Hi there Ive been training well for 1st Melbourne Marathon but got injury 10 days ago to tibialis anterior muscle in shin. slowly getting better but havent run since. What id like to know is this - if i am out of action for say 2 or 3 weeks is my fitness going to be up the creek and i have to pull out. There may be only 3 weeks left before race before i can run again. was doing 32km runs before injury. Can i regain my conditioning in 3 weeks to finish the race? Will be shattered if i have to pull out.....

I don't know anything about your injury - however if you could cross train to maintain some fitness it would be beneficial. Can you cycle in the meantime? Many marathon tapers are 2-3 weeks long and while volume and intensity of this period is reduced, fitness is not lost.
If training has been good up to this point, then you should draw some confidence from that. You've gone over 30+km at least once which is more than some other people who will be at the start line! Personally, if it were me and this was a HUGE goal I'd still show up - however with revised expectations. However if there are other marathons nearby in the next 2 or 3 months, perhaps you could work diligently on the injury and push the timeframe back a bit.
Either way, be sure to have the injury healed fully before attempting the marathon or you might pay the price.

thanks for your advice! The injury is not severe but has been enough to keep me from running, but has felt good the last 2 days. If it still feels ok in a couple of days will try a run and see how it feels. Yes MM is a big goal for me! 1st marathon and done lots of training, but hear what you say about paying the price of running injured.
Matt
