Couldn't find a list anywhere of CR's who have entered Track & Field / Road events at the World Masters Games so I thought I'd start a new topic to this effect.

I'll start the ball rolling. I've entered:

1500m / 3000m Steeple / 5000m / 8km Cross Country / 10km Road Race / Half Marathon (M 40-45, currently 44.75, damn!)

It's going to be a big week, hope the old body holds up.

Happy to track the tread and come up with a bit of a start list for Athletic events shortly before they commence.

I'm in for the 10km, cross country, half marathon, 5000m, and (just for the hellovit and the big stadium experience and to get every last gasp out of my $220 investment) the long jump... how hard can it be?!?!!? Women 35-39.

I'm in for the 10km, 8km cross country, 5000m track and 1/2 marathon, female 45-49. Never done a track race before so should be interesting going round and round. Really excited did a reconoitre (sp?) of the half last week there is a slight incline plus speed humps after the armoury (you do that bit twice)

in for 8km cross country and maybe half (but probably be busy coaching when that race is on). I don't back up well from races as I tend to really lay it on the line and usually need at least a week to recover from a hard race these days. Thus I look like a wimp compared to you animal posters above me in here.

Good luck to everyone- have fun.

I'm in for 400/800 and maybe 1500 - young masters, ie Mens 30-34. Probably the most expensive couple of minutes racing I'll ever do, but its not often a "World Games" is held in your backyard! Apart from backyard cricket of course..

Good luck to everyone competing

W50 8k CC & 5K track. I wanted to do the 1500m as well but they changed the schedule. 1500m & cc on at same time for women. Bugger.
Huge fields and about half the competitors are international. Should be exciting.

Please note - there is another schedule on the website . They have finally decided to split the start ofteh cross country races into a male ( 1:30 ) and female start (2:30).

They still haven't changed the clash of the womens 1500m & cc races though.
I would have 34 minutes to finish my 1500m & get over to Paramatta Park. Don't like my chances of making it!

I'm in 10k, 8k xc, 5000m & HM. W40-44

Southy, 1500m is on Monday, a friend of mine (your age) is running in it as well as in the xc.
On Tuesday is the 1500m final.

Good luck everybody!

yes Lavenderlilly thanks, the heats are on Monday. But if you compete in the heats and qualify to go thru to the finals and then decide to do the cc race instead, then you are ineligible to compete in any other events for the duration of the Games .

See SPORT INFORMATION GUIDE - ATHLETICS

5.12 Failure to Participate

Athletes may be excluded from participation in all further events in the competition, including
relays, in cases where:
1. They confirmed for an event, but fail to participate
2. Have qualified in heats, qualifying rounds etc for further participation in an
event but then failed to participate further in that event
3. Failed to compete honestly with bona fide effort.

I would hope to make it thru to the finals and would then be committed to do the 1500 and couldn't do the cc race. So I have to choose one or the other.

I'm sorry Southy, I wasn't aware of all this, as I don't have to worry myself about heats and finals.
As for my friend, she wants to do both, even though she has a good chance of making it to the final in the 1500m (she has a good chance of doing well in the xc as well), I wander if she read the info guide...
Good luck to you in your decision and the race. :o

Hi Lavenderliily. Please make sure she knows, otherwise she may no longer have a choice.
I am probably more competitive in the cc race, although I like the 1500m too and had trained for it as well as cc. So I'd best go with the cc race. I would try to make it thru to the final in the 1500m but then would have to withdraw from the cc or I could no longer run the 5k.

AS 60% of my age group are in both the cc & 1500m (14 of the 25 entries in the 1500m are also in the cc race), they may very well find there is no need for the heats of the 1500m any more.

Best to read the Sport Information Guide.pdf

Southy before you make that decision to pull the plug, it should be remembered that the rules say "may be"it is not a foregone conclusion I would suggest that you contact the chief umpire and get a ruling from him/her as to what would happen. As you say half of your field in the 1500m is affected, do the rules state that finals will be held at heat time if the numbers do not warrant heats?

Remember the clash of events was not as a result of your actions, perhaps with a couple of days to go you could still contact the athletics officials and get a ruling, remembering that changes could still occur to the timetable.

You do not have anything to lose by asking the question.

I have complained to the officials but was told 'this is a minor clash and minor clashes are inevitable'. I pointed out to them the number of competitors in my age group alone (60% of the field), and almost all the womens age groups are affected by this 'minor clash'. But they have refused to respond to my emails now. I could go in the 1500m & not try to make the final - but what is the point? I'd rather save my legs for the cc.
If you confirm your entry but then pull out and fail to compete , you are out.
Thanks though for the suggestion. I will survive the disappointment.
Over the last couple of weeks when I discovered the change in schedule & the clash I have stopped the 1500m training and just focused more on the 5k & cc races anyway.

I'm in for at least the 10km road race. I originally entered the 10km, x-country, 5000 track and the half, but the final schedule puts me out of both the x-country and 5k track, and I'm in no real shape for the HM due to injury and illness. :o I'll see how I go in the 10km before I make a final decision. (Although I can't believe I just said that because I thought I'd decided yesterday that I couldn't do it.) Womens 50-54.

I'm going to pick up my accreditation etc after work this afternoon. I've heard there's an expo :D

Ok, picked up my accreditation pass & pack today, please warning to all of you who are yet to do it, allow about 2-3hrs of waiting in the queue.
And apparently they are expecting the longest queue on Saturday!

Edit to add that all of us who are running 10k on Sunday will have to pick up bib/chip on Sat from SOPAC.

Hi lavenderlilly
What do you mean that we have to pick up chip etc on SATURDAY, dont you mean SUNDAY MORNING?
I am doing 10km road, 8km x-country, 5km track, and half marathon. (64-69 age). Will be just cruising runs as training for Mt Wellington, Hobart (Point to Pinnacle - nearly 4000ft uphill) half in late November.

Maybe you should read the Athletics Info Guide haggis basher. It's all useful info, particularly this bit....

4.3 Confirmation of Entry
All athletes must declare their intention to compete to the Technical Information Centre for all
events they wish to contest.
4.3.1 Athletes in track and field events must declare as follows:
• A declaration to an event may be confirmed a maximum of one (1) day prior to the
competition or Tuesday for Thursdays events.
• For events that are scheduled prior to midday (12:00pm), declaration must be completed at
TIC by the TIC close time the previous night or Tuesday for Thursday’s events.
• For events that are scheduled from midday onwards (>12.00pm), declaration must be
completed at TIC two (2) hours prior to the scheduled start time of the first heat/round of
the event.
4.3.2 Athletes in out of stadia events (10km road race, Road Walks, Cross
Country and Half Marathon) must complete their declaration at the TIC by
5:00pm the day prior to the event. At this time athletes will be issued with a
tag/transponder.
4.4 Call Room
In addition to confirming their entries, all athletes competing in events starting within the
stadium are required to report in to the Call Room prior to their event. The Call Room for ALL
events will be located in the white tent above the 1500m start line.
In the Call Room athletes will be expected to demonstrate that their competition uniform, singlet
and numbers, shoes and other equipment comply with the competition rules.
Athletes will proceed to the start of their event from the Call Room ACCOMPANIED BY AN
OFFICIAL. Athletes who proceed to the event not accompanied by an official may not be allowed
to start.
The closing Call Entry Times at the CALL ROOM are (prior to scheduled event starting times):
• Pole Vault 70 minutes
• Discus, Javelin, Hammer, High Jump 50 minutes
• Long & Triple Jump, Shot Put 40 minutes
• Hurdles & Relays 30 minutes
• Other track events 25 minutes
This time allows for marshalling and movements to the competition site. The remainder of the
time may be used to complete the warm-up at the competition site where the competition site is
not in use (under the supervision of the officials).
If an athlete is already or likely to be competing in another event at the designated call time the
athlete or someone on his/her behalf must notify the Call Room of this prior to the designated
call time.

I was planning to register then "declare" on Friday and took that to mean I would be all done before 5pm the day before the event
Are you suggesting that declaration can't be done earlier than 1 day before the event?
Will I need to do the same again on Monday for Tuesday's XC?
I'm confused!

My understanding is that you have to 'declare' for every event you are entered for prior to that event according to the following, note the use of maximum:

4.3 Confirmation of Entry
All athletes must declare their intention to compete to the Technical Information Centre for all

Hope this clears things up cliffold. You will have to go out on Monday to 'declare' for the Cross Country on Tuesday. Thet say there will be a TIC at Paramatta as well for those events out there (I don't know if that means Monday as well). It's a bit of a PIA, but this is how major international championship events are run.

Thanks - I hoped the "maximum" only applied to stadium events as they didn't use that term in 4.3.2

Need to have a set of rules understandable for my gender, age category & mental capacity :o

Hi cliffold
We are having the same problem, isn't it funny, i emailed them as well!
I never received that email, with all this info on?
Being honest, i wouldn't have entered if I had known all this bloody nonsense.
All I wanted to do was to meet some new friendly runners, and enjoy the runs.
Havn,t seen ye for a while.
Cheers
Brian

Thx Laverderlilly for the warning. I am planning on picking up my race packet on Sunday when I arrive in SYD and then going over to Parramata to have a jog on teh cc course. I was hoping they would let me confirm for the cc race on the Sunday. I'd best get there early it seems.

I agree with lavenderrylilly - it is a must to read the Sports Guide as they are following IAAF rules in some things (and not others). If you don't read the document you may be caught out and arrive to find you are not allowed to compete.

Moondust why can you not do the cc & 5k ?

Minor complication in my life called "work". The original draft schedule had the CC at 7:30am, which would just about give me time to get there but 2:30pm is out of the question. The 5k at 8:00am is just about OK, but going back to Homebush before 5PM on the day before to register isn't. I've used all my holidays for actual holidays.

I don't mind - it didn't make any difference to the entry fee. C'est la vie really, but thanks for asking :o .

Just on the accreditation/registration thing - I've never participated in an international sporting event before, but really it's pretty ridiculous in 2009 to have to go out there 5 times to participate in 2 events. And there are sooooo many ways they could have reduced the queuing time yesterday. I was there for 3 hours and expected (naively as it turns out) to get both accreditation and registration done. The people who hadn't uploaded their photos previously would have been there at least another hour. And it was a shame for the expo people as well because everyone was so sick of queuing that they just picked up their backpacks and left - there were very few people even browsing the booths.

All credit to the vollies though - the lady who served me had been there since 4AM and was still smiling at 8:30PM. :D

So, if you are doing the 10km road race on Sunday morning and you haven't been out to the accreditation centre yet - I would do both accreditation and registration on Saturday (you'll have to do accreditation first). According to my booklets, the Games Centre (accreditation) in The Dome is open from 8AM to 10PM and the Athletics Technical Information Centre (VIP room 2 of the SOP Athletic Centre) is open from 10AM to 5PM. Please do your own check though.

I can't see how they would get more people in the accreditation centre on Saturday than there were last night. There are only 9,000 participants and they must have done >5,000 of them yesterday.

There are 28,292 participants from 95 countries for all the events according to the web site news. And on top of that there are thousands of volunteers who also have to have accreditation. So over the next 4 days they will have to process between 6,000 and 7,000 people per day. I think it will be busy all the time. I was planning on doing it all on Saturday in one hit, accreditation / rego for 10km at TIC / short hit out on the track (open 10:00am to 2:00pm), may have to rethink this as Saturday will probably be the busiest day at the Dome.

Fair enough - I've obviously mis-remembered a poster I saw out there yesterday. I'd still be tempted to do both at once (hindsight being the only perfect science) and get to the accreditation centre by 8AM. I'm not a good queuer.

oh Moondust, I am naiive too. I thought I could do both at once. I don't arrive until Sunday (that's when my motel accomadation starts) so it looks like I may be a very busy person trying to get it all done on Sunday. I better leave CNB early!

I agree, they could have made this process a lot easier - allowed people to confirm by email, etc.
They have made life difficult for themselves as well as us.
Good luck guys , I hope to hear how everyone goes.

What kind of photo did you upload? I guess I could just scan in a passport photo & upload it?

And we thought the Sydney Festival organisers had problems with just three races. :D
I just wonder what our o/s competitors think about the rego lark,I certainly don't remember such hassles at separate World Veterans Track and Field competitions where I have competed.Sounds very bureaucratic.
How many runners are actually entered on the program?Isn't that 29000 plus figure across all sports?
Good luck to all CR's and enjoy the events. :o

Yes Jimboy, that's across all sports.

There are roughly 8,000 names in the start list for all the Athletics events. Lets say that on average people have entered 4 things across the week then that makes it about 2,000 competitors for Athletics. There are about 800 runners all up (men/women all age groups) in the 10km road race, 64 in my age group alone.

Thank god for this forum. I must have mixed the times of the expo with the TIC closing time as I thought I had till 10pm to collect everything. Just changed all my flights and got hit with a fee but it is better than getting all the way there and not being able to run. Thanks guys for bringing this to our attention.

I thought I had read the regs clearly a while a :D go but I don't remember reading this bit. Gee if I also need reading glasses then I must be old......or was this only added recently? :o

On Sunday the Games Centre is open 8AM to 5:30PM and the Athletics TIC is open 6AM to 3:30PM. So you'll need to get your accreditation finished in time to get your registration done before they close - if that makes sense. :o

Just has to be a JPG file that looks like you. I used a copy of my work ID badge so a scanned passport photo should work just as well.

Best of luck.

Athletics TIC opening times from the Athletics Sport Guide booklet - in case it's useful.
