Ironman Australia, Port Macquarie, March, 2010

I have spent the morning contemplating taking one day off a week from work to train for this (i.e specifically the bike leg). Still only a vapourous idea, but if i do Nepean in November, and if I manage to struggle through Canberra in December, then that gives me another 12 weeks until March and...bla...blah.
Anyone else having similar wicked thoughts?

Port half in 2 weeks to qualify and then the full in March. Been training pretty much since the start of the year with a dedicated triathlon coach.
Very Exciting!!!!!

The PMHIM in 2 weeks will be a good hit out, with an indication on where i might put a line in the sand for the IM. im getting pretty excited about the racing already.

Phoenix - i did exactly that for my first IM in 2007. I discussed with my boss, then my coach (B+) and the day was used for swim / ride & run. I remember having one big melt down on a particular Wednesday when it all became a bit much. B+ was there to pick up the pieces. I survived it all & am very glad I took the time to train properly & enjoyed the entire day.
Good luck with everything for the big day!
Cheers,

Phoenix,
Why not get a structured program that allows a good spread of all the disciplines. Mine for instance is:
Monday Swim PM
Tuesday Easy bike session AM, Possible easy run lunchtime,
Wednesday Strength session bike AM, swim PM,
Thursday run lunchtime,
Friday swim AM
Saturday long run AM (up to 120 mins),
Sunday Long ride (Between 90 - 150klms).
Just a thought.
Cheers

To be honest, the long rides were really the killer when you start out. But if you structure your bike training well, you don't need to rely on regular 4-6 hour rides on weekends like some programs do - so you're not then sacrificing your weekend family time either
Best of luck - and Ratty, yeah there's still a possibility I'll line up. Can't do Port HIM (while injured I was roped into a team for the day), but am looking to validate at Canberra or bleak-city at the 70.3

Phoenix, what Miners said - you really only need to take a day off mid-week for a couple weeks during the largest volume training weeks (like, about now for me) when it is nice to do a big mid-week transition ride or swim/ bike session. I usualy fit in all my mid week rides before week and run after, swimming goes in any old how and weekends are for long stuff (No kids at home and a wife who works weekends - Ironman heaven).
Cheers.

I'm doing the Port Half in a couple of weeks as a qualifier, hopefully all will go well there.

What is it with Thursdays?? That's when I completely crash. Eating like a pig is so true too, sooo hungry all the time.
Hopefully I will be there in March (with a little friend but I will leave it to her to out herself) - Canberra to qualify, then Huski and lots of long rides and runs in between
Can't wait, seriously fricking excited

Mid week big session day is only really necessary if you are trying to build volume into your body or if you cannot fit that type of session in on a weekend day.
When I had Aunty K doing it she needed to get more bike km into her legs but doing a Saturday and Sunday would have been too much for her to cope with at the time.
Once you can ride with better intensity the need for big km is less and you can probably back up better on consecutive days so the mid week session becomes less relevant.
If you are crashing and burning on Thursdays then either you are working to hard too often on Monday-Wednesday or not getting to bed early enough and sleeping properly.
I agree and disagree with Miners on the day off thing. I agree that if you can take a day off as it does give you better recovery. However for most of us we are already struggling to fit everything in training wise so I suggest to most Ironman aspirants to schedule an easy day instead of a rest day, so an easy swim session or a very easy bike or run, and take a complete day off when you feel the need rather than have it no matter what.
Pheonix if you are considering Ironman then start training that way from now as the longer the build the more gradual the increase of both volume and intensity, which will help a lot to avoid injury.

I had an idea last night (whilst drinking WAY too much red wine).... Is anyone else interested in heading up to Port for a couple of training weekends on the course over summer? Thinking getting some really long sessions in each day, coming back smashed and sunburnt would be fun!
Ratty - you still keen?

and for general training times of running groups, cycle packs and group swims, have a look at our Training Tab on the website, or shoot me a PM and I'll find you something
edit: - and did you notice the Olympic Distance race on 7th March? We deliberately used that date for it's benefit to IMers-in-waiting. Staged at Wauchope it's almost guaranteed to be a tough race in warm conditions - so a perfect race-pace hit-out in the lead-up.

Having said that however, we've had some unusually warm swims over the course and in the ocean in recent weeks. And the temp variation has fluctuated more in this last 6 months than I've recalled over the last 10 years or so. So can't provide a 100% guarantee it'll always be a wetsuit swim, but feel 95% confident
Incidentally, I went for a ski paddle yesterday in the canals just on the other side of the IM swim course. The canals are separated by a concrete weir, and also don't get great circulation from the river currents. I paddled from the river "into" the canals, and the temp difference was huge. At least 3 or 4 degrees difference. So there's warm water out there - just should be fine while-ever the course stays where it is.
