I'm currently doing moderate to high intensity running training (no specific speed work). This week I've totalled 84 kms, and plan to peak at 100 kms at the end of August. Then I'm heading off to Europe in mid September for an 8 week holiday. After recovering from the jetlag, I'm hoping to do some recreational cycling on some big climbs (Galibier etc) for 7 to 10 days with an English friend. My question is, can I get any reasonable cycling fitness in the 3 week period from the end of August until I leave for my holiday (I currently don't have time to do any cycle training)? If yes, what sort of training would be most beneficial?

Cheers!
PS I meant what sort of cycle training would be most beneficial - sorry for the confusion!

ld say no, totally different muscles. you would have the engine, but engines dont work to well without wheels. if u dont have time to start asap then, it will be your problem. what sort of training would be beneficial, mmmmmmm try cycling that might help. p.s. when in the stand up mode up the mountains you prob wont suffer to much its kinda a bit like running . :D

I would suggest to do some exrcises, focused on strenght and strenght endurance, very high volume reps - working it up into few hundreds :

squats
lower back hyperextension bench
calves rises and drops
biceps, triceps
shoulders
pushups

Crikey! Nothing like starting small!
As a rider who is challenged by the smallest of inclines, I wish you well :D

The next time you're in Victoria, you should check out Mt Baw Baw. A few years ago (when I was bike fit), I managed to claw my way up the 6 kms of 12% gradient. I've done Hotham twice, along with other Australian climbs, so I know what I'm in for :D
I think the biggest hassle might be the weather!

ride up hills . lol. i ride probably about 20,000 a year. run about 5,000 a year. i can have only a couple of weeks off the bike and i lose my cycle legs.( as i am right now as i am training 4 gcm). most my mates who are either pro or A grade cyclists . train hills for strength doing hill repeats in the big chain ring, but if u cant do at least say 85 rpm u prob should be in thhe small chain ring. most imporantly u need to sit on a bike. good luck .

You could be right! If the suffering gets too much, I'll head across to the Oktoberfest :D
