The Stawell gift could go to ballarat! What the ! This is just another case of the big eating the small. The Stawell gift should stay in Stawell and if it needs help well than help them . If it goes it will be gone forever !

It's a bit sad that tradition seems to get pushed to the side at times.
It would be like running the Melbourne Cup in Sydney.
However at the end of the day things are ruled by the almighty dollar. It is a better option to move it than have it sink.
Hopefully thought this was just put out there through the media to spark some businesses into gear to jump on board with a few bucks.

This is where society is screwed up sometimes.

The Stawell Gift needs to move because it loses money. It loses money because it "has to" get bigger and bigger every year, with more prizemoney, more events, and more quality athletes. It has to get bigger every year because....

because....

because that's just the way it is with things. We don't question 'why?' the need for continual upsizing, we just accept it. So the only way for the Stawell Gift to survive is to move it away from Stawell. Huh? WTF kind of logic is that?

The organisers and the people of Stawell are crazy if they adopt this option. Far better to scale the thing back, and keep the tradition alive. It won't sink if it's run at a sustainable level, but if they move it for a few quick bucks I can pretty much guarantee it'll not only lose its mojo, but the town of Stawell will never get it back again.

And more importantly, a grand tradition in Australian sporting history will be broken, and lost forever. Economic rationalists can be real dickheads sometimes, because they usually fail to include in their cost/benefit analysis most of the things that actually make life worth living: values, traditions, ideals, justice. You know, little things like that.

Grrrrr :vava:

Like moving the Bells Beach Surfing Classic to Portsea. Unheard of!

Stawell since 1878 and should remain there.

Ballarat has its own gift. And the 39 people who swell the local sports ground each year......

No drill hall at Ballarat either.

Won't happen

I agree the Ballarat Gift is not well attended, most gifts aren't. This year it was held at Eastern Oval and was a really good day out. Top racing, many coming over from South Aust.
I sat under the oak tree planted by WG Grace near the old grandstand and saw our local boy Rod Matthews win the mens gift.

I think the Stawell gift would loose its meaning of moved to Ballarat.

Very hard to compete with the coin that Ballarat are offering - $250k per annum compared to $15k !

Would be a big backflip by Brumby to move away from "guarantee."

Hope it remains in Stawell.

Ballarat nee Stawell Gift just sounds silly.

these gifts are great way of suporting and celebrating the mediocrity.

real sprinters are invited to Weltclasse, Golden leage and similar or simply do run AA qualifiers for worlds.

for teh rest, the gifts are all there is left.

the Gift offers additional gift - it lets to start the more mediocre somewhere in the middle of the distance

the culture of the Gifts is well over

It is not athletics, stop kidding Yourself.

by the way, Sydney can take Melbourne cup, I would pack with it F1 as well.

To me it seems more of a meat up by SAC to get some more money.

Yes I believe it is a great weekend of racing, and is a way for some athletes to make some cash.

If the winner of the gift only won $20k instead of $40k would it diminish the event, I dont think so. If the Wimbledon offered less money for first place, would the regulars still turn up(Players and fans)? I think they might.

National championships in Australia offer no prize money, but there still appears to a fair few who turn up(although, having being to Brisbane this year for nationals, maybe not that many).
