Hi Everyone:

I moved here from Canada a few months back and I'm currently living in Meadowbank in the Sydney area.  I don't have a car (the thought of driving on the "other" side of the road gives me panic attacks - looking the right way while crossing the street is enough of a challenge), so I was wondering if anyone knew of a running group either in Meadowbank or somewhere nearby that I could travel to by train?

I've been running for a couple of years on and off (I'm pretty slow and of course running in the winter in northern Ontario really isn't much of an option), but I'm just now starting to train more seriously (I'd like to do the City to Surf in 2011).  I figure a group would help keep me motivated!

Any advice would be very much appreciated!  Cheers!  :)

Hi Canuck, groups nearby include, Ryde Athletic Club, Striders who race at Homebush sometimes(check their website for training details). Not sure of too many others.

Welcome to Australia.

Hi Canuck,

In my opinion you have some of the best running in Sydney on your doorstep.

Head down to the ferry wharf, go left. The bike path is a pretty nice run, and if you take it all the way to the Silverwater bridge, cross the bridge and you are into Sydney Olympic Park - a 45K network of bike paths.

Alternatively, go right at the wharf and cross the river at the next bridge (Homebush Bay Drive). This puts you into Concord, and you can run the Foreshore Track, which is a beautiful trail run in the middle of Sydney.

Good luck with it!

Thanks for this!  Yes, the paths around here are very nice - I'll certainly give those routes you suggested a try!

Thanks again,

Laura

You could check out Woodstock Runners, based just a few stations down the train line at Burwood.

There are toilets near the northern side of Ryde Bridge and a bubbler. I love running along the cycle way always lots to look at. You can go quite along way along the bike path, I can't tell you how far as I missed the bike sign last time at Putney.

I work at Rhodes and love running across the railway bridge and along the water then across Ryde road bridge, approx 5km from Rhodes shopping centre.

I too have run thru Bicentennial park, you can always go near the stadium and see if you can run along the blue line that marked the marathon route for the Olympics (when I ran the Sydney marathon this year I loved running on it gave me a real thrill)

Sorry I don't know of any groups near you

Hi Canuck188

Have you found a running group? I just moved to Meadowbank and I am looking for someone to run together with 2-3 times a week, while I get ready for my first Marathon here in Sydney in September. If you are interested maybe we could find out to do some kilometers together? Otherwise I would really like to know where you found a running group. I need some motivation and someone who can pace me a little bit ;)

Meadowbank is a great area to run in. Scenic, plenty of paths and cycleways, and plenty of other walkers, runners and cyclists around.

If you want flat runs, then run along the cycleways on the Parramatta River. If you want to run hills, there are plenty of those as well, steep or gentle, in Meadowbank, West Ryde and Eastwood/Epping. Olympic Park is just around the corner and there are plenty of places to run around there too. Long runs can therefore snake along the Parramatta River to silverwater bridge, cross over the bridge and then run back towards Rhodes through Olympic Park on the other side of the river.

Just wander around on your feet and see. :-)
