Hi all, I have just started running in the last 3 months. i joined a triathlon team as runner for school in late April and it has gone from there. I then ran cross country for school and have progressed to NSW All Schools level. i am currently training twice a week (just running 8km) and beating my time by roughly 10secs each run. I am currently running about a 13.30 4km and a 27.30 8km. i was just wondering how competitive these times are? and what sort of running potential i may possibly have if i train more often?

Cheers

Them Times Would Be Very Competitive I Do Loads More Trainning And Could Only Do A High 28 8k

But Your Times Don't Really Add Up If You Can Do 27:30 For 8k You Should Be Doing About 13 Flat For 4k

Hi Eagle,
Your times are very good, especially if your only been training a few months. What other sports have you done over the last few years? Check out the various state school sport sites for appropriate times for your age. CBs P.S. Remember race times for XC are less important, because of the terrain and also accuracy of the distance.

yeah i agree with cbs, yur times are great depending on how old you are ? but if you are 14 or 15 you will do great. it took me 2 years to get those sort of times. At 15 12:30 is a very good national level 4klm time. My advice to you is to do a time trial over 3klm on tartan and you will get a better idea. Seems like you are a natural born runner tho :D

Eagle they are great times for someone who has run so little.

I suggest you find a local athletics coach, who can do a complete review to see how you are traveling.

Coaches can be found on Australian Track and Field Coaches website or check with your local athletics club(List is on Athletics NSW website.

If you have any further questions please feel free to contact me.

Thanks for the reply,
I play and ref lots of touch footy. Playing at least 3 games and reffing 3 a week.
yeh that comment in regards to the validity of x country times is a good point.
i should probably also specify that those are training times not competition and are along my training route which is alternating grass and footpath.

Eagle, I think you have a real talent if you've got times like these to show for what is a fairly small amount of training. I think your potential would have to be huge. Did you run in the NSW All Schools Triathlon? In the team event? (Are you from NSW?)

Oh yeah- and I'm running at All Schools XC as well. Have you run at Eastern Creek yet? What zone thing (e.g. CIS) are you from?

yeh, i entered that with some mates from school and decided to do a bit of running two weeks before it as not to be embarrassed by the other runners. from memory i ran a high 14 for that.
what about you?
im from CCC. in the qualifying competition at Eastern creek i ran a much worse time than 27.30 though which is the best ive done training. something more along the lines of a high mid to high 28 i think.
how'd u go at youre qualyifier thing?

Thanks for asking. I competed in the Individuals comp, on the Wednesday, and came 9th in Intermediate Girls, which meant I missed out on Nationals by one place. My swim was kind of slow... Very slow. Oh well. How did your team go? I've always wanted to go in Teams, but I'd always have to ride the bike leg, when I'd prefer to run. So did you get into running after training for that triathlon, just recently?
I came 3rd at my qualifier, I'm in CIS, or Combined Independent Schools. Are you in the private school system? I haven't heard of CCC. Our qualifier was at Eastern Creek as well, on the 28th May.
Obviously I don't know where you live, but there's a XC/athletics group that trains at Cherrybrook (near Hornsby) every Monday and Wednesday night, $10 per session, with a level 4 middle distance coach. That's the one I'm in, but I'm sure you'd have one nearby even if you live miles away, they'd have websites. Good luck with finding a coach. Keep us updated on your progress!
