Hi all, first time poster here :-)

I've been running on and off for the last 12 months with little improvement beyond a 60min 10k. The problem is I really just like running without any structure and my running is very inconsistent due to work demands.

My new year's resolution is to be a more consistent runner. The only way to motivate myself and to not let the rest of life get in the way of my running is to set myself goals. Therefore, my 2010 goal is to run a sub 2hr half. I will be taking part in the SMH Half and the Blackmores one in September.

My question is has anyone successfully used an online coach to help them achieve a certain time in a half? Due to circumstances, I'm unable to join running groups and will need to do all this training alone. Having a coach will keep me accountable as too often, I don't run as I'm too tired or something comes up (insert excuse here). I'm after someone who can set a challenging training program for me, to explain fartlek, tempo runs etc..and someone I can touch base with via email once in a while. I've done generic readings on all these running jargons but I'm not confident that I'm able to translate that into something personalised nor useful for myself.

I've read the threads on Pat Carroll, Sean Williams... are there any others out there that people have tried successfully?

Thanks for any advice/recommendations!

I have just started a program from Pat Carroll and am really happy so far. Every thing is easy to understand and is challenging enough without being too hard for me to do. I can feel myself getting fitter but have not raced since starting the program so time will tell! He is available via email.

Both Seans and Pats programs are very good, I would however suggest that if you can go to face to face coaching it is the way to go, and would be something that both of them would also recommend.

Sean and Pat do face to face coaching, which I believe is much more effective than an online program.

There are a number of coaches who are based around Sydney, Sean is in the Eastern Suburbs, There are a number in the Western Suburbs(Including Myself) There are a few around Illawong /Campbelltown/Sutherland.

If you have no other choice then the online is the way to go.

Hi Lynne, and welcome to CR. I have been doing a Pat Carroll online program for 15 weeks. I used it to get from 21k- 32k for King Island. I am yet to achieve my time goal as the race is in 3 weeks. I have really enjoyed the program, heaps of variety and Pat has been very helpful, friendly and prompt with replies. I have learned a lot about running and myself over this time and it was a great introduction to a formal program. I would recommend it if you are someone who can stick to a plan and are self motivated but need a bit of guidance to make each sesson count. There is a thread about it in other training topics ( I have no idea about addng links :D ) All the best, K

Thanks all - really appreciate the responses! The only reason I asked for referrals other than Pat Carroll & Sean is because I thought they were more geared towards elite competitors and not novices like myself. :D I would love to do face to face coaching but would need to look around lower north shore where I work. Mavbe will attend running clinics when it gets closer to the SMH Half but in meantime, I'll continue looking for an online coach.

Hi lynn
I used sean and he is fantastic plus you can go to his camps for some face to face being in sydney.

He listend to me and my program was always challenging and varied.

Only reason i stopped was im not able to afford it right now but soon as i settle in melb and have my own place i plan to pick him up again and will look at his camp later this year if im well enough to run.

He actually is very good with beginners and very good with feedback etc
