Hi Everyone,
A quick question regarding the Brooks Trance 9 and the Asics Kayano 16.
I currently have a pair of Brooks Trance 5's. (yes i know their old but i didn't run for ages and they basically sat new in the cupboard for 3 years doing nothing before I used them :-(
The Trance 5's are now fast approaching their end of life with my new hobby! Note: I use orthotics.... Unfortunately I have flat feet (as some of you have seen before in person! lol)... They're basically a slab of meat! :-(
What experience have people had with the above 2 shoes and do you use orthotics in them?
I whipped down to a typical retail shoe store a couple of nights ago and tried on both the shoes with orthotics on-board! Both shoe's actually felt ok to me.
The trance 5's that I've used over the past 10 months have been adequate/ok.. But since the trance 5's were my first pair of running shoes. I really don't know what's Great/Good/Adequate.. Bad i think i can work out!
note: I never blistered with the Trance 5's but that was only when I didn't wear the orthotics in them.... however having the orthotics in is a different story entirely. The orthotics have been tweaked 5 times now. We're pretty close to getting it right. However I still tape the inside of my arches to prevent ANY blisters from happening!
Back about a 4 weeks ago. I had ordered the Trance 9's from running warehouse, but due a variety of reasons (my fault: credit card expiry issue :-( ... The shoe's were not sent!
So I'm about to try again...
Alternatively would instead you recommend a specialist foot store (North Western Melbourne suburbs way) to fit my shoes?
There's so many brands, types, support, control, GTS, Adrenaline, beasts, 2140's, etc..... arrrggghhhh!!!
I know that everyone's foot is an individual thing and someone saying to me 'bennie buy this!!!' is not really going to work since my foot would be different to their own. However if there's a general consensus then i can definitely take that on board about people's thoughts about the above two shoes....
Thanks everyone.....
Cheers.
Bennie.

Hey Bennie
You are probably going to get a whole lot of people come back to you with their preference of the two shoes you mention here, which probably won't help make your decision any easier. As you say, it's an individual thing and you need to get whatever works best for you.
For what it's worth, I've been wearing the Beast for years but have started getting shin splints and moved over to the Trance 7's for the Sydney Marathon last year. I have just ordered two pair of Trance 9's from the USA which I'll pick up when I'm there in a couple of weeks - they're a nice shoe for me at the moment.
The problem for most is the fact that these shoes cost so bloody much here in Australia (hence the reason I order and pick up from the USA when I get the opportunity) so you can blow a fair bit of cash if you get it wrong.
It's been great watching (reading) your progression up through the kilometres over the past year. Looking forward to a run together one of these days.

Bennie I wear Trance (without orthotics) as recommended by a pod. For some crazy reason (cheap price) I switched to Kayanos while marathon training last winter. Turned into a diasaster for me as I pulled a calf muscle on first run in K's, could have been coincidence, but things didn't get better. I went back to the pod who video'd me again in the old trance and the k's and it was clearly obvious which I was better in. He also advised K's too controlling and soft for me, 2150's would have been okay but definitely not the K's.
On the other hand my running partner Orlando is a very happy orthotic Kayano runner as recommended by the same Pod. So I would suggest you visit a sports pod who can do video analysis and make an educated assessment, you'll be happier knowing you don't need to keep guessing and can safely purchase.

I've been wearing the Trace (with Orthotics, except I am a high arch over pronator) since the 5, I've been though all updates right up to the 9 with no problems.
I find the 9 to be a lovely shoe and it is also a little lighter than previous models as well. Though of course this is just one person's opinion, has your podiatrist made any recommendations? Or you could try one of the specialist stores, if you work in the city try Shoe Logic at the Melbourne City baths, Runners World in Kew or one of the Active Feet stores.
Incidentally I have a pair of Kayano's, model 14 (I think) that only have 150km on them that are FREE to a good home, they are women's size 9.5. I was given them for a run leading gig in 2008 (Asics were the sponser of the fun run we were training people for), there is absolutley nothing wrong with them they are just not the shoe for me, they will even have brand spanking new insoles as I took them out to make room for my orthotics.
PM me if anyone is interested, you'll just have to pay the postage or can pick up if you work in the Melbourne CBD.
Sorry to hijack Bennie.

The yellow/grey ones that have just hit the shelves here (probably now old stock in the USA) retail at 280AUD here. In the USA, you can get them for about 135 AUD at today's exchange rates.

A quick comment. I bought a pair of Trance 9 (old colour) for $200 from Rebel Sports when the new colours hit the shelves. For the same shoe, an $80 saving is worth a look. Have worn Trance for years and love them. Also tried Kayano years ago but found them a narrow fit and not suitable. Could be different now. Cheers.

just a little info re Trance vs Adrenaline vs Beast....
Beast is a straight last, therefore will be the widest fit of those shoes (best suited to a flat foot)
Adrenaline is generally a tad more supportive than Trance (as it has a combination last), and Adrenaline is available in multiple width options (extra wide and extra narrow).
Run happy!
