Enjoy the race. Weather conditions at that time of year in Hobart are generally perfect for distance running.

sorry the correct word is confectionary
talk to any chocolate maker, according the international rules and norms for the chocolate products, the Cadburry crap only qualifies as confectionary and thats how it is sold in europe -
NOT AS CHOCOLATE

It's not - 10 mile hill is rise of about 100m (of a moderate to easy gradient) that is about 10 miles from the centre of Hobart. From memory you'll need to run up it twice.

The course is good - if a little bleak - for such a beautiful city the Marathon isn't that spectacular - but then again it would be hard to find 42.2km of flattish roads anywhere Tassie.
It starts and finishes at the Cadbury Factory (they make chocolate there - I know - strange). I think it is 2 loops of a 20km course (with al little extra at the start). The last 500m is shocking - up the steepest hill in the area.
It isn't fast, but it is interesting. Crowds are very small, as are the number of competitors, but the start finish area is great.

If you map the last km you can see it, just at the corner of Cadbury & Pascall (gotta love thesenames).

I ended up flying down with JetStar and back with Virgin Blue.
Airfares seem to bounce around like petrol prices, so just keep shopping till you get one you are happy with.

For 2010, the Cadbury Marathon will have quite a few new cool initiatives, to cement it as Australia's best value for money marathon.
* It will host the inaugural Australian Masters Half Marathon championships
* There will be the Skins recovery centre at the finish, including fully qualified massage thereapists operating for free to participants
* Awesome spot prizes, including new shoes from Karhu (the latest brand to hit Australia, fresh from Finland) and Skins.
* Increase in prizemoney and giveaways - now more than $10,000 to giveaway.
All competitors also get a free BBQ, plus race bag including chocolate (of course), drink bottle and a few other goodies that we are still working on.
If you want to book a package, we've done a deal with Flight Centre and the Mercure to offer packages which include a discounted race entry. simply email - Troy.DeHaas@flightcentre.com.au (the guy from the R4YL Destination Guide).
And as a few here have mentioned, don't worry about the '10 mile hill', it is purely in reference to the distance of it from the city centre. The total elevation is 250m for the marathon (two laps), off Jeremy Horne's Garmin when he won in 2008.
If you want to know any more information at all, please email me on richard@tasathletics.org.au.
Hope to see lots of you at the 2010 Cadbury Marathon Festival.
Cheers

Just looked at the webiste - there is a poll about paying a small fee for a shuttle to and from the Mercure - I guess that's a possiblity, seems like a good idea

The BBQ afterwards is good, and it's especially good if you happen to know both the winner and the 2nd female, and both are travelling light and don't have any way to carry the vast amounts of chocolate that they win... (I had to help - I'm that type of bloke)
However, I will warn you that if you're looking for an age group placing, forget it. For some unknown reason, they won't/don't publish the age groups in the results (ie they don't turn on one extra column in their spreadsheet). Last year I emailed the organisers a couple of times after the race to find out my place, but never even got a reply.

...so are you coming back Brucey? ...sub 3:10 perhaps? I'm back for another tilt. I'd go bananas going the whole school holidays without a marathon! :-)

I am very fond of this race; it was my first half-marathon several years ago. It's well organised, and I'm looking forward to returning.
we'll be staying at the in-laws.

Fukuoka is in early Dec, so that still leaves the whole school holidays open.
Bruce, the more the merrier for choccy fest, and as Brewer says, there's plenty of time to recover from the Black Stump. I reckon you should do it!

22 downloadsAlso, I certainly am not looking for an age group placing! But see your point sfg, if i did ever get one, i would love to shout about it and show my mate in print ( or on a website ) . That is a bit odd they didn't publish those results.
I am getting excited about doing this - actually pleasantly surprised that so many of the Sydney CR contingent will be there also - so will talk to Santa's little helper who may be getting this junket for me for XMAS. I would look to stay in Hobart itself, and beside the race, the only other thing i want to do is tour the Cascade brewery

Hey Rach,
Is that 4hr barrier in danger at Hobart?

I'm planning my comeback and like many, aim to run a mara in each state, but I wont be ready for Hobart in 2010.....bugger.
I have Canberra to my name so that leaves 7 more and ideally I'd like to do them all in 1 calender year.
What's the next best Tassie road Marathon? Is there anything in either May, June or November (the other months are FULL)?
Thanks.

Isn't 12 weeks enough to be ready?

lol. Yes 12 weeks should be heaps but I'm being very lazy. Was in England last week and ran a 16mile race thinking it was actually a half marathon. Really should have done my sums better but shows me that I still have the base I need!!!

Normally 12 weeks would be enough, but I seriously have not strapped on the boots since May....not one run (poor form yes)
With 7 marathons in 7 months planned (but not comitting to yet), I need to make sure I dont send myself over the edge too early.
Feel free to join me in Hobart in 2011 as Ross Marathon is too close to Sydney and too soon after C2S Perth.

Well, I thought getting a bus from the city might be popular and following the results from our poll and the discussion here, I will go and book one.
Stay tuned to find out how you can book a seat.
Thanks for your support!

I will be arriving on the 2nd January and will be doing some sightseeing with the family before the marathon. My first time to Tassie so it should be an intersting 10 days.
