Last year a small group of runners set off to recreate the original Melbourne Marathon course-with a couple of slight changes. It started with Soy Latte, Luckyguy, Staypuff and myself, with a huge cheer squad of ummm-well 2 cyclists (Greybeard-sporting a new clean shaven look so none of us recognised him and Wobblyman), Mrs Wombat and Mrs Luckyguy seeing us off. PB joined us for a bit, Staypuff, in a major break from character, pulled out at 24km because her physio told her too!!, Maryclaire joined us for the second 1/2 and EatEm and Duckgirl joined us for 32km or so. Mrs Wombat drove the support vehicle stocked with food and drinks and 3 of us ran the full distance. Afterwards had lunch and coffee at Southbank, topping off a perfect day.
Feeling bad that you missed such a great day? Well don't be-cause we're doing it again!
Date/Time-Sunday 13th June, 9:00AM
Place-We'll start from One Mile Bridge, but if needed we can meet at Frankston Station earlier and ferry runners to the start.
Support-this is a Fat Ass run so support is limited. Mrs Wombat will be following the main group with the car and food/drinks. Anyone wanting to have a change of clothes at the finish can put them in the car as well. For safety's sake, all runners need to exchange mobile numbers with Mrs Wombat so if we lose you we can find you again. Runners are expected to advise Mrs Wombat if they pull out along the way.
Getting back to the start or where you left your car is for you to arrange. Mrs Wombat and I can drive a couple back but that's it. If you park at Frankston Station you can just catch a train back from town.
Route-Same as last year: Start at One Mile Bridge (Corner Overton Rd and Nepean Hwy), follow Nepean Hwy to Mordialloc, then head along Beach Rd and then The Esplanade to Brighton, then move onto the path along the beach to St Kilda, run up Fitzroy St and then St Kilda Rd to finish under the spire at the arts centre. Last year this measured very slightly over marathon distance at 42.8km on my garmin.

16 downloadsPace-Last year we stayed as a group for most of the run but finished as 2 pair. I was in the back pair and we were about 6:30 pace. I'd suggest about 6:00 pace for most, but there could be some faster and some slower. Everyone is welcome to run at whatever pace they want but bear in mind the support vehicle will be where the most runners are.
After party-Well maybe not a party-depending on how many of us there are I'd suggest going to the food court at Southbank for a meal and coffee and tall stories!
Distance-There is no need to do the whole run. Anyone can feel free to join us at any time. Last year some suggestions were (based on about 6 min pace):
9.00am Frankston - 42.2km -
10:10am Aspendale - 30.xkm (Mordialloc 28km)
11.00am Black Rock - 19.xkm (Haydens Road/Beach Road intersection ~21.1km)
11:35am Sandringham - 16.4km (Small St north of Hampton Street ~15km)
12:10pm Bay Street, North Brighton - 10km
12:40pm St Kilda Station - 5km
1:15pm Arts Centre finish
With drink stops and everything, last year we finished later than this-about 2 if I remember right.
As this is only 2 weeks after Williamstown Marathon, I'm not sure if I'll run it all myself. I'll definitely be there though, either running or supporting. If anyone else feels like supporting with a second car, that would be great.
That's all I can think of for now-looking forward to seeing you all there. If anyone interested can post with their pace and distance, it would be appreciated.
Wombatoutofhell-6:00 pace - 42.? distance.
