HI
I am a 34 year old Male . I run 2-3 times a week - run 1/2 marathon in 93 mins and have played football for years ( Soccer )

Just started back training and I am being smashed in the sprints - two questions

1) Is it simply my age causing this or are there other factors

2) Can I reverse this in anyway ? ( IS there sprint training in the city - )

Note I have very tight Hamstrings and Glutes ( Would of had this before too though ) but cant see that this would account for much % of my decrease in speed

Any advice greatly appreciated

Perhaps the fast twitch muscle fibres in your legs need to be retrained, restrengthed and restored to their former fast selves: with an appropriate amount of gradually pace increased running over the short distances.

Fartlek training is what I do to try and do the above. A lost cause for me I am afraid though as fast twitch fibres are the first to go in the aging body (I am 50).

All the best with it because I think a faster runner over 100m will probably run a faster half marathon given their endurance is equal.

1. age - NO, other factors - YES

2. can be reversed - YES

there is everything in the City.

But, who you wanna be ?

halfmarathoner who also likes to show off in sprints or

sprinter, who occasionaly wanna do half as a social funrun

?

Rudolf is correct - what do you want to race in? You wont be maximising your potential if you try and do both.

For example i did a 8 week beginner sprint program at UQ after a 9 year break and by the end was running high 11's for the 100m but couldn't break 20 minutes for 5km. I was carrying a bit of extra weight and slightly injury prone so probably not the best example.
I would proceed with caution, especially training in spikes on tartan, as it is very stressful on the body, particulary calves, as it used to take me 5 - 7 days to recover from a 1 hour sprint session.
Are you being smashed in the 100m, 200m or 400m? The 100m is more technical and all about the start, wreck that and the race is over. Its not a great indicator compared to the 200m unless you are practicing block starts etc etc.
