If anyone is looking for some early season racing, don't forget about this long standing event.

In its 27th year, Prachar and the SriChinmoy group know how to stage well organised, value for money races. At just $110 for the long course Peace Tri, you can afford race yourself silly with 2 or 3 races.

Who's in?

Looks fun Paul, thanks for posting about the event. Is the water very cold? The pics have people in wetsuits so I was just wondering.

Carmen, pretty much any photo you see of a triathlon swim will show most people wearing a wettie. Let's face it, for your average triathlete it is all about the equipment and if someone has spent $600 on a new wettiie, they're going to wear it even when they bath their baby or wash their dog.

It will probably be a tad nippy in Burley Griffen in October, but given the lake is fairly shallow and a dark, murky colour due to being 17% duck pooh, it does heat up earlier in summer than the ocean.

Niiiice ... a swim in cold, diluted duck shit. Makes living near the Pacific Ocean suddenly seem like so much more of a blessing.

cool thanks Paul. For some reason I thought tris excluded the use of wet suits unless the water temperature dropped below a certain amount. But I'm probably wrong.

I find the prospect of warm duck poo strangely enticing. I best not wear my new pink togs though, they may come out the other end of the swim a rather odd shade of taupe. oh not that I'm doing this tri any suit soon. But if I was. Just saying. Thanks for the info!

More like an odd shade of teal...

I think I'm doing Lake Burley Griffin a disservice though, it really does provide a pretty good tri venue. It is sublime swimming on a clear morning with the sun lighting up Black Mountain and the hot air balloons floating overhead. Over the years I've totalled well over 30 hours of tri swimming in LBG, so I am obviously partial to racing in the ACT.

Carmen you are correct about water temperature and wetsuits though, but in reality it is more about prohibiting wetties if the water temp rises too high, rather than only allowing wetties only if the water temp drops. The magic number is a soupy 24C or something like that, over which there are concerns about swimmers overheating. I've only seen the rule enacted in NSW/ACT once in well over 200 races. Hawaii Ironman prohibits wetuits, but it is always at least 26C and is like swimming in tropical fish aquarium.

Is anyone doing any of the Sri Chinmoy triathlon events in Canberra this weekend?

I did the long swim leg as part of a team with Ingrid and others in the Triple tri last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. Certainly not your average triathlon (I've spent too much time over on the dark side at Ironman / IMG events) - but it was fantastically run and had a great friendly atmosphere.

Hmm what I didn't realise though, was why I was so 'discoloured' coming out of the swim. Duck poo!! Oh well, at least it's of organic origin I guess. He he and yes, Carmen, I do remember some very warm spots!!
Needless to say I'll be donning the wettie again for the Half Ironman next month.

Good luck to everyone competing / participating in the various events on offer.
