the half, and had elected to collect my race number from the start at the High school. Arrived at Santos with plenty of time, saw a few of the Marathoners off, but went to get on the bus and wasn't allowed on the bus without a bus ticket !
There was a group of us left standing in the cold that had paid for a bus ticket online but as we had opted to collect our numbers at the destination of the bus journey we didn't actually have tickets. The somewhat aloof SARRC official didn't want to know about us and told us to wait in the cold to see if he could fit us on, but in the meantime was happy to accept payment of $6 to allow people to jump straight on the bus. In the end he said he could take 7 runners, and there was a mad rush to the bus and we were off. I don't know how many missed out. But the whole process seemed poorly organised. I mean at the least the official could have had a list of those that had paid for bus tickets. The people paying cash were effectively queue jumping those that had prepaid on line but not received their tickets.
On arrival at the high school, there was a whole hall to collect race numbers and for late entry, but the tables were set up far too close to the hall entrance forcing the end of the queue out side in the cold and to block the door ways. There was also an issue with runners waiting in the wrong queues for race number collection as it was impossible to tell from outside which was which. For next year, put the tables up against the walls with signs on the wall for late entry or race number collection, - simple.
During the run a few of us were almost collected on one roundabout where there was no police presence, a car just came straight through at us from the right expecting us to get out of the way. It was on Parker st, the last round about before the left turn at the end. We were also abused by a cyclist riding flat out coming towards us along the Torrens bike path expecting everyone to clear the track for him. Couldn't he see there was an event on ? I mean everyone moved but it was like we were trespassing on his turf.
My last beef was the lack of a timing clock at the finish line, sure it may have been based on Marathon time, but those of us waiting for friends in the event would have loved to have known what times runners were finishing at. Edit: just read your post Simlin, unfortunate that the clock was faulty, but surely a group such as SARRC would have a contingency plan to source another clock ? If they don't they should perhaps look into it.
But as always the positives by far out weighed the negatives, and hopefully i'll be back again next year.

Just on the constructive critisism front....the last few roundabout were a problem without marshals. A car was nice enough to wait for me as I wobbled past but having marshaled last year; the number of people that are signed up for marshal duties then didn't show coz it looks a bit bleak outside was alarming. Not much the organisers can do and I suspect they know there are spots out there but it's too late to fill them.
It was a typical SARRC event; not all things go to plan but the marathon still has that old fashioned, run by well meaning amateur feel about it.
The only thing that I think was poorly organised was the stations from 25km to 35kms running out of Gatorade. Just when you really needed it, they didn't have it. Apparently the half marathoners ( chilli's lying...) drank it all but it was cold out there; they should have had plenty.

I thought it odd that the 2 prior crossings had a police presence, but there was no one at all on that last one, hence our awareness was down. As I mentioned I haven't run one for a while, but I was under the assumption that we were on a closed course, hence didn't have to worry about giving way to traffic. I suppose what I am saying is that the announcer at the start should have perhaps mentioned that maybe all roads were not completely closed, but I do understand where you are coming from if SARRC are relying on volunteers to control smaller roads, makes it tough if they are short on the day.

Not lying, promise, I enjoyed counting the number of people I passed stopping for a drink and I have a number of witnesses from 2 different pubs that saw me spend all afternoon trying to rehydrate.

I ran with a lot of people enjoying their portable music and it makes it difficult to chat - it makes it even harder for faster runners and overtaking cyclists to make themselves heard.
Access to toilets in Henley High School was a bit lacking but the crowd quickly drops away as people line up for the gun.
My brother marshalled at two different spots on the day and also attended some police training on Saturday - that's a pretty big commitment - thanks Mark. I expect SARRC don't make much money out of an event like this but there must be something that could be offerred to get marshalls available? A free entry to a future SARRC event?
Well done to SARRC and the running public who made it all possible.

One of the things that impressed me about the 2008 Melbourne event was that the volunteers had a special tee shirt. I guess that is one of the advantages of running a much larger event than Adelaide.

A few things about the race organisation. The clock breakdown was just bad luck, but could have been mentioned at the start line. As in previous years, several km markers were out of place. This should be rectified by blacking out all previous marks each year before putting down new ones so there is no confusion (unless the course is identical). Marshals were in place in most important places, but a few were missing. Perhaps some backup signs at each marshal position would help with no-shows. I think the drink situation just needs some slight adjustment for greater quantities near the end.
