Hi Coolrunners
I am getting my appendix removed for chronic appendicitis on Friday. Has anyone else done this, and if so, how long were you out of action for?
Thanks!

I believe no heavy lifting or intense exercise for up to 4 weeks
I think the 1st week you will definitely not feel like doing exercise and then progresssively improve, but everyone is different and rate of recovery differs
Be guided by you doctor, but don't overdo things too early

Walshy, did you get your appendix out? I'm just trying to gauge the time that people have had off running. Thanks for your reply!

Hi Ells,
I had my appendix removed when I was 18. But that was almost 20 years ago so things have probably changed since then (is it keyhole now??)
I was back at work in two weeks, although it was a desk job so there was nothing strenuous, but still got tired very easily.
I was also playing soccer at the time, so I returned to very light jogging in about 3 weeks, and I think my first game was about 6 weeks after surgery.
Agree with Walshy - listen to your doctor and don't do too much too soon.
Hope this helps.

Gday Ells,
Speaking from my own experience, my appendix burst about 2 years ago and I had to actually get cut open rather than keyhole surgery to ensure all of the toxins (poison so to speak) was drained out. I was off work for 2 weeks and out of running action for 4-5 weeks and then came back running very slowly after that.
It took me quite a while to get my fitness back. Just dont try and do to much to soon or you may run into soft tissue injuries etc... and more importantly go by what your doctor says.
Good Luck.
Cheers
Brad

Hi, i had my appendix removed 5 years ago not long after my first marathon and i had just over 3 weeks off from work and running beacause i have a physically demanding job but i did some walking oh and it also hurt to ride so don't risk coming back too early for example look at Eamon Sullivan he recently had his removed and started training soon after and hurt himself.

I did have it out but it was 27 years ago when they used to slice you open.
I know now that it is a keyhole method?, but my research tells me that no heavy lifting or intense exercise for up to 4 weeks
but hey everyone is different, listen to your body, it will be the best guide, but you will be out for a few weeks

My appendix burst 9 years ago (on opening day of Sydney Olympics) and had the remnants sucked out via keyhole - 3 little cuts.
That was on a Friday, got out of hospital on a Monday, back at work on Tuesday (I think) with the pain easing every day. At the time people were warning me of all kinds of complications and horror stories of infections, etc. Bah-humbug!!
Although still a bit sore, I ran a 1/2 marathon the following Sunday (ie, operation + 9 days) - the AthsVic one - to make up numbers for the club and pace a mate. A little uncomfortable, but otherwise OK.
To cut a long story short I had no problems like the doom sayers were warning...but did end up with a running injury a week or so later, dammit!!!

Yeh cause mine burst and the muck got inside of me I was in hospital for 6 days on strong anti-biotics drip. Made me very sick - wouldnt wish it apon my worst enemy.
Also had to recover from a 6 or 7cm slice to my stomach, but that was the least of my worries.
