im am 46 and an occassional runner. i did several HMs and a marathon in 2008 but not much since. I also play football and broke some ribs earlier in the year so decided tio build up my running. On an 18km run I foolishly decided to use the beach at about 12km and instantly locked up the muscles in my calf. and ahd to walk home. I have never had any sports injury except for one hamstring tear about 30 years ago and a couple of groin strains playing soccer. I rested for a few weeks and the calf was ok. I did a 9k run and felt ok except for a bit of pain in the upper thigh on the same leg (like a deadleg) but nothing severe.

About a week later I spontanously felt a strain behind my knee (same leg) and since then have had intermittent muscular pain in my knee, then hamstring, then calf and occassionlly ankle. I have occasional stiff lower back and thought it could be related but nothing since. After resting for a further 3-4 weeks I did a long walk and the thigh locked up similar to the calf. Not really painful, not really cramp, but a dull pain like a warning I will injur myself if I do anything. I have not done anything strenuous for a further 2-3 weeks but still feel the same symptoms on walking or even sitting sometimes. Sometimes in the calf, sometimes hammy, sometimes back of knee.  It doesnt seem like rest is making a difefrence and it isnt severe, but I know I cant run so its very frustrating. If it was in one place it would make more sense.

I am going to a physio for the first time ever this week, but wondered if anyone had any thoughts????

The physio will help enormously. Just do what he/she says. Sorry not to be more helpful but this has happened to me (calf only though) and a session with the physio which included some dry needling sorted it out in a flash. I was right to run the next day + 1. I am 43 with a similar running history to yours; 2 marathons and a few halfs. Good luck with it!

Howdy, I have had tight painful muscles of late. Magnessium deficiency as it turns out. Feels a bit like a cramp but wont go away. 4 days on magnesium powder called muscle ressucitation & I am back in training. Feeling ok. Just a thought. Something to consider

Ahh yes, dry needling. Think acupuncture. Helps release knotted muscles I think.

I can't relate to your symptoms exactly, but the story sounds similar - no issues for years until one day you push your body 'over the edge'. For me it was after two marathons (and i think a poor 'recovery' strategy after the 2nd). I now feel like I'm in a continuous maintenance mode, where different niggles come and go - and I need to pay attention to make sure the don't get worse than 'niggles'. Between back, hips, calves, running style & technique I've learnt a lot from the money I've paid my physio - I'm definitely running better for it!

Sometimes I wish for the days when I just ran when I wanted to and didn't ever have an injury. But then, I didn't run more than 30mins at a time back then. And when I think about the years of crappy posture and bad running style that I've dished out to my body, it kinda makes sense that I need some maintenance if I still expect it to perform!

So I agree with do what the physio says, and try a different one if you don't think they're getting to your real problem. They're not all the same in the way they treat you - I definitely prefer someone who will take a whole body approach, not just treat the bit that hurts.

Good luck :-)
virtualkerri.

Hi Jimmy

Any brand names you can give here?

I'd love to try it as I have something very similar.

The Health Shop I went to this morning here didn't seem to have any idea about such a product.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Many thanks

Hey Slacko,
Herbs of Gold, Muscle rescusitation. Sporty's Health online have it. 2 weeks ago I seized badly. Today I did the toughest 10k I have ever done & I am sore but feeling great. Magnessium deficiency was new to me but seems it is what I had. This stuff seems to have done the job. I mixed up a full serve & sipped it during the day. Apparently it is better absorbed if consumed in small doses. Good luck.
