Hi, I stumbled apon this thread from the marathon thread - and have to say I agree with what you say loubee.

I would also like to say - as a new member of WMAC - I haven't been to a AGM to know how the program is organised, or how WAMC involves it self with other WA events, or even if they encourage groups / teams in interstate or international  events, though it will be something I would be interested in finding out this year, especially since I am considering doing the Great Ocean Road event next year as well as the Sydney C2S and would be great to have other WA CR's there.

Re blocking roads and  organising events - I lived in Newcastle, NSW for a few years - doing some local fun runs and the Sydney C2S, which even though is a 60000+ person event, (and you do need to get there early for a 10am start), is what I felt is a well organised, party feel event, also roads are closed to all other pedestrians and cyclist for the couple of hours of the event  - and if you want to complain about jostling - don't do a  bigger event than the Perth C2S, as I have never felt like complaining about having to pass ppl or have ppl pass me - it is all part of the fun and atmosphere of the event I feel.  If you don't like running in crowds - don't enter the event.  ( and I am a middle of the packer that starts in my area)

I do wish though WAMC events would be better promoted - the only place I hear about the Womens Classic, Challenge Fun Run or other WAMC events is by downloading the WAMC programme - and when I tell other friends about it they have never heard about WAMC , and don't realise certain runs are on.  Though the C2S is getting 8 weeks of promotion in the local Sunday paper.   It's the lack of regonition that WA events seem to have in the rest of the country - and maybe that is because of the lack of promotion by WAMC - or maybe not.....???

I do find a lot of WA ppl don't like any sort of change - and maybe that is the downfall of clubs and organisations here - to make events bigger - we need to accept change.

Wasn't going to weigh in to this debate - though due to my ramblings I have - I just want to see WA running on the map a little more!!!  :vava:

Despite the fact that I have not registered yet (will do it 1st week August, all going well!), I thought it would be nice if all the CR's taking part in the Perth C2S Half marathon were to post their week's training, like the ones taking part in the marathon are doing, so that we could support, encourage and motivate each others.

So I will start - after taking a full week off running after the Perth marathon, I started training again last week.  I wanted to ease myself into it so it was a very easy week.

This is how it went:
Mon:  deepwater running
Tue:   5.16k recovery
Wed:  6.51k easy incl 5'@85% MHR
Thu:  gym circuit
Fri:     8.28k easy incl 2x5'@85%R5' + gym circuit + 1/2 DWR intervals
Sat:  Rest
Sun:  11.30k 'long' run
Total for the week:  31.25k

I found my heartrate was still a bit high at rest (better today) and had a tendency to go up quickly, probably a sign that I am still recovering but everything else felt good.....This coming week will be the start of my proper training with a bit of speed work and of course 'hills'!

So Rosie, Bones, Orlando, Guinness and everyone doing the half, it is now your turn to let us know how you are going!

Happy training everyone! :)

Hi Pelagie
I don't particularly have a set training plan. Track sessions are Little A sessions that I take part in. Sadly most of the kids go faster than me!!
This was my week last week.
Mon -Sprint session at track followed by an easy 2km
Tue- 3km walk
Wed - 8km incl 5km tempo
Thurs- sprint session followed by masters comp 800m and 2km race
Fri- Rest
Sat - Easy 15km
Sun- King of the  Mountain 16.6km (lots  of hills and very hard run but pulled up better than expected.

Would love to join in the run with you but Saturday my kids are involved in their sports.

Been trying to get the hill runs in every week.

Hi Lors,

I actually will be doing my run from City Beach on Sunday not Saturday  - I am supposed to run with Kermit on Saturday.  Did my first hills running this morning and it wasn't too bad...so looking forward to see how I go on that part of the course on Sunday.

You might not have a set training plan but you seems to be doing quite well so keep up the good work and PM me if you are still interested in doing Sunday - I am aiming at doing 16km. :)

Good idea Pelagie! Here's my week last week:
Saturday - 17k long run
Sunday 7.2k (overdid a bit)
Wednesday 5k
Friday 3.2k on the treadmill at the gym

I'm a bit concerned at the moment because I'm experiencing quite a bit of foot pain. I went to the gym last night and had to get off the treadmill after 7min as it was too painful to run.:) If anyone knows a good podiatrist in Perth (who looks after runners) please PM me.

@ Lors:  Not a problem and thank you!  Have a great run with the Masters at Darlington! :)

@ Rosie:  Glad you think it is a good idea!   Sorry to hear about you foot pain, you are doing so well with your training, lets hope it is only minor and that you get it sorted out very soon!  Good luck and keep us posted!

Hi runrosierun, i've sent you a pm regarding seeing John Verity at UWA.  He's a physio but he picked up the cause of my foot issue very quickly and you can get in to see him straight away.  I forgot to mention that you don't need to be a student of a UWA person to see him.  Good luck.

Hi Runrosierun

Might be good to get a diagnosis first but I saw Tim Blair(pod) at Cannington who solved my biomechanic issues very quickly. I had a chronic achilles problem and all my friends were telling me to give up running. Few visits to Tim and also some physio sorted me out.Good luck  :)

I saw the podiatrist this morning, and very happy to say that C2S half is still on for me! Thanks very much for everyone's recommendations and PMs.

I went to Peak podiatry in subi, which lots of people recommended. I saw Juliette who was just excellent. She videoed my run (never been to a pod before so was v impressed with the technology) and diagnosed that my foot soreness stems from my running style, which also stems from weak glutes.

Very happy to have an answer and a plan to work towards.

Good news Rosie, weak glutes appear to be very common in runners upping mileage, make sure the physio gives you lots of exercises.

I have an appnt with Peak tomorrow and hope to sort out my shoe issues once and for all.

That is really good news Rosie - does that mean that you can still continue with your training schedule and do specific exercises to strenghten your glutes?  If so, work on your glutes and you will be back on track in no time! :)

Good to hear Rosie,  I must say my PT makes sure I work my glutes (along with my Hamstrings , core muscles) every week - saying it's those muscles I will be calling on during the long run.

Good News
Have you excercises to sort out the glutes? Glad to hear nothing to serious that could stop you running.

Hi there! Just reading about the issues with glutes etc.... i am a yoga instructor and can't stress enough how much i believe yoga helps with running... find the correct class and you get the awesome stretching as well as great strengthening poses for quads, glutes, calves and you'll have core muscles like never before!! also of great benefit is with continued yoga practice you learn to align with your breathing which i find helps me get through those "hit the wall" moments!! more than happy to offer any advice in regards to suitable classes in your area.... believe me not all yoga classes are just lying there saying ommmmmmm!!!!

Thanks guys for all your concern :) I've been given one set of exercises (butt clenching step up if that makes sense) but would be very happy to hear of any other good ones, or useful machines at the gym etc. I haven't tried yoga but have had a few good pilates sessions which is also apparently v good for strengthening the core etc - so hopefully long term I will ward off any more probs.

Back on C2S training, I'm skipping my long run this weekend just to rest the foot a bit more, but am going to try the new running style that the pod recommended. Then short runs during the week - and back to the long run next weekend.

Hi Pelagie

I'm jumping in here as am guessing you wont be frequenting the Womens Classic thread too much now that you are not doing this one.
Thanks so much for the run yesterday! It was lovely to meet you face to face and I cant believe how quickly the run went. The best thing for me was that i came home thinking that yes I actually could probably run further than 12kms..i have doubted myself with increasing distance over 12kms.

The second best thing is that my niggly Periformis muscle is behaving!! I had a good stretch and rolled around on the tennis ball last night ( had to steal it off the dog first!)

I am happy to say that i have pulled up pretty good today. Going to rest today then back in to it on Monday. Am going to do some decent hills tomorrow (Yuk!)

Now to all Perth CR's

I really like the idea of recording what i do each week but i am only doing the 12km not half marathon ..maybe I will be cheeky anyhow and post it in here unless there are any complaints??

I love reading what you all do ..its very very inspiring!!!!

Cheers Kermit :)

P.S Oh and to jump on the Yoga bandwagon...Its fantastic!! I started going once a week to an evening class a few months ago and it is great..the class i do is basically like a full hour of wonderful stretching and my teacher says lots of runners really benefit from it. I feel wonderful afterwards B)

Kermit you are most welcome to come and post your training here!  Really enjoyed our run yesterday too, it went so fast and I know you can run more than 12km no problem!  Beleive in yourself and go for it!

I had a pretty heavy week and started training on hills - I am pleased as it actually went better than I thought it would!

Here is my week:
Mon:  Deepwater running
Tue:  10km hilly run
Wed:   9.25km incl 2*6x30"/30"R3'
Thu:  Gym circuit
Fri:    11.22km incl 2x10'@85-90%HRM + Gym circuit
Sat:   13.10km easy
Sun:  19.14km on end C2S course from City Beach-Selby St-CB-Bold Park-CB - hilly
Total for the week:  62.71km

I have to admit that today I was only intending to run 16km...... but must have been half asleep when I mapped it :)   Legs a bit tired but an easier week next week with my long run on the start of the C2S half with the Kings Park's loop and Kings Park Rd included.

Happy training everyone! B)

Well C2S is going to be my first half marathon.
I am really looking forward to it and (for me) I think I am training quite hard.

Program over the last few weeks:
Sunday 19th 16.2km long run
Tuesday 21st 6.2km Fast pace
Thursday 23rd 6.1km Fast pace
Sunday 26th 21.1km long run
Wednesday 29th 6.1km Fast Pace
Thursday 30th 30 minutes Hills (don't know the distance)

In general feeling good. No major issues other than the usual fatigue.

As far as the course goes, I think it'll be tough, but not too bad. The 6.1 route that I am doing is through Kings Park down Lovekin and back up May. The hill is long but not terrible.

Good luck to everyone else.

Welcome BigKev!  Hope everybody's training is going well and according to plan!  So sorry Rosie that you are injured, lets hope you recover quickly and that you will still be up to doing the half!

I have had an easier week this week and despite coming down with some kind of bug at the begining of the week, still managed  to more or less keep to my schedule.  Here is how it went:

- Mon:  DWR
- Tue:  12.20k, easy run
- Wed: Rest (too sick to do anything)
- Thu:  10k fartlecks + gym circuit
- Fri  :   8.59k incl 5xhill repeats
- Sat:    5k - CR 5k Challenge
- Sun:  14k - on start of half marathon course incl Kings Park loop & Kings Park Ave to Thomas St.
Total for this week:  49.79k

Haven't been finding the hills too hard and will keep doing my long runs on the course, alternating between the start and finish, that should cover the hardest parts of it.

Have a good training week everyone! :)

Righto - I've finally entered (as part of work team as they're going to be reimbursing me...even though I'm leaving!).

Training is all random and sporadic.... I'm more gearing up for the Blackmores Marathon on September 20th but think the C2S HM is going to challenge me... A LOT! Am going to run the course as part of a longer run tomorrow morning so guess I'll finally know what i'm up against in reality!

Well, it is now official, I have finally registered on Friday for the C2S Half Marathon as part of team CoolRunners!

This was another heavy week for me with my last very long run today but so far everything is going according to plan and the hills are getting easier every week!

This is how it went:
- Mon:  DWR
- Tue:  10km hilly course
- Wed: 11.23km incl 3x5'@85/90%MHR
- Thu:  Gym circuit
- Fri:    11km incl 5x30"/30"+6x1'/1'+5x30"/30" + Gym circuit
- Sat:   11.77km easy
- Sun:  21.42km on C2S course
Total for the week:  65.42km.

From now I will ease off a bit on the mileage but still keeping hill work and intensity.

Hope you are all doing well with your preparation!   Happy training! :)

Well I'm out of this now :). Woke up with a buggered back a week ago and no running, swimming or golf has been possible since. I was going to have a whinge about it but given what I've just found out about 2 friends I'd feel ridiculous. One had his kidney removed a year ago due to cancer, that was supposedly encapsulated and completely removed. Had his 12 month checkup a few weeks ago and has found he now has an inoperable cancer wrapped around his aorta. Things are looking grim. Another's wife had breast cancer 2 years ago, and again was given a positive outcome after surgery. Just found out she now has a cancerous lump in her neck and again the outlook is grim. Both in their 40's and with young kids. Life's not fair sometimes.

Hopefully my trivial back complaint will get sorted in time to get back into training for the Freo 1/2 instead.

Good luck to everyone for the C2S 1/2. I look forward to hearing your reports in a few weeks.

That is a shame Gregorywannabe and my heart goes to your friends and their families in these tough times, you are right, life's not fair sometimes!  Look after yourself and hope everything comes good with your back problem in time for the Freo half!

This has been another good week for me but I am SO TIRED.....oh well, only 2 weeks to go!!!!  This is how my week went:
- Mon:  DWR
- Tue:  13.08km easy
- Wed: 10.45km incl 2x3'(85-90%)R2'+2x5'(90%+)R2'
- Thu:  Gym circuit
-  Fri:   10.39km incl 8xhill repeats + Gym circuit + spa
- Sat:   Rest
- Sun:  18km on C2S Half course incl Kings Park loop & Hay St
Total for the week:  51.92km

Next week will be another solid week followed by a much lighter one being the week of the race.

Not long to go now, happy training! :D

Pelaige - looking at that schedule you should be doing the Marathon - not just the half   - I only did 58.8 and was over the programmed amount - no wonder your tired - well done though.

Thanks TR but beleive me I am more than happy with doing the half!  I must say that since training for the marathon I find hard to cut down on the kms :D   But I certainly will take a well deserved break after Freo half (well...for a week anyway)!!!!

Keep up the good work!

Hi All,

I have only moved to Perth in the last 5 months from Brisbane and have been alittle slack with getting on to CR but I am doing the half at the C2S and wanted to introduce myself.  I work fulltime have 2 kids and try to fit running in to keep me sane so definately need goals to keep me motivated.  This is only my 2nd half I did the Gold Coast last year and I am not sure what time to aim for as I know its a hilly course but I am looking forward to it.

Good to read all about your training, hope all goes well for the next week and a half.

Michelle

Welcome Michelle Hope you are settling in. I know what you mean about juggling work kids and running. I do a lot of my training when my boys are doing their sport.
Looking forward to the run too. Looking at your goals we have similar times.
Good Luck with the run

Hello all C2S Half marathoners!  We are getting close to the end, this time next week we will all be relaxing!

This has been another good week for me but finding hard to keep motivated.  This is how it went:
- Mon:  DWR
- Tue:  10km very hilly
- Wed: 11.12km incl 2*5x1'/1'R4'
- Thu:  Gym Circuit
- Fri:    11.30km incl 5'(85%+)R2'+5'(90%+)R2'+5'(85%+) (done with a hangover.......)
- Sat:   Rest
- Sun:  18km incl last section of C2S (Bold Park-City Beach)
Total for the week:  50.42km

Was hard going running along the coast this morning with such strong wind but happy with the run and feel quite ready for those hills now!

Lighter week coming up with only 3 training runs, less ks but still a bit of speed work!

Hope you are all feeling ready!  Good tapering and good carbo loading! :D

Well we're almost there... when I woke up this morning at around 6am I thought "Blerg! This time Sunday I'll be expected to be assembled at Esplanade Park!" which reminds me I guess i'd best find an op shop and at least get a jumper to throw away!

Is anyone else checking in a bag... given that I can see myself there for a few hours I really think i'll need to... maybe even a towel for a quick cold shower @ City beach?

Now... if any of you see me out on the course (though I assume you'll all be well ahead of me) and I'm walking then please note that this will be deliberate! I am looking at changing my distance running method to one of run & walk & the C2S HM will be my first event application for this method (I'm going to have to suck up my ego and just get on with it as my first walk will no doubt be not too far into KP!).

I would be more excited if my mind wasn't on the whole packing and moving thang!

Hey Stella,

I haven't figured that part out yet. The weather forecast on the newsletter that I just received from Activ and the true weather forecast are a little different! Looks like it will be a cool morning (4 degrees), but probably not too windy (8km/h) and only (at this stage) a 30% chance of less than 1mm of rain.

I am still trying to figure out how to get the family anywhere near the finish! The closest parking area is a long way away for a 3 year old!  :D

Apart from that, I am as prepared as I am ever going to be for my first HM, and am realyl looking forward to it.

For a complete idiot like myself, on the walk / run thing, how do you determine when you will change? Are you planning on timing it, distance or exertion?

Good luck everyone.

Rob

Well the weather sounds good to me... the cooler and more devoid of wind the better...I dont even mind a bit of rain!

The walk run thing is something relatively new to me so I have only used it twice but intend to use it for the Blackmores marathon so need to get practise in.

I am working on a run 10 mins walk 1 min interval (it's something I was pointed towards on the triathlon website I log my runs at at it is normally used in an Ironman application for the marathon). I do have a function in my garmin that tells me when to run and even tells me when i'm going to fast or slow for my nominated pace for the interval but quite frankly I hate it beeping at me so I'm just going to auto lap manually by keeping an eye on the time! It's going to be difficult to start with simply bce 10 mins into a run you don't need to walk and ppl look at you funny but so far at worst I wont be any worse off than running the whole way and at best the energy I conserve from planned walk breaks will hold me n good stead to finish strongly!

I can see the benefits.
Even with walk breaks, you will probably finish ahead of me.

HaHa ...I just went to Good Sammy's on the way home from work and rummaged thru to find the warmest polar fleece jumper i could find. Now for you bargain hunters out there ...Its half price day for purple tickets at Good Sammys today..yet typically the half price items were so hideous i refused to buy them even tho item will be worn for only an hour or so and then dumped. Ended up spending the grand total of $7.99 for a snuggly mens polar fleece jumper that i will probably wash 6 times before i wear !!!

Weather.com reckons minimum of 1 degree ! Surely this is a typo?? Should be a bit warmer by the time i start the 12km at 9am!!

Anyway, I just want to thank Activ for their wonderful work in the community. Indeed I think it is fantastic that they gave the responsibility, to those who they are chartered to help, to actually organise the event.

All aspects of the planning of the half marathon should be applauded.

6.30 start wow! five minutes before sunrise, coldest time of the day, 5 degrees, great for that start straight up a hill, well done! 45minutes before the first public transport gets in to Perth, stellar! Oh but there is more. Insist that runners arrive half an hour before they start, so they can mill about in a wind exposed area, in the cold.

But the best bit. Encourage people to register early, but don't release the start times, until it is too late for people to change events.

To the organisers:

You guys rock!

To all the half marathoners

Just want to jump in now and wish you all the very very best for Sunday. Your an inspiring bunch and I have really enjoyed following your training and ups and downs of preparation for this. I maaaaay go there next year (the "HALF"...its such a scary word to me!) . Am set to do my second 12km C2S and hopefully beat last years time.

Anyhow rest up, enjoy the carbs and know that you have put in the km's and even if you haven't one of my fave sayings is "absolutely ANYTHING can happen on race day" . You are capable of amazing things!!!

Hope you all achieve your goals.

Cheers Kermit :D

Yeah, point taken guys. Bloody whinger is what I am.

I've trained pretty hard for this event, but due to work commitments have had no chance to do any running at that time of the morning.

I'm not the greatest runner going round, and really needed all the planets aligned, just to finish midfield.

Hi Wharfie
I hear your points it seems the half marathon is a bit of the poor relation this year, but it will all be fine on the day I'm sure. My plan is just to go out slowly for the first km or so. Can't be any worse than the masters run last Sundayat Mullaloo where the wind was cold and strong. Good luck to all participants.
