Hi twoeggs,
My opinion is they are both fantastic products, however as I like a more padded foot on my sock I wear the guards more. with my thurlos. Having said that if I wear a thin pair of socks under them the compression socks work a treat. I'm sure if Rob Hall see's this post he will attest to the benifits they offer, oh yeh there will be a few who dont too, ;) but as we are all different thats just fine and dandy, I just wished 2XU did something that would fix my knee and Butt problems

And if you do choose to go down the path of 2XU drop me a PM, I can get you some at very nicely discounted prices around 40% off

I got both!
They're both good.
The socks give better support but in my opinion look "dickier". The white colour picked up some stains in the washing machine so now they look grubby.
The calf guards still give support, look a bit smarter, and add a bit of confidence when running. Sounds like an antiperspirant commercial.
Don't think you'd go wrong with either.

Do you have the ones with the stirrup or without?

without, think the stirrup would annoy me.
They don't move if you have the right size.

Do they support the achilles enough without the stirrup?

I reckon a lot of the support comes from higher up. By decreasing the bounce or shuddering in the calves, less vibrations transfer into the achilles (if that makes any sense). Just my opinion that's all.

I did have a 2 year ols achilles problem 6 mths ago. After 3 mths wearing calf guards/compression socks, it went away.....

I think FR - hit the nail ont he head, the support up the leg helps protect the lower parts.
For me there is a sense of more support from the socks.
And I cant wear the stirrups, the slightess thing under my foot just annoys me

I've had the calf gaurds for 3 weeks now and find them great, as my training weeks get longer I have had no problem with calf tightness after long runs. I have the ones without stirrups as I think they would annoy me on longer runs, would love to try the race socks to compare (but they do look a bit dickie) so if I was a better runner I might be able to pull the look off

I doubt it, I've never had achillies issues [touches wooden table with back of leg] or thought about them.
I only got them for calf support and they have performed well.
I'll add I haven't tried the socks, just my opinion on the guards.

The other thing I like about them for recovery is you can just bang one on even in the summer months where I wouldn't even contemplate wearing long compression pants as an example. Over summer I get around a lot in bare feet, where a sock thing would wear out pretty quickly too.

I'm thinking of getting some of these since I've started getting calf tightness problems. I seem to be near the borderline with 36.5cm calf girth suggesting size S rather than XS. I'm planning to wear them for long runs. Does anyone else have thoughts about whether I should size down or stick with the indicated size even if I'm near the bottom of the range?

Go the XS if in doubt. Best to try them on though if you can. They can take a bit to get on when they are new.

I have the skins guards which aren't very good as well as the 2XU which I love. I only wore the socks occasionally for my long runs when I was marathon training but mostly wore them as recovery after a run and/or overnight. I'm planning on ordering some Injinji compression socks as I wear the mini crew's all the time and love them.

Sook, I wear a small and these are very tight, try them on somewhere if you can as I couldn't fit the xs on similar measurements.

I took home the medium because I was on the borderline and after wearing them around home for the night took them back and exchanged them for the small. Much more compression just a little shorter. they feel much better.

My calves are 39cm, and using small guards.

The tightness with the band at the top of the calf may also force you back a size.
The XS was just too tight for me in this area.

I decided to go for 2 runs without the socks just to get ty to build up 'natural' strength. This was after the 2 races on the weekend where they worked extremely well. My calf went bang at 11km of a 21km run and I had to get my wife to pick me up. I can't say for sure the socks would have stopped that happening but I got through the weekend with minimal trouble and then to have it all let go on a jog was stupid, and not to mention incredibly painful.

The socks sqeeze the feet a bit which feels great in my arches which are stuffed. I like it the socks squeeze the feet so the feet don't swell up so much so the tendons in the feet aren't so elongated. The calf guards are black so I assume they get hotter in the sun, where as I don't notice the heat in the socks so much. Especially if they are damp. I use the compression shorts and they really heat up without a breeze.

If you are nice to brettsrun he can get them cheap.

Go for the smallest size you can fit .
