Did you get a total elevation gain/loss for the 100k? My 310 seems to be way out. I had 4800m gain 4700m loss in that 80k, according to ST. Hi Runbare, I got just shy of 3000mtrs total vertical gain and the same loss. -------------------- |

Hi Runbare, I got just shy of 3000mtrs total vertical gain and the same loss. I got over 3000 and I only did 60km (Johanna to Marengo sweeping) but I did go back and forth a lot trying to find reception to call for assistance. I can't believe it added that much gain though. -------------------- "It's better to die on your feet than to live on your knees." Dolores Ibarruri

Thank you to all the runners, crew, volunteers and spectators (in person and online!) who joined in the inaugural GOW100 trail runs. The results are now on the website (http://www.gow100.com/results). If there are any errors please let me know. We'll be addind a more detailed, downloadable version in the next few days.
Sorry for the delay in posting these - and milov and brett could attest, I have had a pretty rough bout of gastro since Monday. Obviously many of you have posted race reports on cool running and your blogs. Could you forward direct links on to me, so that I can link to them from the site? We will also have many more photos of the weekend (and a new video) going up on the site over the coming few days. -------------------- More wilderness fun than you can poke a stick at...

My elevation gain/loss was about 3000m. I got just shy of 3000mtrs total vertical gain and the same loss. Thanks guys, 3000m sounds good. I got over 3000 and I only did 60km (Johanna to Marengo sweeping) but I did go back and forth a lot trying to find reception to call for assistance. I can't believe it added that much gain though. I have similarly exaggerated gains/losses. I wish I could figure out how to get the 310 to get this right. Not that it really matters, just being pedantic -------------------- |

I have similarly exaggerated gains/losses. I wish I could figure out how to get the 310 to get this right. Unfortunately the garmins won't get the altitude bit completely right especially on undulating and treed trail. we just had this discussion on another trail thread and in the past as well. The total ascent and descents especially will be out if you don't use the sportstracks plugin to correct. I'm no expert but when you start losing satellite coverage altitude is the first to suffer, the triangulation will probably still be accurate for pinpointing location, but the extra work to determine altitude needs as many sats as it can get to get an accurate reading. The Suunto's that use barometric pressure are the way to go if you need to accurately measure total ascent and descent. Yeah, you definitely can’t trust a GPS for elevation readings. I wore mine on a stationary bike once for the HR readings. I had a 75m elevation gain during that session!

Drop Bags looking for a home.
I have a few bags of bits and pieces, some food stuff, that will probably hit the bin, before it grows legs and walks away. There are some clothes items that are trying to escape the bags they are in, that desperately need a new home or the rubbish bin. Some runners, Garmin, Ipod and bits, I'm sure someone owns and needs them, let me kow if you are missing anything you want returned. -------------------- Australian Ultra Runners Association - Secretary / Membership Secretary

I used a suunto for the 100k, giving 3125m ascent and 3040m descent. I have always found it to be very accurate for elevation gain/loss.

The GNW 100km is around 3,800m I believe. Guess it depends on what you like - for me, it didnt feel like GOW had as much climbing as people have stated. Not that I question it at all, but I think a lot of the time with GOW you climb on the smaller undulations without realising it, as you're constantly doing smaller up and downs. I certainly found I ran more of the hills than I would on GNW, which is a good thing. Still ranks as the most scenic course though -------------------- Hmmm the trail season tis approaching....

So 195km. Not counting diversions on the return trip.
I haven't run the entire length in continuity and not the out and back. It would still surprise me if it was harder than GNW100. But the fact that we are even considering it in the same league of difficulty is impressive. One thing is certain: for those backing up in a few short weeks, GNW is going to feel a whole lot harder this year. Which reminds me: the Slam is down to just 4 runners. -------------------- "It's better to die on your feet than to live on your knees." Dolores Ibarruri

I can comment on the first 100km of both GOW and GNW. I still believe GNW is marginally tougher, even with the relatively 'easy' road section into Yarramalong.
Longer climbs and it can be hotter. Similar logistics re-pack but distances between checkpoints can be covered more quickly at GOW. Out n' back GOW v GNW100 miler comparison will have to wait till next year. -------------------- |

Oh contraire Whippet... it's the perfect training run leading into GNW... of course I'm speaking from the 100km sprint option, not the lunancy of doing the out and back. Regardless of difficulty, each race has its own 'thing' that makes it what it is... GNW for example doesn't have the 10kms or so of sand running that we had to endure, man that was a hard slog... GNW also doesnt have tiger snakes (from what I can gather), something run2climb kindly told me about as we made our way through some very snake-like territory. And of course, there's Glasshouse, the only road race in the whole of the slam... now where's UCB when you need him -------------------- Hmmm the trail season tis approaching....

The only bits I remember are the sand. I'm pretty sure the whole thing was on soft sand. Funny but that reminds me of the last section I was sweeping alone late on sunday. There were these massive holes right through the middle of the muddy sections. Apparently Seris wasn't taking any chances and was ploughing through everything on a mission to beat the cut-off. She was driving post-holes. Message: don't get in her way. On one of our recce runs, we got to Elliot River Hike In Campground and Brett asked if this was something that we would add signage to. Now at the entrance to the campground there is a 'you are here' map of the campground and the surrounding track. Whippet pointed to it and said, "anyone who needs signage here shouldn't be on the track!" When seris phoned me, from the entrance to the campground, asking should she go "down the hill, up the hill (where she had come from), or in to the campground?", I didn't have the heart to give her Whippet's opinion -------------------- More wilderness fun than you can poke a stick at...

Dan, I would have thought you would be in your element on that soft sand...MdS 'n all. I did feel very at home actually and slightly nostalgic running on the sand. It was about that time I caught up with Skin and Bone too, and we reminissed about our time on Morocco. However, I'm still not good at running on the damn thing. Despite all the sand, I hardly got any in my shoes whilst running through it... kind of makes me wonder why I took gaiters to the MDS... there's only about 30kms of sand in that race anyway. i'm here You are as cunning as a cunning fox who's just been appointed the head of cunning-ness in cunning-shire. I did feel very at home actually and slightly nostalgic running on the sand. It was about that time I caught up with Skin and Bone too, and we reminissed about our time on Morocco. However, I'm still not good at running on the damn thing. This comment is often made to Dan and I. someting along the lines that we have run in the Sahara Desert so we must be good at sand running I think that I speak for Dan as well as me NO!!!!!!!! Seen way, way too much of the stuff, hate it, crap at running on it, been there, done that, no more please, (begging) please. -------------------- Cheers,

You'd have to have been dragging an anchor to get in my way On one of our recce runs, we got to Elliot River Hike In Campground and Brett asked if this was something that we would add signage to. Now at the entrance to the campground there is a 'you are here' map of the campground and the surrounding track. Whippet pointed to it and said, "anyone who needs signage here shouldn't be on the track!" When seris phoned me, from the entrance to the campground, asking should she go "down the hill, up the hill (where she had come from), or in to the campground?", I didn't have the heart to give her Whippet's opinion All I wanted was a sweepers hand to hold.......... and a sign to Shelley Beach. I can't tell you what being awake for 40 hours does to your head. I would hate to see a map of the out and backs I did in that last section....... I still go to sleep thinking of my new best friend Brett |

All I wanted was a sweepers hand to hold.......... Trust me, the sweeper was doing everything within his power to get there to hold your hand. And I was so looking forward to seeing you cross that line. -------------------- "It's better to die on your feet than to live on your knees." Dolores Ibarruri

For me,metre for metre the GNW is tougher but the extra 30 ks adds a new dimension for us lowly people who hang at the back so comparisons are really moot.

However, very rarely does anyone maximize number one, so if you can maximize number two (and you are training effectively) you’ll end up being able to beat a bunch of people that maybe on paper should be beating you. |
