hey guys,

i had my district (port curtis) cross country trials today. I ran the 6k in the 16year age group, but we also ran with the 17s and opens.
The track was a two lap 3k circuit around a golf course. The track wasnt too bad, but some parts were hard.
I was feeling good going into the race and was hoping for a place. The start was good, i got out front early so as not to
get caught behind the slower racers. After about 1k me and two others in the 17s and opens were leading. So i was coming first
for the 16s at that point. This was pretty much the same all through the race. After the first lap i was at 11:57 and still feeling good.
I started to feel fatigued in the second lap, but still pulled out a good time ending up with 24:14mins for the 6km.

I was really happy with this as i won my age group (16's) and came second overall. Now i have to go away for the regional trials
in two weeks. I am absolutly stoked and i cant wait!!!

CJ,

Great work. Obviously what you're doing is working well for you. Get a good nights sleep, drink enough water, eat properly and get a recovery jog in tomorrow.

Don't forget to have some fun though. Enjoy life while you're young. You don't have to get mixed up in the rubbish that heaps of kids drift towards.

A couple of good sessions over the next 10 days and you'll be ready for regionals.

Well done CJ, that's a good effort.  I hope you do well at the next level.  Keep an eye on those splits too and be careful you don't go out too hard.

Hey guys,

yeah it is about time i reported back here with my regional trials. And the fact is i didnt go  :D  I fell sick the day before the trials and the night before i was up all night with vomiting and diarroeah (sorry a bit of TMI). Anyway, the trials were held near mackay and we were supposed to catch the bus up there with the rest of the team at about 3 in the morning.

But being as sick as i was i obviously didnt bother. I was really really cranky because i thought i had worked hard and had great preperation for it and i was rearing  to go the week before. So my mum rang up the team manager and told her that i couldnt make it. And she asked if i wanted to nominate myself for the team anyway. And i didnt know you could do this but you can. Anyway she told us that seeing as i came first at the preivous trials i had a good chance of making it. This cheered me up heaps.

At about 1 that afternoon we got a call back from her saying that i had made the team and that i would be going to the state trials in toowoomba. I was really happy now! still sick. but happy. It wasnt quite as satisfying as going up there and running but i still  made it. So now Im going to state trials in toowoomba in July. Im not expecting to get anything, but it will be a great experience. Im excited!!

Good approach CJ. Stick at it with your training. Be consistent. Make a plan for your race, and stick to that too. Set a goal and achieve it, maybe a pb, if a place happens at the same time that's a bonus.

Good Luck CJ and I hope you exceed your expectations! Most of all enjoy it!!!
I run my very first cross country race on Sunday and I expect to fall over, lose a shoe and get flogged by a bunch of little kids...but I know I will enjoy it :D

I will see you there CJ i think we may even be in the same race 15yrs ? Jack curran will win again but im hoping for second or third with a bit of luck, will be a great race. top ten get to go to Nowra for nationals so give it a good shake  :D

Good luck CJ and Love2Run! As I'm a NSW girl I won't see unless we all get to Nationals... Which would be awesome.

This Saturday a lot of my xc training group are heading to Nowra, for some sort of last chance regional for those who missed out at their proper regionals. My friend is freaking out  because she went around and asked everyone what the course is like, and heard horror stories of the winners running 18 min for 4km and having to walk up hills during the race...
From this I can probably safely conjecture that the race is very hilly. So much the better.
What day is your state trials?

Welcome to CR. Our state trials are on the 26 and 27th of July at toowoomba. So it will be freezing cold... When are ur state champs?? what age are u running in?

Thanks for the welcome! I've been a visitor for ages and ages, and have only just worked out that I could join without typing in Mastercard numbers of something. So I'm really excited to finally be able to say things.
My state champs are on the 31st July, so we'll be peaking, tapering etc. round about the same time. I'm running in the 16yrs. I loved your story about how you've gotten into running, and improved so quickly. I'm sort of the same, It's only the last year and a half that I've become really serious and committed about running.  
Oh.. You've just added me to your Frineds. How nice is that? I feel so welcome. I can't figure out how to add people.

And yeah ive only been running for a year but i already cant remember what it was like when i didnt run  :huh:

No, this is my first State. I made it to Regionals in Year 7 and 8 but I hated running then. I used to do heaps of triathlons but I was terrible with nerves. So I dreaded cross country races, and both times I went to Regionals I was a terrible failure, coming fifthieths'. I psyched myself out every time. Then I wouldn't run for ages. I only started liking it when I picked up running again just as a personal fitness thing, and now I love it. I didn't even tell myself 'oh, you might make State', because I thought it might jinx me. All I was hoping for in the very back of my head was maybe, just maybe, a top twenty...
But I came 3rd, ran a huge PB and battled for 2nd the whole way. I was fairly destroyed by the last 500m and my parents had snuck onto this off limits pavilion where they could see better, and they were yelling that 4th was catching up. I knew I'd got State in the bag but I thought, no, I'm 3rd, that's my medal, sorry. It was awesome because it was such a surprise to place well.
From reading your story it didn't sound like you'd made State before, so is it your first time, too?
You must be so grateful that you've still got a chance to get to State, even though you missed your race. Must've been incredibly disappointing.

Fastguts, how did you go in your race? Were you unpleasantly swamped by kids?

Hi marmiduke and cj, i will add you both as friends if you dont mind as well. Marmiduke i came 25th at my first allschools xcountry then after a year of full training came 5th last year and this year at QA allschools i finally got a medal so never give up. It does take years to scratch to the top. you will do it, just keep training and dont over do it, rest is important, if not more important than hard training. I have one girl in my squad who is 13 and this is her first year of states. She didnt believe in herself either, she came 13th at QA allschools so just needs to climb a couple to get in top 10. A lot of girls think running is "uncool" but we all know different  :D

Thanks for the encouragement, Love2Run. Congratulations to the max for your medal this year... I guess when you've worked so hard and wanted it so badly it must feel so great to have finally got there.
One thing I don't understand, though, is what QA All Schools is? Because in NSW, what we call All Schools is State. But as I understand it State shouldn't have been run yet in QLD or anywhere, isn't State on the 27th of July? Or am I mixed up?
Yeah, I know I've got to avoid overtraining. Its hard because my legs etc can handle the speed training pretty well now, so its getting harder to find reasons for a rest day. Also, I've lately developed a tendency to turn even a gentle run into a tempo session... Actually every session this week has been pretty hard... Luckily I've got an overbearing mother who watches my training like a hawk and has a fit if I try to sneak off and train on a day that I've promised to rest.
I know what you mean about lots of girls thinking running is uncool. Nobody at my school runs properly, there's been a few times in PE when I've had girls comment on my sinewy calves with disdain...
You know what's really annoying? Obnoxious rugby players who say that running isn't a real sport. Who can't even run the whole way to the canteen to buy burgers and coke for recess to bulk themselves up with... I suppose I shouldn't generalise with rugby players. But that's what many of them are like.

Umm im actually not quite sure either! I think that all schools one is organised through QLD Athletics and the other States is organised by Secondary School Sport!
Thats what i thought it was anyway! Love2Run would know he has done both??

yess i hate that alot!!! But its not just footy players that says it isnt a sport! Another thing that is annoying is when people find out that u do
distance running they think ur a freak! One that i get alot is "Why do you bother, whats the point?" !!!!! Really irritating!

Yeah most states send two teams to nationals. The school has first pick so they take the top six and QA ( queensland athletics ) send another team. This is how i made nationals last year i missed the school states in Rockhampton so got another chance as i came 5th at QA all schools xcountry championships. I know its a little confusing but two teams from each state go. The main difference is the athletics state team dont do the relay or time trial at nationals just the main race. Thats why it is important to compete in both races in your state just in case you are sick or cant do one of them or race badly in one, it gives you an extra chance to make nationals. They have different state uniforms for each team as well. The same thing happened at track states, i came 5th at states for 3000mtrs and didnt make the school team. Then later i made the qualifying time and went with Queensland Athletics anyway. like if you look at the athletics NSW website they held the NSW xcountry championships today, and i think had you competed you could have made nationals this way as well ( if this is the right event). Its just an extra way to represent your state, remember it for next year as it is better than missing nationals  :D

Hi Marmiduke, thanks for asking.
I arrived at the venue but just before I got there I was sick in the car...not too good when you're driving.
So I felt massively unwell and stinky and subsequently didn't run.
I would have preferred to be swamped by pocket rockets...Bless them!

That's too bad. For cross country, the idea is to be sick on your nearest rival, just before the start. Put's 'em off no end.

I did a pb of 17:43 in the 5k at Lake Wendouree. Feeling that i am lacking a little power in the legs think i may be getting a little to thin

With the distances you do I think you've maybe got to consider that your current body composition is maybe not coping well, due to physiological reasons. Perhaps you might want to try throwing the scales a way for a bit, and just eating as if you were carbo loading, maybe even have four (Gasp, I know) days off... Have you lost weight? Still, that pb is really impressive, well done. Obviously your training is doing something right!
Fastguts- I'm so sorry you couldn't run, when you'd got to the venue and everything... Did you travel far? Still, there's plenty of similar races, I suppose. Your debut will be all the sweeter.
Love2Run, I did know about the Nowra run, and you're right, it was a Nationals qualifier. I had a friend who went, and she said it was huge, and extremely competitive. She's a decent runner who had missed out at Regionals, and she came well, well down the pack. Apparently there is one hill that is about 60m but extremely steep, and she was very proud to tell me that she resisted the urge to touch it with her hands. Now the mental image I got from that phrase- she's running upright, and the hill is almost vertical- is a fairly interesting one! Very scenic and interesting course, with truly diverse terrain, 'not just paddocks', to quote my friend. My coach had told me to go to this, just to get a feel for the course in case I make Nationals, but unfortunately I was inextricably engaged with non-running activities. Oh well. The second fastest girl in my squad came 24th overall and collapsed in tears at the finish... The competition was extremely stiff, so I don't think that this race would have been my fastrack to Nationals!
I had a fun run on today anyway, so I didn't mind so much not being able to go. Bellthorpe, I think someone used your strategy twice within a five metre spread of asphalt at the 5km mark at the Woy Woy to Gosford Bay to Bay today...

haha that run at Nowra sounds painful!!! Probably lucky you had stuff on marmiduke because it sounds pretty rough!

lol i have a genetics exam tomorrow. I think i would prefer that to an essay.

hey finny, i noticed you mentioned in ur blog that u've been told to drop the volume and increase the pace. if ur feeling your lacking power this is probably the worst thing to do. you would be a lot better to maintain a strong volume with long runs to build up your strength. there's a saying that you have to be "fit to train". there's no point pumping out fast sessions when your not fit enough yet. you may feel fit but it takes years to build a solid base of fitness. dont jump into the fast stuff too quick.

How are you pulling up after the run, Finny? Sore?
Thanks for asking CJ, I did a 51.15 for 12km. 1800 runners at Central Coast, nice weather. Unfortunately it was all on concrete paths, and I'm still really sore- not used to the hard surface. I train on grass for speedwork, and everything else on roads that barely qualify as tarred, so my legs just aren't used to the hard concrete, maybe. 8th out of all the women, so that's good. Went out too fast, though, 3.50 for first k. I got nearly every km split on my watch, so exciting.
Sorry about posting twice. How'd your exam go? Did you know that through the amazing potential benefits of genetic engineering, parents may one day be able to effectively 'refine' their children mentally and physically? So that, (theoretically), if your baby naturally has the, say, 'put on weight easily' gene, or, 'can't run fast' gene, or 'gets nervous near sinks' gene, scientists can just somehow manufacture good DNA that will correct these flaws.
What are the implications this has for athletic achievements? There will have to be two categories- genetically modified 'people', and 'natural' athletes (those whose genetic makeup has not been tampered with.) Perhaps the genetically modified bunch will be banned from the Olympics- they'll have to test everyone to make sure that they're natural.

Hello to CJ and Love2Run and everyone else... When does Term 2 end for you guys? My school ends next Friday. Then I'll have three weeks of holidays, in which I'll have so much more time to run... Maybe I'll be able to do two a days, if my parents become blind suddenly.
I've got a five-day school camp coming up, a 'Snow' camp (I think it may entail more things than just snow, possibly Parliament House) in Canberra. However, I have been given permission to continue training during the free time we get, so that's okay. I hate having days off.

i finish school tomorrow, then of to sunshine coast for a week. Wont be much sun this time of year, should be called the cloud coast lol. What i love about the coast tho is being able to do some long runs along the beach, its ace. Marmiduke if you have a choice give the national zoo a miss in canberra its pretty lame, all the animals look over 80 and half dead lol. And if you do run twice a day on yur hard days ( which i do when i can) do speed, like short hills or short reps in the morning and something like 20 min tempo in the evening. That way you get the best of both worlds but shouldnt take forever to recover from it. But you shouldnt do intervals, and tempo or reps on the same day. Or do AM hard and Pm easy recovery then next day am recovery jog pm tempo. Every now and them i do two hard days in a row followed by two easy days and its ussually 2 weeks before a big race. It helps you reach a peak and if its track season it means you will recover beter than most when you have many heats and races in a row. God im as bad as you at waffling on. haha have fun on holidays

Had my last two exams today both maths B. Looking forward to the holidays aswell. I mite try doing two training
sessions in one day also. Ive also got track coming up so doing speed training for that mite help for cross country.
Good work on your fun run. I get the same after running on concrete. Its alot harder on the legs then bitumen and grass.

yeah?

i usually do either:
4 or 5 x 1000m @ 3:40 - 3:45 with 2min rest         or;
10 - 12 x 400m @ 1:15 - 1:18 with 1min rest.

The other night i felt like shit and i just decided to see how fast i could do 1km. I dont usually skip interval training,
but i made an exception that day!

CJ, do you run these Intervals with anyone else? e.g. an athletics club? And do you run them on a track?
I think the 400m reps would be really beneficial, and the 1km would have to help, I guess, but maybe you should try doing more of the shorter, faster intervals- less rest- to really pick up on your speed.
It's took me ages to get out of this fairly newbie attitude I had that 'more distance = more fitness'; I used to do no intervals work, apart from 12x 1min pick-ups on 10-14km runs... Becuase I had this weird conviction that if I did what I now know as quality speedwork (hard efforts, say 2min flat out round an oval, then rest for a min) then I wouldn't be running as much distance in that session, and that, therefore, it was more beneficial for my fitness to just go out and run for an hour and a half. Which is rubbish. Additionally, I was so stupid that I thought if one day I ran 100 min, then if I wanted to keep being able to run 100min then I'd better do it the next day... which means I have old training logs where I have run 20+kms four days in a row... Which was stupid. And now, I am furiously training with my speedwork (and still a healthy chunk of distance per week) to try and undo the way all that distance seems to have slowed me down.
Thanks for the advice, Love2Run, on two-a-days, and on that Canberra Zoo advice. But I'm kind of confused- are you sure you weren't talking about Parliament House? :D
And as to the comment on waffling on... I'll take that as a compliment. My waffling capacity improves everytime I post on CR.
I'm running the Woodford to Glenbrook 25k tomorrow! Joy! It'll be the longest race run I've ever done... And then the next day I have my school athletics carnival. Oh, one more thing to waffle on about, just to annoy Love2Run. I've just ordered my Full Uniform for State, including the Glorious Tracksuit, which is probably not at all interesting to Love2Run, who has qualified before. But I am Very Excited. 34 days!

No i run them by myself. Thats why sometimes my motivation is not always there. But i do them on a grass track at either my high school or the AFL oval.
I have been doing intervals for only 4 or 5 months now, and i used to only do 400m intervals but then i tried the 1000m and i liked them because they
didnt feel like an all out sprint but more of a fast paced rhythm.

But that parliament house comment was pretty funny ( after i figured it out lol)
C.J  the longer the race you are training for the longer the intervals. 1k intervals are seriously benificial this time of year. Xcountry season the reps get longer, the intevals and hills get longer and the days get shorter haha. And obviously marmiduke hasnt got any competition at her school. Who does a 25k race the day before school sport ? A bloody good runner thats who  :D
oh yeah, i can remember getting my state uniform, i still get goosbumps when i have to wear it. The tracky is awsome, the QLD colors rock ;)

Yep, I'm keen... It was a bush run, with a really relaxed sort of atmosphere. 25km, so I thought I'd just run it how I feel, not going for a time or anything. People had told me about how hilly and hard it was, so I thought I'll treat it like a training run. I had no idea what my time was going to be like... but I went through 20km in 1 hour 34 min, which is my half mara pb, and I hadn't been paying much attention to my watch. I was thinking I'd come in at about 2 and a half hours, but I ended up with 1 hr 55 min and around 15 secs, so I'm very pleased with that! I took off at my easy long run pace, and sped up in the last 12km, which was mostly downhill. It was nowhere near as hard as I'd expected in terms of hills. I took the hills really well, but discovered that, in comparison to some of the ultra-experienced women and men, I am really slow at running downhill... My calves and knees are a bit sore, but not as bad as the 12km last week. However, maybe on Tuesday I'll start to feel worse... I had water and gatorade at every aid station, and a detestable power bar, so I finished feeling fine. I came first in the 15-19 category (doubtlessly because I was the only one! :D ) and was given a very nice trophy, a bit of an arty one made out of glass, and a Careflight bear that's wearing a little cycling helmet (those pointy aerodynamic ones) and a lycra suit. This is because the event was sponsored by Careflight, and was a run/ride sort of event. Very fun... CJ, a round of applause for training intervals on your own. My coach has set me to do two 4-5k runs a week at race pace, by myself. I've got a 4.4 k course marked out. But these runs are the absolute toughest thing about my training... Because there is absolutely no one else to help me with motivation. But the last one I did was a five sec pb, that was on Friday... Keep at it! Much respect!

This is totally our thread. Probably the adult CRs don't even read it. Like a kids' menu.
If any other CRs want to join in though, you're very welcome obviously. I'm not unusually sore at the moment, I think I'll be fine for tomorrow. Yes, it is totally your thread; but us adults get a total buzz out of how you guys are handling yourselves.

Sometimes you'll hear us whinging about how other sports steal the cream of athletics (being you guys) from under our noses. Reading you talk about your training and love of running keeps us fresh.

Awww Craig, thanks for the encouragement. Hopefully we'll all still be running and posting on CR in twenty years time. Unless Finny takes up professional AFL, Love2Run makes it big in synchronised swimming, and CJ is irretrievably poached into the intense 'sport' of fishing. But you can count on me at least. I'll run until Death or Nature forbids me... (Stuff uni, better start saving for knee surgery. )

I Came 2nd In My Regionals/Zone Back Last Month But Victoria Is Doing There Selection All Through The All Schools This Year So I Didn't Go To Eastern Zone Instead I Will Do All Schools I Will Have To Run Low 20's For 6k To Make It. My Age Group Is Fairly Strong
I Will Hopefully Go 21 Flat On July 18
