But Victoria Is Doing There Selection All Through The All Schools This Year So I Didn't Go To Eastern Zone

That's a shame.  Didn't realise that.  My daughter just made it through to Melbourne running at Eastern Zone.  We are new to Vic though, just learning how it all works down here.

When/where/what is All Schools?

Yeah It Has Only Changed This Yr

Saturday July 18th At Bundurrua

All Schools Is Incorpatrated With Th Athletics Victoria Cross Country Championships There Pick 2 Teams One Is The Av Team And One Is The Vsssa Team.

But It Is Different For The Primary Schools So If Your Daughter Is In Primary School Then She Just Needs To Continue Through The Way She Is.

Yes! A second page!
Finny, I'm a bit confused. Don't the states always choose their teams from All-Schools? I actually don't understand where the little athletics clubs come in. Were you pleased with your Zone second?
I think that XC is much more competitive for boys than girls, at the lower levels at least. The girls who I've run against so far are for predominantly netballers who can jog a little.
Oh, I did my athletics carnival today. 1500m was first up, and I warmed up really well, and my legs actually felt way better. I ran really well, considering everything; qualified for Zone in the 200m and upwards events. So Zone is going to be exhausting.

Well, I've managed to get some good mileage in this week, largely thanks to my big run on Sunday. By Thursday my muscles were still aching really bad, but I feel completely recovered today. Lately I've been going to both squad xc sessions, but I wasn't able to go to either of them this week because the person whom I carpool with was sick, and because on Monday I had my athletics carnival. I was sad.
Yesterday, though, was a great morning workout. My mum's a swimming coach, and I used to swim these sessions, until I discovered the joys of the treadmills of the gym that is next to the pool. So I do intervals- oh, actually fartleks I suppose. And yesterday I did 3min intervals at hard pace (17kph, few seconds faster than my goal race pace for 4km) then 2 min at 12kph, did four reps. Also did some leg presses for the first time. Do you guys do any running related weights work?
Another sad thing is that today I had to babysit /give a riding lesson to my 8 year old neighbour and her younger sisters, who all have swine flu. It would be so, so bad to get swine flu right now, or anytime, but especially now. My mother's advice was 'just turn away when she coughs'.

If I get swine flu and it interferes with my training/state/health I will be devastated. I might even be dead. If so, I want to be buried in my state uniform, the uniform that I never got to wear because I died before the race was on.

This is the usual for Vic secondary schools.

The All-Schools are held at Bundoora and are in age groups U/14, U/16, etc.
Based on the results 2 teams are selected, the VSSSA team (schools) and the AV team (clubs).

VSSSA gets priority on the top 6 athletes and AV gets the next 6 but you can choose to go with either. The VSSSA stay for a longer period, is more structured and you get to run in relays on a different day to actual nationals against other states. You also go sightseeing and stuff.VSSSA costs alot more and is kinda based more on the experience. The AV team is there to race, you just race once in the Nationals individual race and go home.

This pretty much means if you make top 12 at all--schools you'll make nationals UNLESS there are awesome runners that have proof they deserve to be on the team and couldn't compete because of illness or other suitable reasons. top 10 is usually a certainty.

Hey..isn't that what running is all about "Running better than your best" You can and will do it Finny. As soon as you let self doubt or any kind of doubt creep in you set yourself up for dissapointment,
I dont mean being unrealistic with targets i just mean you must believe you can do it.
Last years times have nothing to do with this year, its a "Guide" only. Its all about how you do on the day and that has a lot to do with confidence.

Before every race i briefly look around at my opposition and say to myself " you guys are gonna pay for all my hard work in training" sometimes they do pay, sometimes only some of them pay, but it helps me focus and dig every last stride out. Racing is the most important part for us young guys, its why we train, when the gun goes you have to be animal like and driven. That way no matter where you come it sets the stage for next time. Go get em Finny, live the dream  :vava:

She didn't make it this year but as she said her placing this year was as good as going anyway . This is her first year being in the top 10 therefore on the reserve bench so good on her. EAch year she gets closer and closer and we really do have some great runners in her region and age group

She did win her school 1500 yesterday with a pretty good PB to boot so that is a really good start to the track season. 800 and 400 today. So she will be off to districts with 800 an 1500 at least .

cheers

Hey Benny
Is she first or second reserve? Great result, but she must be disappointed a little. Frustrating to be so close. Is she more of a track or xc runner?
Also, I'm a little embarassed to ask, but does anyone know how many would go to Nationals in NSW? Is it top eight? It's funny, but I'd always assumed top eight and never asked anyone, but I have a feeling it may be twelve or ten. Just wondering... :vava:

At this stage she is a jill of all trades but mistress of none.

She likes both XC and Track equally

3rd reserve but one pulled out on the regional day  so that  made her 2nd reserve in the end. She was a bit dissaopointed but she was also as happy as the proverbal pig with her result this year.

She cleaned up in the 800 and 400 today as well so she will have a busy districts competion.

Also, I'm a little embarassed to ask, but does anyone know how many would go to Nationals in NSW?
Like most states they send two teams of Six, Top six in each state race go with schools and next 6 get to go with Athletics NSW, or VIC, or QLD etc so twelve in all from each state.

Thanks, Julian. I don't think I understand, though.
So: is it the first six in All-Schools State who go to nationals representing NSW schools, as opposed to the next six placegetters, who represent Athletics NSW? How can you represent Athletics NSW if you aren't a member? Are the teams selected from the same race (the one I'm going to), or was the Athletics NSW team selected from that Nowra race? Sorry, I'm conufsed... I'm also confused.
But basically you're saying that top twelve go?
I hope school was good. Sincerely. :vava:

Hi Marmiduke

The way it works is that from the U/14's to U/20's, each State is represented by two teams at the Australian Cross Country Championships.  One team represents the Schools and the other team represents the State Athletics Associations (eg, ANSW).

The Schools team is selected from the NSW All Schools XC Championships and let's say you are in the U/16 age group, the 6 fastest finishers from the 14 years and 15 years races will make up the 6 member U/16's NSW All Schools XC team. In theory, you could win the 14 years race and be the 7th fastest finisher from the combined age groups and miss out on selection in the Schools team. These athletes will run in the individual race on the Saturday as well as the XC Relays on the Monday of the Championships.

To gain selection in ANSW team to compete at the Australian Cross Country Championships you need to nominate via the ANSW website and compete at the ANSW XC Championships in Nowra, State Road Championships and State Short Course XC.  This means you need to be a member of an ANSW Club or receive dispensation from ANSW to compete as an "Unattached" athlete if you are from, say, a remote country area where there is no club, etc.  ANSW will then make a selection from the nominations based on performances at those events.  The first two finishers in the age group races at the ANSW XC Championships in Nowra are "automatic" selections provided they nominate. The best advice I can give you is to check out the ANSW website and click on the "On-line entry" button and follow the link. The ANSW athletes only compete in the individual XC race on the Saturday at Nationals.

Many athletes will nominate for the ANSW team as a back up in case they miss out on School selection.  If they then make it through in the School team, they have the option of withdrawing their nomination for the ANSW team or pass up on the School team.

I hope this helps you.

The above post stopped me from having stress over how to explain it lol, it does sound complicated but its not. Just that if you go with state athletics team you dont get to do the time trial or relays, just the main race, which is what i did last year. This year im going on school team ( unless i trip over and break my ancle at states  :vava: ) so will get to do relays yay

here is the link from QLD ath website about the two pathways of selection, its just that schools team have first choice but the athletes can choose to go with either team if they come top 6 at states,

http://www.qldathlet...ionCriteria.pdf

there would be a similar description on ANSW website
cheers
