I did sub 55 on chip time at C2S this year so I should be ok for next years race.

The funny thing is that you need a sub 56 C2S to get a preferred start in the SMH 1/2 or a sub 85 in the previous year but then it doesn't work the other way
I'd rather qualify by getting the sub 55 anyway.

BUT
I also know someone got in to preferred with a 39:06 10km race, so I think they're just sticking to very basic maths. Works for me though as I just missed the cutoff this year with 55:09, having run out of the green group and hence around 10,000 people!
Good luck

I'm keen to see if I can get to qualify for a preferred start from the red group. I think that would be a respectable achievement at age 48. I managed 58:06 last year.

Different sized preferred groups, so different hurdles to get in.

Yes, qualifying from the masses is the most satisfying. Why not at 48? There are a few of us hanging in there!

Yep get there early (7ish) for Red and won't make much difference at the start. Main attraction for me of getting into preferred is so I can sleep in an extra hour AND not be crushed, have to risk last minute toilet breaks etc etc!!

More seriously, does that mean that there is a certain time I could use from a Half or 10k (do Striders count?) to get into the SH1 section? If so, do you know what time? Or, can you just select that category (without a particular qualifying time) when you register?
Would a sub 40 10k get you into full preferred? Again, would a Striders time count?
Cheers, Scott

All the Striders 10k certainly count, as do the SMC 10k - basically any "certified" course will do the job.
In the past, any result (on a certified course) that demonstrated (preferably more than once) that you will go comfortably in the 60's would get you into the pack right behind the preferreds. Tick the box for you there. To get a preferred requires a 35.xx for blokes, and sub 40 for the girls (sub 80 half also works). However, I have to qualify everything with "there is a new management team, so rules may change".
So ,you have until the SMH Half in May to get your qualifiers together - entries open right after the half and you want to get your entry in asap as most can now enter online with auto qualifiers (from previous C2S/SMH Half/Homebush 10k) so groups will fill pretty quickly. That is 4 Striders 10ks, 3 SMC 10ks, and the SMH Half... plenty more options about!
cheers
Stephen
