No problems at all - any excuse to be out of the trail
Here’s the first 10km – it covers about 90% of the terrain encountered in the Coastal Classic – main thing missing is the cliff tops. As with a good book, it takes much longer to produce a short video than a long once, so apologies for the length – I erred on the side of showing more of the track than less and focussed on getting the video out there rather than aim for editing perfection.
It was the first time I did an extended run with the GoPro pole-mounted, and I found it pretty tough going. Losing one arm to the camera really made climbs harder, and I ended up walking a few of the stairs as can be seen in the video. Time for the 29km through to the end of Jibon was around 4 hours.
About 5 different folks asked along the way if I was Google Earth. A few girls seemed weary that I was some perverted trail upskirter
I added some self-footage so everyone can see what I look like and say g’day before or after the race. Linda and me will be around somewhere with a video camera.

Thanks for the video Nick - other than the trenches it didn't look as bad as I was expecting from earlier reviews of the condition of the track. Definitely won't be running (walking?!) a lot it at any great pace but it seems like it should be manageable. I imagine those trenches should be pretty churned up by the time a few hundred runners have gone thru' them tho

Great video Nick, i'll buy you a beer after the race, Max Adventure should put you on the payroll. The course looks like great fun, can't wait to get out there and smash myself.

Tucks 2:27ish marathon is your road man, also convincingly won Willy to Billy. I'd be happy to give a perspective from a sprinter though, might give your hardcore trail mates a laugh to have a precious track runner out roughing it and suffering accordingly.

Awesome - I'll need Linda (my wonderful wife and chief videographer) at the finish to catch both of you speedsters
The final installment of the track conditions video is now up - nothing hugely different from the first 10km - a bit more rock, and a bit better running.
A picked up my Talon 190s for the race yesterday - breaking them in on the tracks around Jervis Bay this weekend, and really looking forward to running the CC in them.

thanks for the video! great preview for those of us who haven't run it before. That last 2km in soft sand is a cruel way to finish

The tree roots partially submerged in this section are deadly - I took my biggest spill of the year in this section last year - hyper-extended my thumb of landing and couldn't open a jar properly for 3 months. It would be an interesting to stat to see how many finish without a spill...

I think you have frightened a lot of people going by the late ticket off-loads.
Regarding people finishing without a spill.
I was out today on the Waterfall firetrails. Running up a slight hill I did a great stack. Had only ran 1km.
Was testing out using a handheld and I won't be using it in the Coastal Classic. Bloodied my knuckles & fingers on the left hand that I was gripping the handheld. Hurt my left arm and leg also.
Did continue running after dusting myself off & leaving handheld off trail, did pick it up on way back.
I was wearing two watches, a timex 150 lap ironman and a garmin 610.
Good news, both watches survived unscathed.

One time i fell over a root on a steep down hill and ended up head first in a ditch lol.. because of the angle it took me a bit to right myself lol..i ended up having to do some kind of breaststroke manovere lol...
No doubt i will be muddy and bloody at the end of CC.. just hoping i shake this flu so i can get to the start!!!

Question for those who did it last year - is it relatively easy for spectators to drive to Garie/Wattamolla to watch the runners go past? Or is there congestion similar to 6 Foot Track? Would appreciate some insight as I don't know the roads around there very well.
Thanks

I tuned out of this thread some weeks back, thinking I had missed the race. It isn't in the calendar for NSW, either.

Pardon?
It wasn't held twice this year. Original June date was cancelled/postponed due to flooding on the track, Sept date is the re-scheduled date which is why people are more active on the thread over the past couple of weeks.

Wollemi - apologies for the confusion. The race was postponed in June and is now on this weekend. Given that I have been looking forward to running it since I entered in February, I'm now quite excited. Hence I feel that (for me at least), there has been quite a long build-up.
This thread has been pretty active over the last few weeks with a lot of very helpful comments / track reports / etc. posted.
I'm still wondering about the ease of spectating at Garie / Wattamolla, but given the number of people who appear to be pulling out, maybe congestion won't be an issue. Tiger, sorry to hear you're joining those ranks.

Just as a backup, anybody else selling an entry in case Gary's is already gone? Thanks heaps.
And NickW - killer footage. Am going to try doing a few things with a Contour Cam soon and I'd love to get some advice on how to make it not look like Call of Duty on a dialup connection. Shall PM you.

BTW if you do get wet feet at Garie beach (tidal runoff) or on the northern escarpment due to rain runoff, be very careful on the metal grates that begin just north of the Garie north escarpment. If your feet are wet and/or muddy then the grates can be very slippery, especially for the first few meters. Make sure you land on your forefoot rather than your heel when you hit the grates. Face-planting on metal grates can spoil your day.
BTW2 I'd be curious as to the criteria in which the decision was made to go ahead with the race on Sat.. Given that IMHO the track is in worse condition than what it was on the original 2011 race date in June when several of us did actually run the course on a beautiful sunny day. It's not just an academic curiosity but it would useful for 2012 and subsequent years to know whether we will be going through the same drama and uncertainty as we have gone through in 2011. CC is not an easy course to train for. Arguably it is more difficult to prepare for than a marathon given the extreme and changing nature of the terrain. Just curious, but I'm guessing we will never really know the behind-the-scenes stuff.

If you want to jump in some cool shoes, follow the lead of Nick and get your hands on some Inov8 Talons. Late notice I know, but you might be able to pick up a pair in the city. Great combo of flats style and killer grip/traction. Weight wont be an issue for you as the 190s are as the name suggests 190gms. They will be the ideal shoe for the conditions.
