This summer the Blue Mountains will host a new series of short distance offroad triathlons- the Dirty Tri series. Based out of Lawson Pool, a handicap swim previews a ride over the hilly firetrails of North Lawson and then a gnarly run on one of the oldest walking trails in the Blue Mountains. Triathletes will make six creek crossings and pass two waterfalls on the bike and run.

There will be six Dirty Triathlons over the summer of 2010-11, on the first and third Wednesdays of December, January and February. Registrations open at 5pm for a 6.15pm sharp start, with athletes expected to take from an hour to 90 minutes to complete the course. Expect a little hike-a-bike on the ride course and getting muddy on the run, followed by a friendly BBQ dinner.

This series is brought to you by the former director of the WildEndurance 100, NSW Mountain Running Championship and current President of the Running Wild trail run series. The pool and trails of Lawson are some of the best kept secrets of the Blue Mountains. As the "Healthy Parks, Healthy People" program of the National Parks and Wildlife Service emphasises, the Blue Mountains has a lot more to offer than the standard tourist trails- in this case, a 40 minute drive from busy Penrith.

The attached flyer contains essential details, and more information will shortly be available on the website www.mountainsports.com.au

If you have any questions or would like to pre register - please contact us on 02 4757 4378 or info@mountainsports.com.au

See you on December 1st for a dirty evening of multisport!

Hi All,

The first Dirty Tri has been postponed. Inspecting the course this morning, the multiple creek crossings were all deep underwater with heavier rain forecast later today, so not safe. The first event will be on the 15th December. We may possibly add another race in late Feb or early March to make up for it.

See you on the 15th!

Why don't you make it a bit more interesting?  Ride into one of the forbidden dams, have a swim and then run back...

Thanks to Sean, Mel and their band of helpers. This was my first tri and my worries about the swim should have been directed at the ride !! That is a tough leg. I am looking forward to the next one.

Hi All,

Please find attached results from the first Dirty Triathlon at Lawson.

What a fantastic evening. The pool was quite a sight with 40+ swimmers splashing up and down the lanes, the cursing at the end of the ride leg was enlightening and the delight at the end of the run leg was well worth the wait!

We had a good mix of serious competitors and first timers racing, including several families, which is just what we hoped for. There were some people who had not swum for 10 years, some who had bought mountains bikes for the event and others who were well prepared and trained...  Most competitors were locals but we had some from the eastern suburbs of Sydney and from Bathurst to race as well! Thanks to all who came along to support the event- we really appreciated seeing you all.

After adjusting for handicaps, Ben Artup won the overall title in a time of 56m32s, and first female was Jo Boyd in 1hr14m32s.

For those of you who inquired - the young fellow who dismounted his bike suddenly is bruised and battered but in good spirits and keen to have another go. I have a feeling he will crack this race right open at some stage in the series....

Special mention to the Panthers Tri Club who provided us with the bike racks for the event. Panthers also have a series of club races over summer and these can be found at http://www.pantherstriclub.com.au/

As a result of the December 1st race being washed out, we will add another race in early March to keep it a six race series. In the meantime, enjoy your Christmas cheer... but not too much, as the next race is on January 5!

Hi All,

Please find attached results from Race 2 of the Dirty Triathlon Series at Lawson.

The weather gods were bored on race day- from being sunny and humid in the morning as the course was being marked, the day turned cloudy later on, to steady rain just as the race got underway with a little storm activity thrown in, yet by the time the race was over for most, the rain had stopped. Highlight of the evening for the organisers was the amount of mud that covered each and every competitor at the end of the race, it would have been easier to have just rolled in the dirt at the start and be done with it.

Several competitors from December had been talking up their subsequent training on the course, but conditions on the night didn't lend
themselves to fast times. Of eighteen repeat offenders from the prior race, seven were faster than last time, with Stephen Tomczyk improving by six minutes from three weeks ago. Stephen, you could open a side business selling whatever you have for breakfast.

The winning times were also quicker than last time, with both first and second place- Glenbrook's Paul Robertson and Springwood's Phillip Bardsley-Smith- beating the old course record. After the two of them left the water together, Phillip's mountain biking strength had him finshing the ride a minute ahead. Paul had better running legs however, passing Phillip and finishing in 55 minutes 19 seconds.
Blaxland triathlete Andrea Oracki was first woman in a new course record of 1.12.06, a minute ahead of December winner Jo Boyd who
improved on her previous time but was unlucky to encounter a skillful rival. Andrea also beat her chivalrous partner Rodney Forrest by six minutes.

Domestic rivalry was a theme of the evening with father and son Neil and Ryan Davies also competing, Ryan having a stellar race to come third overall and Neil tenth. Harry Aubrey and mother Carolyn returned, Harry stayed on his bike this time to finish eight minutes
ahead of his mum, plus Jenyne Debeck and Renee Ferris competing as a mother- daughter relay team.

Local bike shops would have done good trade today repairing broken chains, damaged tires and worn brake pads but happily there were no spills of note. A quick thanks to the dedicated family and friends who turned up to spectate and cheer on their loved ones- you really add to the atmosphere of proceedings.

Special mention to the Panthers Tri Club who provided us with the bike racks for the event. Panthers also have a series of club races over summer and these can be found at http://www.pantherstriclub.com.au

See you on January 19th!

Race 3 of this series last night was my 1st. It was Tops with a capital T. I highly recommend it to anyone who can get to Lawson in time for a triathlon with a difference. Has to be one of the best run legs going round. Just bring your climbing legs with you.

3rd race again very well run by Sean and crew. I had a shocker (flat tyre) but will make it up at the 4th race.

Redemption was the theme of the third race in the Dirty Triathlon series as the male and female second place competitors from Race 2 stepped up to win with new course records. There were also quite a few new personal best times including local Neil Davies who took the opportunity to celebrate his 51st birthday in style with a 3min PB.

Phillip Bardsley-Smith from Chemmart in Winmalee was first swimmer out of the pool, first to finish the mountain bike leg, and first to complete the run to win in 52m25s a personal improvement of 4 minutes. Junior, Ryan Davies was determined to elude the hour in his second race and his efforts in training bought him over the finish line in a fast 54m59s, two and a half minutes ahead of Mt Riverview endurance athlete Ben Berriman, who seemed to be the only triathlete to finish without a spot of dirt or mud on him. One wonders if he noticed this was called the "Dirty" Tri....

Among the ladies, Race 1 winner Jo Boyds strong bike leg was enough to hold off the fast runs of Woodford's Joanne Brischetto and 17 year old Jodie Knutsen. Jo's final time of 1.10.42 is a new ladies course record showing the ride leg is where some valuable time can be gained.

Biggest improvement went to the youngest competitor in the race, Callum Jessusek, who was over 23 minutes quicker than his first attempt, his dad Mark admitting he had to work hard to keep up with his son on the run leg.

With three races complete, Miles Morrison's method of casually taking his time in transition after the swim, storming the bike leg and then shuffling the run has put him on top of the standings with an accumulated Time of 3.14.24 just ahead of Lawson resident Gourdan Sebastian's 3.17.42.

The series is has a great local community feel about it- there are plenty of triathlon first timers coming along with the experienced athletes. It is really encouraging to see so many people opt to get off the couch for something which is hard, but definitely doable and hopefully fun as well. And it is not only the public who are supporting the event - to date Blue Mountains Leisure Centres, sportswear giant 2XU, Sparta PT, Get Shirty, National Parks and Wildlife Service and Panthers Tri Club have all thrown their support behind the series, it is essential to have this great support and we really appreciate it.

Next event will have a treat for spectators with the "Full of Beans" coffee van catering well priced fresh Morgans Coffee as well as a free sausage sizzle after the event. "We have been encouraged by the many locals who come out to watch and cheer and would like more people to see what the event is all about so please encourage anyone you know who may be interested to come and have a free sausage sizzle on Feb 2nd and see what The Dirty Tri Series is all about...

For people wanting to have a go a practice on the course, maps can be found at www.mountainsports.com.au . Next event is 2nd February starting at 6.15pm.

New Website for Dirty Triathlon!! The new site for the Dirty Triathlon series is go! - Here you can check out the Series Leaderboard, the Race Results and also the Collated Results so you can see how your races compare. http://www.mountains...lon/?page_id=58

Happy training.
