Without too much knowledge of the protocol for fatass runs. On behalf of the BMMC we would like to invite anyone interested to join us in a moon lit running of the Woodford to Glenbrook trail. Planned for the first full moon of Spring, Friday 4th September 2009.

Without too much exploration a quick squiz at the Sleep Train endorsed City Rail timetable suggests there is a train that arrives at Woodford Station at 9.44pm which should see the opportunity for a number of joggers to exit the cause way at around midnight.

If individuals would like to take more or less time to meet at the causeway at this magical hour (ie that point in which it is yesterday, today and tomorrow all at once) then please feel free to start at an earlier or of course later time.

Will discuss with more experienced BMMC runners the obligations of hosting such events and do the best to make everyones nocturnal journey an enjoyable one.  :D

The starters so far:

Scam Bullant
Mister G (work permitting)
Sleep Train
Flying Fist aka Dr Phil

Sounds good.  The downhills at the start will be interesting in the dark.  Depending how I go next weekend, I might throw a detour into Euroka in the mix.  Just hoping the beloved Tigers arent on Friday footy.

What time does the train depart Glenbrook???  I would be guessing 9.15pm or so???

A tinkle (so now I have tinkled and squized, isnt this fun) around the City Rail web site indicates the train that arrives Woodford 9.44pm leaves Glenbrook at 9.13pm (and Central 8.10pm). For those looking for the earlier start the train prior leaves Central 7.07pm, Glenbrook 8.10pm and arrives at woodford 8.41pm.

Got a taste of night running at end of 12 foot. Would have loved this. Shame. Dubbo too far away for another trip so soon.

ooh I didnt realise so many bodily functions were going to be involved :D .

so it looks like 8.45pm for the early start, depending on Cityrail.  Hopefully that should give us enough time to make it out before midnight.

Do they lock the gates to the NP at Glenbrook overnight or can we leave a car at Euroka?

The gates are locked Emjay - but you don't have to run into Euroka and out again, you can run straight down the Oaks to the Causeway and it is only around 25km.  We might have to get the faster ones to leave us breadcrumbs so we don't get lost though.....

How good will it be to run this and not have to listen out for fast approaching MTBers coming up behind.

Oh, and Welcome back, Fred.

I'm in... rather excited!

Bit concerned that I won't make it by midnight if I dont start til 9pm tho!
I know 3 hours for like 25km sounds ridiculously long for most of you but A. I've done exactly 2 trail runs in my whole life B. I didn't do either of those in the dark, C. I want to take it easy as I'd prefer not to break something 16 days out from the Blackmores marathon & D. actually, it's sadly not that far fetched for me if there's lotsa hills to contend with!

I'll start with whoever starts first... i can hardly run on my own - I have no sense of direction at the best of times let alone in the bush let alone in a city I've "lived" in for all of 5 days!

Yay!

Had Stella show me this last night and I immediately said hell yes so count me in.

I'd also like to get in the early group of 9pm if possible. Haven't had much blue mountains experience to take my running/navigating skills in that environment to pull me through!

W2G is pretty simple Im lead to believe it is even safe for touring English backpackers, even at night. Not too many turns really once on to start of fire trail at Woodford. Just keep heading straight ignoring any tracks and trails to the side.

A bigger problem will be encountered if any of us stumble apon the Panther  :D

Stella I bought our headlights today.

Plan is to hide a few coldies at the Causeway, so that no matter what time we get there, we are "entertained"....

But Flying Fists idea of food as well is great.  How much fun would a camp fire be.  Hmmm, how legal would a camp fire be?  Answers to these questions and more on the back of a postcard to "www.coolrunning.com.au"

This looks great and most times I would say YES straight away.  But with trailwalker the week before, I think I may well be in no fit state to run this.

So I won't commit until I know how I pull up from Trailwalker..............

If I don't make it, have a wonderful time - sounds like it will be a fun night.

Always wanted to quote this guy. Anyone with ST as a groupie must know what they are talking about!!! Anyway, just checking of those people who have expressed interest so far, is their anyone who thinks they need a map on this one as they are running either by themselves or with others that don't know the way. Did discuss with Mister G last night and general belief was that you get on the Oaks Fire Trail and get off at the end of it. However may be thinking from born and bred in Mts perspective.

In terms of lights, I do plan to have one packed. But if all goes to plan and the clouds do there bit by staying away there should be plenty of light for running without them. Have done this before (and in our uniminded altered state) found no need for lights. In fact dont think we actually considered the fact we might not be able to see running at night at all. Hope once again the lights will stay packed away this time round.

If things go to schedule this weekend for me, I am planning on having a dip at Wentworth Falls to Glenbrook.  It is just shy of 50km and I will be doing a very comfortable pace.

For anyone that doesnt know it, there is a bit of road running at the start to meet up with Ingar trail, then it is largely downhill like the end of Oaks.  Decent climb out of the creek, then a few streets to get to Woodford Rail Station.

There is a 6.41pm train that leaves Glenbrook and arrives at Wentworth Falls at 7.29pm.  That gives me 2:15 to do about 20km or so, then meet up with everyone at Woodford station and continue on.

Will confirm next week, but it is out there for anyone that wants a longer run.

I like the sound also of an extended run ( wentworth falls - Glenbrook). Will Also think about it.

I have a couple of spare beds/couches at my house if anybody wants a place to stay after the run. I live at Lawson, 10 min up the mountains from woodford.

Also a hot shower.

I am in for Wentworth Falls - Glenbrook.  Travel plans as above.  Getting back to Woodford by 9:44 shouldnt be an issue, but it could get messy on the climb from the causeway back to Glenbrook rail station.

hhmmm 3hrs has been playing on my mind too.  I was 2h45 in daylight, I definitely need to add on a bit more than 15mins to allow for my complete lack of night-running experience ;) .

There's another train that arrives Woodford at 8.12. Since trains often run late, that would give about 3h30 to reach Glenbrook. I think I might be starting off that one.  Ok, I know I'm a wuss but I can't help it,  I'd rather get back early safe and sound.  Anyone want to join me?  Otherwise, I'll just hope the dropbears don't get me.

Looking like a good size group, with a number of other Blue Mt Residents (none CR) indicating they will in all likelyhood join us.

At this point no one has indicated they need a map for this run (it is basically, follow the fire trail and head down) however if you feel a need for one please let me know so I can try and get something organised.

Milov,

It wont be that cold..... more like exhilarating.  The train I will be taking leaves Central at 5:39 and arrives Glenbrook 6:41, then Wenty Falls at 7:29.  I am pretty sure you would get a lift back to the city from one of the other runners.

The run I am doing is the run we did a few years ago on a warm day with Actionman and a few others.  I remember you powering off down the Oaks trail while we had the staggers.  It was early days of your international career.    ;)

From memory Keiron also did the first part with his young fellow on the bike.  He well and truly got me on the way out of Bedford Creek when he was pushing his young fellow up the hill on the bike while he was running.  Keiron might be up for a night run with his youngest fellow in the pram???  I am sure his young fellow will be up for it.  Would be a great to see his young fellow holding the dolphin torch in the pram as he runs down Ingar trail.

hhmmm 3hrs has been playing on my mind too.

Hi Emjay

Happy to start at whatever time you think is most sensible.  Stella will be staying at my place too, so I am sure she won't mind.  I'll send you a PM with the finer details!!

Anyone want to carpool from central/Inner West for the 9.44 start?

I am planning on driving to Glenbrook station and getting the train to Woodford, then running back to the car. Happy to pick up and give a lift back to Inner West/Central station area (preferably not further as I'll be very sleepy at 1am).

Edit: Is the plan to run back up to Glenbrook station together after the causeway? I don't really know the area.

I'd love to give it a go
Have no idea of the terrain so can't judge if 2:15 target is appropriate for me
Last time I ran with someone "doing it comfortable" they were out of sight within the first km

I will be doing 5:15-5:30/km on the runnable bits.  There is a long downhill section and that pace will be quite comfortable.   There is a 2km climb out of Bedford creek that is similar to Pluvi, but not as long.  That pace will have us back to Woodford in time to meet up with others.

I am going to probably park the car along the road just up from the gates - depending on whether there is space at that time in the evening - which is very likely. This option would be more sensible as you can do the walk/run back to the train when you are fresh, as opposed to after the run. However, as my car should be at the gate, lifts back to the station should be possible.

Then I shall either catch the relevant train to Woodford or hitch a lift with some yokels.

Rod, think I will pass up on the extended run, as it will wipe out any training plans for the weekend. Looking forward to the day I can back up some decent runs with some decent rides/swims.

Are we looking to share some beers/electrolyte refreshments at the causeway or shall we retire to the car park at the top? I can stash a stocked up esky down at the causeway if that is where people prefer.
I suggest we hike it up the hill while still warm.
