Third SMH half in a row for me. Second best time tho in about 86.20. Any Sydney Marathon Clinic people there? I got the train in with Heather, but didnt spot anyone else. Always a good event, but getting  a  little bit crowded. This event has the most portaloos than any other event I have been in, saves heaps of time at the start - good on ya Kenny.  Congrats to all who PBed (or not like me)

What an absolutely sensational Sydney morning and perfect running conditions.  Even though this was my 3rd HM, I was still very nervous on the train.  But as soon I stepped into Hyde Park with the sun rising and the atmosphere buzzing, all the nerves vanished.  I bravely nominated 105 as my goal but secretly didn't think I could do it.

Saw some fellow West Syd CR's Stem and Nite Time Runner.  As a running newbie, it's good to see some familiar faces before an event.  Also met Plu while lining up.

From where I started, self seeding seemed to be much better this year - there didn't seem to be as much zig-zagging as last year as everyone started off at a similar pace.  Met up with CountryMuzz in Macquarie St also targetting a similar time.  First 5km felt really easy, but was shocked to see we were running sub 5's (a bit quicker than I had planned).  DecaDad loomed up just before the first drink station looking strong.

Found Hunter street easy the first time around, and the Domain was very pleasant.  First 10km in 49.14, well ahead of schedule.

Started to fade a bit on the second lap but pace still good until Hunter Street knocked me around.  It took a while to recover but got it back together heading into the Domain.  Second 10km 50.31.  Hang on a sec, 105 is still possible!

Into the finish straight, crowd buzzing, crossed the line - watch says 1.45.12 nett time.  Missed the 105 by 12 seconds but absolutely stoked with a 2min30 HM PB and 8 minutes quicker than last year.

Great to meet some CR's for the first time Nando and MsMook - and good to also catch up with Thomo and AaronR.  Good to hear of some other PB's out there today as well.

(Apologies for the long report, but I am on a high  :)  :D  :D )

First ever HM.

Absolutely loved it. Was hoping to run 2.15 and did 2.10, so really happy with that.

What a great course. Thanks heaps to all the CRs that gave me a cheer along the way.

  Can't wait for next year!!

One complaint - can't believe they ran out of fruit so early at the finish - there were still heaps of    runners after me and we all missed out!!

Hi Gang,

Great day hey. My fist HM and I was aiming to go under 100 and made 95:46, so really happy. Went out a bit quick, but held it together and come home without much left. There were some times where the mind questioned why I was doing this as it was hard work.

I was surprised that the start was so good - not too much clutter and after the first km, there seemed to be enough room to do what was required to settle into a rhythm.

I guess next time I really should get a CR top and look the part.

Next decisions, can I build the kms in time for M7 Mara ?

Cheers everyone,

Ben

Well done on the CRs who posted PB''s! The weather conditions were perfect.

After aiming for a sub 100min run I was very pleased to finish in 97 minutes.

First 5 k's was a battle forcing myself to slow down and stick to my target pace to make sure I didn't suffer in the last 5. I felt great (more like relief) after the 2nd climb of Hunter Street and loved the cardboard signs around Argyle Street "Warning: Extreme Chaffing Ahead" and "Run faster, there are zombies behind you!".

A good training run for GC Marathon.

I had a good run. A bit disappointed that I haven't yet cracked 2:00 (I blame the crowds and not my fitness! :D ), but that will come! Lots of people this year!! When the road were one lane it was pretty crowded and you had to pay attention and couldn't enjoy the scenery so much. Nice to meet Graham, Chris, Lee and Rachel. Gave a wave to a few others going in the other direction. Looking forward to the next one to try again at 2:00!!

Yay I made it!  Was a tad nervous at the start as have been sick with yucky virus thing and 3 weeks off  - hardly any running at all.  Felt good first 10k and then faded badly in second half with very heavy legs.  But the beauiful day, other runners and crowd pulled me along and although a PW very pleased to come in under 2 hrs.  Hopefully today will now give me the kick-start to resume training for the Hunter Valley marathon ............

I think I just snuck under 84 mins for a big PB. Superflake got me on the beer bet with a fantastic ~83:30. All looks good for his sub 3 attempt in a few weeks.
Had a pleasant run sharing pacing strategy and conversation with another Terrigal Trotter until about 16km.

I could see a strider with a CR hat just ahead for the first lap and eventually caught up on the second to see that it was Superflake. I asked him what BlueDogs Mum would have said about his run and you should have seen him take off  :D  Yeah, yeah, I should take my running more serious and not have time to fool around.

I did briefly get in front of Flakey, but then I unexpectedly got a stitch (haven't had one for donks). I slowed and breathed a bit more to try and get rid of this and Flakey got back in front. Eventually I did a little burp around the chair and all was good again and I resumed 4 pace.

Finished a little under 84, somewhere between Superflake and Hamburglar (who I never saw). Not a PB, but that wasn't something I set out to do, just a solid run to join the sub-3 hour hopefuls at GCM.

I've never done this event before. I thought it was excellent. I was a little spoilt with my preferred start and being able to warmup and only get behind the line with less than 10 minutes to go. I thought the hills and turns added interest to the course rather than running the same pace all the time.

Thanks for posting these photos. The one of Dent overtaking a group includes a friend of mine (in blue t shirt)who has run like a shot horse since the Paris Marathon and was out to all hours on Friday. I can use this to him remind the importance of self discipline!! Brilliant.

This happens at every event where you have these numbers. A lot of people take way more than they need and this means that others miss out. I would have been certain they would have run out of those PowerBar things to as well as the GUs at the end. I saw several blokes help themselves to about 10-15 Powerbars. This is just pure greed if you ask me. Noone needs that many. When I asked someone clutching several if he had been shopping at the refreshment table, I was greeted with a death stare.

To solve this is easy though- they should just have an expo to pickup the numbers, everyone should get 2 GUs in their pack (you don't need anymore in a half) and maybe put one Powerbar in each pack or in the bags with the newspapers at the end. Problem solved. More to the point I heard alot of the slower folks saying there was no water at the stations at the back of the pack. Again easily solved with the water sachets just being placed on the tables to make life easier for the volunteers.

I was puzzled why they were handing out Gu's at the finish, can't quite see the logic?

And well done Sam on your time, thought you were aiming for 1:45 when you were chatting to me on the first lap?  :D  I ended up with a PB (1.39.5x), so very happy with that.

Congratulations on the winners today. Dent and Fien. Sensational runs.

1. Marty Dent 64:28
2. Harry Summers 66:45
3. Russell Dessaix-Chin 67:15

1. Cassie Fien 71:59
2. Melinda Vernon 74:50
3. Anna Thompson 75:29

I had a great run this morning. No idea where it came from as I'm doing nothing fast at the moment. All Marathon pace runs or Long distance 30k stuff.
Arrived early and started off near the front with Nando and Tesso. Went off hard early and somehow held the pace. Was at 15:10 after 5ks and there I remained with a 50 sec buffer under the 84:25 needed for 4/min ks for the rest of the race.

I did have Mick in front of me near the start at one stage and I think he caught me back up Argyle Cut on the 2nd lap. Lucky Blue Dog never saw us talking. He would surely have belted both of us.

Thought Mick was gone when I had a drink under the bridge but somehow I passed him after that and held him off to the finish. Never saw Hamburglar thank god. I think he was running behind me trying to hand over the 6 pack. :D

Finished in 83:34 a 1:06 PB and a 3:13 course PB. Very happy! Sub 3hr Marathon at Christchurch looks doable now.

Thanks to the organisers for the race, and the crowd and runners yelling out our names really helped as well.

Had a great race myself finnished in 1.37 something, started 1/3 from the front and did find that I had to zig zag the first 4 km's. Best part was walking home and a little girl in Hyde park noticed the medal and gave me a Great Job comment.

Thanks- well done on your time to. You are clearly in good shape. Just make sure you take the foot off the pedal now until the race. You have done all you need to. Very little will help you do any better now, but you can certainly worsen your time by doing too much now.

I did go a little fast, but felt really good and that young Canadian girl running with me also managed a PB so I was very pleased for her considering she claimed to not have done much. In fact I was tempted to seriously negative splt that second half, but had to restrain myself - we did the final KM in just shy of 4mins. Amazing how the 2000km for Comrades makes one feel invincible - in hindsight I could have given 83 a good shake the way  was feeling. Nevermnd though - the half marathon has never really nterested me too much - way too little distance and time for it to start to play mindgames with you.

Just a final comment on the run - I found it not very lively, aside from people that knew me, not many were getting going with the banter. In fact a lady got annoyed with me at about 16k telling me to 'Shut up and run' - sorry lady just like to keep the mood positive.

Great runs by Superflake and Hamburglar for sub 84s. To think that I used to do battle with you guys. :D

Congrats to everybody who ran PBs. There sounds like there were a few.

What a great day....

Third time doing this race and though there were huge crowds and resulting bottlenecks....I'm hoping for a PB on this course of breaking the 105min mark.

There is something very special about this race - particularly seeing groups like CanToo who support many new runners to achieve something they never thought they would do!

Happy overall with my run.

End result was 1:54:01 (pretty sure missed sub 1:54) gun time. Net time would of been around 1:52:10's. Finally finished a half back under 2:00:00. Been quite a few years since I have achieved that. Last time was 2002/03 SMC series by their records.

Well done Thomo - that's a great run - especially just coming back from injury.

Well done to all the other Crs too.

My Appologies,

Thanks Fossil for pointing that out. And sorry Ellie80 for the confusion! As Fossil said, they were the results from the wrong year. By the way, top run fossil. Congratualtions on the sub-72!

Superflakes post has the correct results and I have amended the results in my post as they were 2006 not 2010 results.

Awesome run from Harry Summers! May be the run of the day

Sounds like most had a great day out.

Congratualtions to all who took part

Great run. Absolutely beautiful conditions. Good chat with Glen from Newcastle at the start and Spencer from FoxTV soccer at the massage tent afterwards. Seemed to be less CRs out there this year. Just coasted and enjoyed the run and came in around 93 mins, same time as last year but felt much fresher at the finish. Might give the sub 90 a crack next year if I could give a ****!

Gave Norma,  Lucky Legs a great cheer. Had to explain to a new CoolRunner, Aaron (not big Aaron) who LL was and her achievements.

Thomo, thanks for explaining who Norma was - good of you to nearly remember my name under the circumstances (Andy, but close - it begins with A :D ).

Excellent conditions and did an Australian pb of 1.43 - still nearly 3 minutes outside my UK best set 7 years ago at Bath.

Some feedback - 18km marker seemed to be 100m or so too early.  It would be nice to have an extra drinks stop, maybe as you come onto Sussex St.  This would also give you a drink on a flat part of the course - the drinks stop at Mrs M chair is hard work as it's on a start of an uphill bit of the course, so difficult to start running after you've walked 10 paces or so having a drink.

Great day out - will be back for my fifth next year and try and crack the 1.40.

Andy

I had a great time today -my first Half Marathon. I was thinking I'd do about 2:30, so to come in with 2:20 and some change was unexpected and awesome!!

I saw Sook early on (is it me whose name you couldn't remember?) and then caught up to Emma a few minutes later -and then Slowmo passed us both at that same moment!

Gave a bunch of other shoutouts to CRs along the course.

Agree with the comment about the fruit all being gone -I really wanted a banana just after finishing but there was nothing lft and it looks like they'd run out some time earlier.

Disagree with the water running out comment -I can't have been far from the back of the race, and the water stops were all well stocked when I passed them.

Overall, a great race and I'm already looking forward to the next one.

Hello!

I'm an immensely slow runner, and tearing my quad at the beginning of the year didn't help. Not running for two months did dreadful things for my fitness.

Today was my first race since my injury, and I was slower than I am used to.

That being said, I had a great time. I wore a t-shirt with my name on it, and an amusing slogan. I think several hundred people learnt my name! Since I'm an extrovert, I run for applause, so that is gratifying.

Good first 5km, got lapped at around 9km. Got past the cut off, which amazed me, then I was coming last. Poop.

A thing happened that gobsmacked me. I was jogging along, and two people at my pace asked if I was running the half-marathon. I was puzzled and said "Well, yes, 21km is the plan." Apparently, there are people who enter this one for a single lap, because they do not wish to go 21km. I have a DNF, and it haunts me. I cannot imagine entering a race with the goal of putting in a DNF.

Second lap, I lost a pile of people, and was coming last for ages. This never makes me happy, but I just kept groving along. I caught up with some people at about 20km.

Great pre-race organisation: excellent number of porta-loos.

Post race organisation? Um. Look, I recognise that I'm slow. And quite frankly, I'm not very good at this. They had run out of medals. I run for medals. I collect my race medals, they hang in my dining room. I'm told I will be mailed a medal. I will mope if this is not true. There was no fruit left, no sports drink, and no bags of stuff left.

During race organisation? Excellent. There were a vast number of volunteers, I self support for drinks (because I'm precious about sports drinks while I run.) so I didn't notice a lack of water. People were kind to the slow, fat chick churning it out, so all was good.

On the whole, excellent day, just a few little things.

1.46.45 ish
Not great, but not bad. I knew I was going to have trouble before I even got to Hunter St, the downhill section. I went through half way on time for a 1.40.00 finish, but knew i would fall apart after that. added an extra 6-7 mins secound time round with a few scenic walks.
I learnt two good lessons.
1. don't expect to come back 100% after two weeks sick
2. don't do a 5k warm up run before a Half :D (didn't actually realise how far away I had parked the car...)

I saw a number of Cool runners i knew, Thomo, craigus, sorepaws, Sook54. I also saw quite a few people I hadn't met, but being I don't have a CR hat or top, I didn't want to go up and introduce myself and have to explain why I such a cheapskate to have not got a hat. I'll buy one before the M7, or perhaps a CR beenie!

Thanks for the walk back to the central sorepaws, I finally got a coffee, but it wasn't until i got to redfern! Withdrawals were kicking in by that stage!

I had a nice day, but if someone could ask the guy in charge of the heater, if he'd mind turning it up a few degrees, it would be loverly. I don't know how i am going to cope with the M7 mara in july!

Just saw your post race interview Uncle Dave..those charming Criniti genes came thru again. Trust me Emma, I've run a quite a few races, and the size of the runner doesn't matter it's a matter of not giving up..which you are proving, well done. Now J.D let's talk about marathons again..

Hello!

I'm an immensely slow runner, and tearing my quad at the beginning of the year didn't help. Not running for two months did dreadful things for my fitness.

I saw you a few times grinding away.  You had the same pace each time...I am really pleased you turned up, competed, and finished!!

Well done.

Today was my first race since my injury, and I was slower than I am used to.

G'day Emma, you did well today! Saw you out there and recognised you from the hobart run. Was that when you did your quad?

As always, I love this event and today was no exception!  Perfect cool morning; spectacular scenery; great fun running through the otherwise busy streets of Sydney and the run went according to plan.

It must have been the huge shout from Thomo, "Go Norma!" that sent me rocketing on my way to bettering last year's time of 2:26:09 by 5 minutes to see 2:21:16 on the finishing clock!  You can do that anytime in the future, Thomo!

Thanks to others who called out encouragement along the way.  Nice to run a couple of kilometres with Sook54 when she wanted to run at a slower pace!  Volunteers...fabulous; thank you!

I had a perfectly wonderful day!  :D   LL

Edit:  To put in the number of seconds...taken from Monday's paper.

Reasonably pleased with run, especially struggling with a sore hammie all the way.
Finished in 1hr 59 mins. Slowest for years. Feel that from now on, my
running will be for pure enjoyment. (70 age July this year)
Might try one more 6ft, for my 70th birthday!
Congratulations to everyone who took part.
See Ya

Ps: Saw a runner doing the half today in his bare feet!

Andy

Sorry Andy for getting your name wrong. Congratulations on the Aussie P.B

Around 2:05 for me so no where near a PB but very happy with a course PB by around 5 mins.
WallyGator, at least you got a course PB.

I was aiming for a 1:45 as well but only managed 1:50 (3 min off PB) which i'm still happy with.
Training in the last 4.5 weeks had been affected by the arrival of a newborn (#3). Couldn't get in as many runs as i would have liked especially longer runs.
That Hunter St hill the second time around really hurt.

Congrats to all the finishers and well done to everyone that got a PB.

Likewise. Anyone else who did not get a medal let me know - I have box loads of all sorts in my bedroom closet you can take your pick from any except for my Comrades medal that is earmarked for someone else already. Surely a race that has 10500 entrants would make at least 10500 medals???

Another thing I thought hilarious was the guy on the mike at the start (who did a great job all day), but who commented before the start that if anyone had left theie chip and/or bib at home then they could come down and get another one. Now what is to stop me rocking up on the day having not entered, giving my mates name and date of birth and running in the same number as them??? Just a thought..

I think what happens is that if you left your chip/bib behind you get a new set (ie new number) and the old ones get cancelled.

Your mate mightn't be too happy, but one sees your point. Lucky we're all honest.

"The guy on the mike" was none other than course record holder Pat Carroll.   And he didn't mind telling the masses eiver!

My physio is in awe of my pain thresh-hold. I think I started the tear in June of last year, while marathon training. I completed the marathon, but from videos I'm favouring my left leg even from 5km... After the marathon I ran 4 half-marathons, over 5 months.

You see, I'd taper, it would feel better, so I'd race. Then my legs would hurt. Repeat...

I thought it was a tight muscle, because it would hurt for a while, then I'd feel really good at about 8km, and I'd start to really hurt at 19km. But, as we all know, there is no pain at 8km. And you know, things hurt at 19km.

After Hobart, I tried to run 5km, and I gave up at 3km. In all my training, I have never given up during a run. Then I went a physio, who was amazed I could even walk 21km with it.

Ooops. I've heard about listening to your body, I might try that one day. I am now keeping track of which bits hurt, so I know if one muscle is giving me grief for more than a few days.
