Both ran amazing races.

Tamsett won by a decent margin today while St Lawrence was pushed all the way by Shelley.

They have both worked hard for many years to get those results, congratulations to both of them.

A congratulations also has to go to Longarms, the distance running coach from Sydney who has coached these two runners to great acheivements.

Congratulations to the male & female placegetters and all of the people who ran today.

I was wondering the same thing - odd that the TV coverage didn't even mention the 2nd/3rd! I suppose it can be hard to spot them in the midst of all the men.

Loved how Moneghetti could do commentary while climbing Heartbreak Hill and still finish under 44min..legend.

Awesome!!!! Huge congrats to The Saint and Lara. Very gutsy run from Benny to stick with them and kick away and Lara cruised through and looked pretty comfortable as expected.

It's a shame there isn't a third big trophy for Longarms for the years of hard work he's put in to developing these two champions as well as many other hackers like myself!

Major kudos to St Lawrence, Tamsett and Long Arms.

Tamsett looked very smooth and comfortable.

St Lawrence had to dig very deep for an epic win that will be long remembered as one of the great C2S victories. When was the last time we had a pack of three runners on Campbell Parade with less than 800 metres to run? Has it ever come down a one second margin before?

Easy as. The top three women are all running in, what, the top 150 or 200? It isn't that crowded at that point.

At Ironman at Port Macquarie they simply have a mountain bike rider with a flag designating 1, 2 or 3 escorting or following the leading men and women. A similar thing would work from 5km when the leading women come through. Better still, use motorbikes with a TV camera operator riding pillion.

Lazy coverage from 10.

The top 4 female runners had a kid with a numbered flag run with them down the finishing straight so it wouldn't have been that hard. The TV coverage I am watching now is showing Lara (briefly) but none of the others - bit shoddy!

The top 3 women if I remember correctly -1.  Lara Tamsett, 2. Cassie Fien, 3. Trengrove.

great race to watch on the telly.

Have to admit with a few km's to go my money was on Jeff Hunt, but was cheering out loud for Ben to pass Shelley up the final straight.

well done to Lara also.

Good job Long Arms

Congratulations to both runners and isn't it great to have a NSW double.  First time since 1994 when Paul Arthur and Heather Turland won, I believe.

Great race to watch and wish I could have been there.

Just a reminder of posting etiquette and not mentioning winners names in thread titles. I know that Plu for example hadn't seen the race and may have wanted to avoid the news before watching coverage.

Another big congratulations for Sean and his runners. Great coaching well done.

Also a big thumbs down to 10 for using Susie, she may have been a great runner but as a commentator she was crap.

It was pretty clear she was not up to the task, it was as if she had stage fright.

I think that's a bit rich actually. If you didn't want to know the result then don't log onto coolrunnings until you've watched it. It's not like they've been talking about it on TV either, should we call the stations and get them to stop mentioning the winners. I think it is good having information about a thread in the subject of the thread.

And back to the main theme, well done to Ben and Lara on their victories. The mens finish was very exciting. Congrats also to Sean, I know I haven't run as well since I was last training with him, and to Fossil for advertising his business whilst running next to Lara :D

Congratulations to Benny and Lara. Worthy champions. Very talented runners and polite, humble people as well. I hope there is more success to come.

As for Long Arms, he is everything a coach should be and more. He spends his life developing these runners into champions but also has the time and energy to put into plodders like me. Congratulations mate on a job well done.  :D

It's no big deal and didn't affect me at all, but it's normally been a common practice over here to just include 'names' inside the thread itself.  One can selectively avoid the news, but there's other items on CR that members like to read un-related to C2S - this thread is a bit hard to avoid on the front page.  The repeat telecast on OneHD may have been watched by some who'd been able to avoid news items till then

Do you guys realise I was given an opportunity to get into the commentary box with 2 great, well trained and experienced commentators.  I do not appreciate you abusing me on a thread such as this.  Its not fair.  I gave it a try and fair enough I may not have been up to the task but I have no experience, I am a mother, never intended on being or becoming a commentator and I tried.... more than what you guys would of done.  Hold your opinions to yourself.  There is more to life than analysing a girl who was there only to have a go...and to say something positive, I actually picked the winner but you probably didn't notice that because you were too busy saying how crap I was.
I appologise but its all over now and you probably wont hear me again so please try and be a bit nice.

Susie,

Ask these slackers if they would like race till the death?!? :D

For what its worth, I watched most of the coverage and I didnt see a problem (and Im not just saying that because you have posted here).  I have spoken on live television quite a few times, normally straight after games of Rugby, and its pretty daunting stuff.

You may not have been as good as 'Sir Bruce', but you were certainly better than Alicia Molik back at the Aussie Tennis Open - and I am sure she was getting paid a bucketload!

I didn't even watch it, but my non-running 20yr old son told me as I returned from my long run that SusieP did the commentary "on some running show", so you must have made some sort of impression (ed: even for him to watch it !). :D

Susie, I was thrilled to see you in the coverage this year!  We haven't had the chance to see you on the screen for a while - and to have one of our best distance runners and current record-holders involved was great from an armchair perspective.

No complaints regarding the coverage from me.  Brad was doing a relatively good job, Mona's crosses were good, although not perhaps as gob-smacking as the year he was keeping up the chatter while still taking it to the Kenyans, and your input was great when it was called upon (good pick by the way)

Love it!

One of the rare occasions when someone says something on an internet forum that they wouldn't dare say to that person's face, said person reads it, logs on and gives them a bollocking. :D

Susie, good to have you on the box. Your presence helped to address the gender imbalance of the coverage. Don't be afraid to take up the offer next year.

Hi Susie,

trouble with these forums is you get some guys who have run a few races/ultras and they think they have the right to lordy over everyone.

I thought your expert opinion could have been better used by the "well trained and experienced commentators". I would much rather hear more commentry from people like you than a professional commentator who just states the bleeding obvious all the time. Just watching your pre-race interview on Runners Tribe it is clear you are still well plugged into the running scene and bring a unique perspective to the race as the course record holder.

Dont give it away just because of a couple of insensitive comments on Coolrunning.

Glad you still view our site.

I think another thing people fail to realise was Susie & co were located at the start. They then have to commentate to what is on the screen. David Culbert still struggles at times and he has been doing it for years.

Having a "cheat sheet" close at hand also helps.  Bruce McEveny reseaches as much as he can about whatever sport he is going to call. He then has that material close at hand in a format he understands.

Practising before the big event would also help. I remember a famous race caller saying that he would turn down the sound of horse races on the TV and call the races in his living room. Hope Channel Ten gives you another go and gives you some helpful guide / pointers.

Thank you to those who have just posted.  Thanks for your support.

For what its worth, I wasn't on the payroll (just like when I won and broke the record in 01- I had to line up in the bus line that year and catch the bus back to the hotel just like everyone else and got nothing for winning it except the wonderful feeling of being the first female across the line (oh and a trophy)- and I have no complaints about that) - I was also told that I would only be there to add a few comments from a past winners perspective not to state facts and figures and go into details - that was Brad and Daves job.
Also, you are correct thomo, we were sitting in a little van at the start watching the same coverage as all those at home.  I am disappointed every year that we don't get to see more of the women out there but rather than knocking the broadcast, maybe we got to think of an interesting way so the cameras can locate the top females and put it to channel 10.  I'd love to get out there and try and help - do "a mona's" running with the mic, or get on a push bike or just find a way to promote the women in the CTS.
Anyway enough of my comments now.  I can say it was a great job by both Ben and Lara and wonderful to see Sean getting both the winners!  They were both wonderful to watch.

Susie, I am sorry you feel that way, but this is a forum about the run and I would be the first to admit that you were a great runner and can most likely kick the butt of me and most of the people who read these forums, however I do not shy away from my comments.

I am very passionate about running but I did not like your commentary. Other than turn off the TV I did not have much option but to listen.

I would no doubt have done a worse job, but I was not asked.

I have just read your latest comments Susie and I agree that the broadcast would be much better served if there was better coverage of the Womens race. For many people the identity of the top 3 women was not known until this morning and the coverage is very poor in most years.

I watched the race on ONE and the best part this year was that anytime something happened in the race it was not during an ad break.

Also apart from the first 4 across the line plus Lara there was no coverage of the other 79+ thousand, which apparently what the race is all about!

Hi Susie,  I thought your commentary was pretty good.  You picked Ben St Lawrence as looking the strongest of the three leaders from way out!

I was dissapointed that more of the finishers at least the first three ladies could have been shown, and some more of the competitors in the race.

I reckon all the ladies  placegetters are definatley worth more TV coverage, they are, educated, intelligent, articulate, lovely and super fast.

Always great to watch it on TV, with the guest commentator being no better or worse than any other guest commentator that is/was an elite athlete.

I would have preferred to have been told each kilometre post time for the front group, to see how these runners pace this exceedingly varying course.

But at the end of the day, how good is Mona's race record of 40:03. He would have beaten these guys by around 350m.

Is there anyone of the current crop that comes anywhere near this great runner?

I think you are missing the point.

You are welcome to your opinion but the manner in which you expressed your criticism was impolite, crass and insensitive.

If you had just started coaching an athlete who you considered showed little promise, would you tell them "You are great nurse, but as a runner you get a thumbs down, you are crap."?

Would you have said the same words to Susie if you had seen her at Bondi after the race?

I am sure a number of them can attest to that, I have also told it to many seasoned athletes, many of they have become better runners because of it.

I would be insincere if I said to my athletes" oh that was really good, well done" when in fact the performance was not. They rely on me to be honest with them, not tell them what they want to hear.

Back on Topic.......

Susie well done on picking Ben to win.

HillsAths1, sometimes if you don't have anything positive to say it is best to say nothing!

Again please see comments above.

When a footy team plays badly would you prefer that the newspapers reported that the team was playing great and had the crowd in raptures? Or would you prefer the truth?(I am willing to concede what one persons truth may be different from anothers).

I have to agree with Susie on the coverage of the womens race. Generally its pretty slack and with the second placed runner only 60 sec behind, it wouldn't be too hard to find her.
Also it would be good to see an ex female runner miked up and out there running on the course as well to give a different perspective. Always enjoy listening to monners having a chat while he's out there and part of the race. Although he was probably hoping that they didn't switch to him as he 's working to get up heartbreak hill. :D

Haven't posted for a while. This discussion prompted me to watch a re-run of the coverage which I missed.

Firstly congrats to both winners, as the title of thread suggests. It was actually not hard to see early on that they were the two running the most under control.

However these are my thoughts on the thread as it has evolved.

HillsAths (or anyone else) is entitled to be critical just as when we go to a restaurant and say the food isn't good (or a newspaper critic doing that), despite others thinking it was good. Our expectations are all different, as they should be.
But it appears that on this forum, we can criticise any product, service or person , so long as they are not CRs too. People were quite prepared to critricise the commentary until the moment the commentator posted. Now she is a CR and hey "say it to her face or shut up".
I have seen many instances of that on this forum in the short time.

In terms of the commentary and Susie's performance however, I have a different view. I think Susie's input was ok, she did what she was there for, and she can only have benefited from the experience.
I hope she is not serious when she said it will be the last time.
I am not sure what 'material' people expected her to have. Her commentary was from the view of a previous winner and the contributions were appropriate. She was not there to elaborate of the technicalities or rattle off statistics.
As a veteran commentator I expected more from Dave Culbert though and was suprised by Brad McEwen's good knowledge. Certainly better than that funny weatherman.

Susie, I hope Ch 10 invite you back, after all they are the only critics you should pay attention to.
