Thanks, Julian. I don't think I understand, though.
So: is it the first six in All-Schools State who go to nationals representing NSW schools, as opposed to the next six placegetters, who represent Athletics NSW? How can you represent Athletics NSW if you aren't a member? Are the teams selected from the same race (the one I'm going to), or was the Athletics NSW team selected from that Nowra race? Sorry, I'm conufsed... I'm also confused.
But basically you're saying that top twelve go?
I hope school was good. Sincerely.

Hi Marmiduke
The way it works is that from the U/14's to U/20's, each State is represented by two teams at the Australian Cross Country Championships. One team represents the Schools and the other team represents the State Athletics Associations (eg, ANSW).
The Schools team is selected from the NSW All Schools XC Championships and let's say you are in the U/16 age group, the 6 fastest finishers from the 14 years and 15 years races will make up the 6 member U/16's NSW All Schools XC team. In theory, you could win the 14 years race and be the 7th fastest finisher from the combined age groups and miss out on selection in the Schools team. These athletes will run in the individual race on the Saturday as well as the XC Relays on the Monday of the Championships.
To gain selection in ANSW team to compete at the Australian Cross Country Championships you need to nominate via the ANSW website and compete at the ANSW XC Championships in Nowra, State Road Championships and State Short Course XC. This means you need to be a member of an ANSW Club or receive dispensation from ANSW to compete as an "Unattached" athlete if you are from, say, a remote country area where there is no club, etc. ANSW will then make a selection from the nominations based on performances at those events. The first two finishers in the age group races at the ANSW XC Championships in Nowra are "automatic" selections provided they nominate. The best advice I can give you is to check out the ANSW website and click on the "On-line entry" button and follow the link. The ANSW athletes only compete in the individual XC race on the Saturday at Nationals.
Many athletes will nominate for the ANSW team as a back up in case they miss out on School selection. If they then make it through in the School team, they have the option of withdrawing their nomination for the ANSW team or pass up on the School team.
I hope this helps you.
