Had reasonable race yesterday- despite having to stop running with a really bad stitch in the run. Couldnt even stand up straight- so just had to wait till it passed. HAd a good swim- finishing 2nd in age group. Its never easy but a fairly comfortable swim overall appart from the embarrassing moment of putting my hand down right on another womans butt-

Really thrilled with the bike- have improved from 18th out of 20 for cycle leg to 8th out of 18. Starting to get the hang of it-even got down on the tri bars a couple of times- although not very good at drinking on the bike ( which contributed to my stitch- guzzled in one go rather than lots of sips). My goal for the cycle was to get under the bell of the bell curve- which I did- so prtty happy with my progress. Found the hill hard - 4 times my legs complained.

Run felt tough- and then got this unbearable stitch- can usually run through them but this was not possible. Stopped and probably lost a minute. Second lap was better once it passed.Ended up 3rd in run- so cant complain- time wasnt great though. A good run from me could have placed 1st in run- but wasnt to be. ( ineed to toughen up!!)
6th overall- 1:23. Have to be happy with that.

Steve ( footman) won his age group in the enticer by 1 sec- sprint finish. Mgilla- finished too but still getting grief from the achilles- Hopefully each of them will post their own reports.

I had the same problem as twosheds with the butt. Unfortunately it was a large hairy old man who had decided to break into breaststroke at halfway. I would be happy to trade my buttpat for yours. :D

I do not like long triathlons so I did the shorter enticer race that was a 300M swim, 10km cycle and 2.5km run.

I had a reasonably good swim coming twelfth out of 26 in my age group. I figure the swim is so short a part of the race that there is little sense in doing any training for it. My last real swim that was not splashing around to cool off was the previous Raby Bay race.

Because the races I do are short I do not use cycling shoes but cycle in my runners. This saves heaps of time in the transition. With the transition counted as part of the cycle leg I usually do well. I was the fastest by 47 seconds and got a jump on Mgilla who had run past me at my previous triathlon.

I tried to pick out athletes in my age group on the run but it was difficult. At the turnaround Mick was not far behind and I knew he is usually a better runner. Even with his sore Achilles I expected him to catch up. So I was running scared the last kilometre and 300M before the finish I saw the first runner in my age category. I stayed behind him until the last turn with 50M to go then out sprinted him before he could respond. I did not know at the time that he was the leader in my category but I ended up winning by 1 second. It was a surprise and now I have to win a few more to hold off Mgilla!

was a big day at Raby Bay !!
1750 or so raced ...kids races - enticer - sprint triathlon.over 2 hours of wave starts.
well done to Steve on an exciting win in his race and Mgilla for a 3rd on 1 leg.
P Horse chose well for his pre race hydration and rest ( copious amounts of wine and 3 hrs sleep :D ) and finished in the top half of his AG.
Two sheds...it sounds like you are sorting the bike stuff out - you will be flying before long !!

It was my 100th triathlon and hoped to celebrate with a strong race and a smile on my face...well not quite !! was one of the busier bike courses I have been on and whilst pushing fairly hard on lap 2 I came into a roundabout too hot and realising the fast approaching gutter was waiting for me a tiny alteration in direction saw me hit the bitumen !! Ouch - my garmin informs me I was doing 37kph just before entering ...lucky for me it must have been the smoothest road in the east as I escaped lightly after sliding several metres...up quickly and check for blood and spin my wheels to see I can still get going...was able to catch up to others in my AG by lap 4 and was very happy to still be able to run ok...finished 4th in the Gnarly Dudes ( old farts) and even my bike looks to have been lucky...now dealing with gravel rash and bruising but otherwise ok...
looking forward to 2010.

Congratulations on your 100th dingo, something memorable in there so you wont forget it soon.

Footman well done on your win, looking at your run split I think the run around SEQ a few weeks back did nothing to hurt you.

For me I was very happy to get through and finish with a 3rd knowing my strongest leg was going to be my weakest. With a grand total of 11km on my feet leading up to sunday and my achilles still giving me grief i've been working over time in the poole and on the bike.

From coming out of the water 10 from 16 2 months ago, I was 10 from 26 this time and the difference being I felt comfortable. I knew i'd be ahead of footman out of the water so I had to try and stay ahead on the bike. He told me the only training he'd been doing was on the bike, which showed as he went past me 500m before T2.

Into the run took me a bit to get going and missing a drink at the water station certainly didnt help. My plan was to just run at a comfortable pace so not to re inflame my achilles. I managed to settle into 4:30 pace, it hurt a bit but i didnt want to push any harder with Stella's recent mishap in the back of my mind

Was great to catch up with so many CR's especially my old mate PH who managed a technicolour yawn right on the finish line, well done mate.

Also 8yo junior mgilla who did his first tri and i'm so very proud of, he gave everything. Just have to put up with i'm a triathlete and the puffed out chest for a few more days yet (don't know where he got that from).

Footman the challenge is on, so when your sitting down to that second serve of xmas pudding think about it, and be afraid, be very afraid.

Cheers

mgilla

hey guys! i didn't get to chat to Linda and Steve, well done, sounds like big improvements all round.

Dingo - congrats on the 100th. i didn't realise it was a round number when you said that at the time, well done. thank goodness you in the gnarly category now so that's one place higher i can be for now.

Mcgilla, sorry to hear the achilles gave you grief once more, but you can still catch Steve for the season finale. will watch with interest. well done to junior too - he looked as ill as i felt beforehand, hope he enjoyed himself and will be back for more.

I was pretty happy with each of the three sectors and a 1:16:03 finish time. only just resumed training since NY mara and a little too much party and no sleep the night before had me a feeling rather ill before the race. but the swim was nice and refreshing in the heat, and the cooling effect on the bike meant it was really only the run that felt hot, as Robin WIlliams would say 'damn hot". i love how in tri's you can chase/be chased by the folks in your category on the bike and run... so i had a little tussle with a chap on the run and did the big surge at the end to hold him off. alas a little nausea hit me on the blue mat... hoping the finish photo cause the vommie, i'll buy that one if it did :D was esepcialy happy with a 22:06 run for the 5k.

see you at the next round
