Have got my head around this one now after almost leaving my legs out on the six foot track in the last 6km  :D

After 3 massages i feel a lot better now and have run twice since the big day, so happy

I'm keen to take the plunge for Hellgate - sounds just awesome

As i'm the 2nd runner in a pairs team for TNF which is 46k, this Hellgate is also 46k - how good is that for training distance!

Better get cracking and right back into consistent training then - see you guys there - not sure about camping the night before though - see what is happening closer to the time

The rule of thumb is about 1 hr longer than 6ft time. Although it will also depend on how your recovery has gone.

Looking forward to this.

Anybody else interested in "bouncing off the walls?" (100km option)

I'm in for the 46km..

I'll be heading down from Newcastle, if anyone needs a lift from here (or anywhere on the way) I'll have room in the car.  What time do I need to get there for the start? 1/2hr before?

Definately in for the 100km. The first posts of this thread seemed to be going along that track and I imagine that there will be a buildup in this thread approaching the big day.

so far only one person has tried the bouncing off the walls option and failed due to a risky river crossing. Milov is the only person to have completed twelvegate and everyone else has been buggered after 45 k

Did you get my PM message for a lift from the Central Coast, Schoey?

Of course except that if 100km is the goal it could be taken slower

I'm taking time off work and wouldn't mind going the whole hog if anyone else is interested. I couldn't find a map or course description of the whole 100km. Do you know where I might find it?

Hey Grant are you interested in going the whole 100km? Nickelass and I have both expressed interest in doing it. Perhaps if there were four or five it would be good.

if you go to the fatass home page and then pull up the 2007 hellgate thread you will find maps and gps waypoints as well as a few course notes.

I don't know Thomas, I think "buggered" might be a bit too polite.

One of the advantages of the "bouncing off the walls" option is that it's an out-and-back.  You can just take it as it goes and if you get too "buggered" you can turn back.

I'd still like to give it go :D Any other takers?

Interested? Always :D
Schoey's doing the 45km and can give me a lift back to the Central Coast but can't wait for me to finish the 100km.
If there's an option for a lift back to Hornsby or somewhere close to the Central Coast, I'd be happy to sign up for the 100km, otherwise I'm happy with the straight Hellgate.

Will water be an issue for the 100km?

I can drop you at Hornsby on the return if you like as it's not too far out of my way.  Central Coast is a bit too far :D

That's very kind Nickelass.
In that case, sign me up for the 100km.
Gonna be a loooong night out there with an 8am start and early sunset.

As noone's ever done the 100km before, is there an official fat ass way to BOTW?
Can someone put up a YouTube to show how its done? ;-P

What was heralded as the "premature ejaculation" hellgate turned out to be the "longer lasting" hellgate without the hellgate.

Spud changed his mind about running the official hellgate next week so i set off on a solo trek. Perfect day in the mountains and without the pressures of racing.

The Oaky Camp climb is a ripper, hit Kanagra Walls Rd feeling good and looking to PB sub 6hr. That's pretty much when it all turned to S%&t.

Made the classic trail mistake and didn't carry any maps, I knew the way right? Wrong. Missed the Blood Filly Fire Trail - still not sure how, then saw the Moorara Boss FT. That's when I started questioning myself "maybe the Moorara Boss FT runs into the Blood Filly and not the other way round. Take every left etc etc. Deep down I knew that this was wrong but kept going anyway. After about 6-7 kms I got some phone reception and rang Rod. We eventually worked out that I was probably going down the Blood Filly the wrong way on account of taking every left. So Rod told me to go back until I crossed a creek then take the next left and I'll be right. At this point I had done about 30k.

Problem was that if I was now on the blood Filly going the right way there was a left before the creek and on account of "take every left", it was obvious that I was not where we thought I was. I hate this dilemma - keep going and risk really getting lost or back track and just get out of there. So chose the later and got back to Kanagra walls rd at about 38km. Hitched a ride to the end of KW Rd and then ran down into Jenolan and back up 6ft to the BR camp ground. 55km in 7.14.

Still a top day out and a new experience.

I think I will call this one The Jenolan Caves Slingshot.

There were signs up saying that there is a car rally on next saturday and all forest roads will be closed. Shouldn't affect you but worth noting. Plenty of stinging nettles out on the river walk after Jenolan - give you a nice little zing on the shins.

Good luck next week guys, if the weather is anything like yesterday it will be a ripper.   :D

...And leave the "Dugdale Deviations" on hellgate up to Martin afterall he is the master.   :D   (I know too cheeky...sorry couldn't resist)

Good to hear you're back in one piece.

Rally will be a round of the NSW Rally Championship.  They were up there last year at the same time. Were there any signs around the deviation or other parts of the track?

Are we organising drops this year or just go self-sufficient?

There's a sign where you turn off caves rd up to the deviation, that all roads will be closed. However they were also racing there yesterday and they seemed to be mainly on the other side of caves rd.

Guys not sure there will be any water drops as in previous years. 2P has generously done this the past 3 yrs but have not heard from him.
Forecast is for 19C and sunny but I recommend carrying 2-3ltrs from the Caves (preferably 3ltrs) as the water in the Jenolan river is not recommended (even usng a steripen).
It's a long haul from the river up Moorara and along the Black Range back to the campground.

Looking forward to it.

You're right Spud. It has been a while since 2p dropped in. He was even quiet in the leadup to 6 Foot, which is very unlike him. It would be great if he was there to deliver his words of wisdom as well as some much needed water. :D

I'm carrying a 6L MSR dromedary waterbag. Also have a filter though I'm not sure if it's needed or useful.

Grant - carry lots. Would be difficult to do without at least one water drop at the Moorara/Blood Filly Trail head, pick up on the way out and then again on the return.
There are two creek crossings (Thurat and Kanangra) on the out and back to the Walls but not sure of quality?

Good water at the start and here:
Jenolan Caves (10.3kms) tap on RHS immediately after stairs
Jenolan Campground (12.5kms) tap just 20 meters further on from the locked gate.

Cheers

just a quick post, last year Terry and  I put out water drops and  Terry put out food at the start of the Blood filly fire trail.
when Trailpuddin and I got to our water drop on the black range we found empty bottles that I had placed there full the day before and a scene that looked like a garbage dump, be aware there is no garbage collection on this trail and if you drink from a bottle then take it with you to the finish. the back of the pack runners are not garbage collectors.

Hi team,

Good to see so much interest in this :D

Unfortunately I'm a non-starter and most likely won't even be able to put in an appearance.

For BOPers (unless it is cool) I think it would be hard to complete this without a water drop at Blood Filly.

When I was there in June last year the Jenolan Campground had been decommissioned so I wouldn't rely on the tap just past the gate at 12.5km working.

The trickiest parts are the right turn just past the gate to go up to Oaky and the Blood Filly/Moorara Boss intersection - the latter is a sharp left more like an inverted Y intersection than a conventional T - even walking last year my 2 companions missed it and I had to call to them to turn around.

Someone give the "Hellgate Tree" a pat for me :D

Good luck everyone - it really is the most fun you can have standing up.

Cheers, 2P

I think the 100K runners should try and start earlier - maybe first light?

Wadeye and I will be going up on Friday night so we can make an early start.

Any chance of you coming that night?  I can pick you up on the way through if required - I plan to head up after work.

I am probably going to start at first light as well that should minimise water consumption as well as reduce the risk of finishing in the dark because I am travelling pretty slowly right now.

Leave a nice cup of percolated coffee at the door of my tent on the way through will you.

You might be travelling slowly but its good to see you hitting the trails again. Finishing Hellgate will be one mighty come back statement.

Hi all,
I am a complete newby to this (and ultra running) but have done 6foot twice and am booked in for the NF100. So I was hoping for myself (Adi) and two others (Sally and Tony) to join you on Sat, for what sounds like a challenging outing.
I had one question. Some friends of mine went up last weekend to do a big run from Deviation and weren't allowed access because of the rally, so instead had to start at Caves Rd/6 foot, closer to Jenolan. We will be driving up from Sydney early on Sat for the run - does anyone know if we will be able to park/get to Deviation, or should we have contingency plans?

Last Saturday I parked my car at the turnoff from Caves Rd and started the run from there - its ony about 1km from deviation. I was concerned that if I parked at Deviation I mightn't be able to drive back out again. Due to some mis adventure (see above) I didn't run down the black range at the end so I'm not sure if the rally was happening there. The signs definately said the road was closed though and will be again 17th. When I got back to my car there was no sign of rally cars on this side - it seemed they were all on the other side of caves rd.

I think to be safe - park at Caves Rd and run to the Deviation. Sorry can't comment on what happens when you come out on the black Range - if there were cars racing on the black range it won't be safe running. I'm sure if you google NSW car rally you'll find a contact.

Found this map of the rally this weekend
Can anyone identify the roads to see if they will be using the Black Range road?

simple - lots of rally cars, turn around and run back down Moorara Boss down to the river and back for 90kms.  :D

Guess we'll know when we hit the Black Range..hmm

Edit: Thanks Cliffold, looking at the times we may be in luck? It appears the first cars will not be arriving till after 3PM?

Anywhere the cars will be passing through will be taped off and marshalled ahead of time - if we do stumble across some parts of the course then we just need to walk along the OUTSIDE of the tape and watch some great rallying to boot!

As soon as the cars are gone then the road will be open again. Meanwhile sit back relax and enjoy the free entertainment.

Looks to me like the rally is just north and west of the Black Range road - at least according to google maps.

Looking more closely at the maps it appears the SS5 route they are using ends on Black Range Rd where we come in off Caves Rd toward Deviation.
Shouldn't be a problem if we park closer to Caves Rd as Tom suggested.

Good chance me and Brick are camping at Deviation camp ground Friday night (I am hoping Brick hv a better tent than mine!)
I want to explore the idea of EARLY(or Earlier) start @ 7am instead of 8am? Keen to finish the run before 1pm

What do the rest think? Since we have no water drop, early start could be good??

I am afraid I am likely to be out.
Have only just returned from unexpected trip overseas and need to spend time with family this weekend.

Does "updated" have anything to do with likelihood of being buggered?   :D

I had my fun last weekend - this weekend I'll be on a rugby tour with my son. Although 2 weeks in a row is tempting.  :D
