Am having an issue with replying using a few of the buttons - and it's a bit odd as it's only showing up on Firefox (version 3.6) and not Chrome, Safari or IE8 (all on PC).

Basically, if I go to reply to a particular post and use either the Quote, or Reply buttons on that post, the relevant section to reply, with quoted text appears, but I'm simply not able to click in it and type.  No cursor appears, even when I put the mouse pointer over the block and click.  I'm able to highlight the quoted text, but can not 'cut' it as one would if cutting and pasting.

Same thing happens if I use the Add Reply button.  If I click New Topic, I can enter a title and topic description, but the same issue occurs with the text box.  Looking more closely, it appears the Bold, Italics and Underline icons are selected, and the Paste button highlights in the toolbar, but does not appear in a right click menu if clicked when over the text box.

The only way I can reply is via Fast Reply.  It also appears the Edit function is working correctly.

I'm using Firefox 3.5.7 on a Mac and no problem. Any other Firefox 3.6 users out there?

I'm on FF3.6 on a mac - no issues I've noticed with either reply, or fast reply. Am on FF3.6 at work, haven't noticed anything either but I don't do as many posts from there.

Hey Vat,

Apparently it's an issue with Ipb and Mozilla 3.6. According to this thread on dtv forums it's to do with rich text editing. I've just tried it out and it seems to be the case. Go into "My Controls" then on the left select board settings. Down the bottom of the screen you can select between "Rich Text Editing" or "Standard Editing". Select standard and it will work. I guess Mozilla will have to release a fix for it sometime soon.

Please be aware that the forums, blogs, PM and wiki functions will all be offline for a while next Saturday night, 29th January.

We have a number of parties to co-ordinate for this, and it will happen some time after midnight. Three different time zones.
  • CoolRunning staff, who have to re-build the forums after the upgrade
  • The software provider (inVision), who will perform the actual upgrade
  • The facilities management where our server is located (backups and possible (fingers crossed not) restores).

As a forum user, there are a few things you should be aware of:
  • The actual upgrade should take only about an hour, but the outage could be more than that. It will take quite a few hours to re-build all the database indices.
  • This forum has over 630,000 posts, a large number by any measure. We've printed them all out, but typing them back in will take us a while.
  • The new version of the forum has changed the way PM's work, and while we are able to preserve the contents of the existing PM's, they cannot be continued after conversion. They'll show as "locked" to members. They can be read and their content copied to a new PM, but they cannot be continued.

Come Sunday morning, the forum will look different, until we're able to restore the CoolRunning "look and feel". This is known as the 'skin', but old skins are not supported. We have to make a new one, although it's not a big deal. If the forum is too slow while the indices are being re-build, it will be turned off.

Full functionality will be restored by when_it_is_finished o'clock.

If you have any questions about this, please ask in this thread rather than emailing CoolRunning.

Thanks so much for your efforts and expertise. It sounds very much like my idea of a Saturday night in hell.

I hate doing forum upgrades, especially tracking down the error when it goes wrong.

Good luck.

Why upgrade?
In general, its always a good idea to keep up on the latest version of software - its more secure, and its supported by the vendor if we have issues (current version is not). There have been a number of issues with the blogs that are fixed in the latest version and more features.

The key one is better support for those people that want to read and post to CR from iphone & other smartphones.

Also, we are going to change the way we do ads on the site, not more of them but a simpler way for our advertisers to be self-sufficient to remove the workload from the admins. The new software supports this. Umm, I think you can also link your CR account to your facebook account, but I am not an expert in that.

Also, the "wiki" part of CR has had a number of issues linking to CR accounts, but the new version of the software will be better integrated so we may retire that use of wikimedia and use the section in-built into the forum software.

Lots of reasons when you think about it .... will become clearer in due course.
(much thanks to Bellthorpe for helping us all out)

I predict that this will coincide with a sudden spike of distracted-runner related accidents similar to the “woman in the shopping centre fountain” video that recently went viral.

Runners running into traffic, rivers, other runners, walls, etc whilst browsing the CR forums.

Good luck with the upgrade. Wish I could just upgrade my internal software to “Run faster 2.0”….  :)

The forums came back up just two minutes ago.

Please expect them to be very slow while the indices are being re-built. And it will be a while before we have the 'look and feel' more like CoolRunning.

Thanks for your patience all!

The forums are back on, but there are a number of issues, like homepage http://www.coolrunning.com.au is not working right.
I suspect a bunch of things will be found, please let us know here.
In some cases, it is working, but the option you are looking for has been moved.

Some tips:
1) at the moment we are still re-indexing all our posts so they can be searched - this is causing the forum to run slow, so please be patient till approx Monday morning (we have a lot of posts!)

2) the link for today's active topics is http://www.coolrunni...earch&do=active

Looks good.  One thing I have noticed is that if you put an internet link in the body of a post, much more difficult to spot it, unless you hover the curser over it.  I think before they were bold to make them more prominent.

Keep up the great work.

Pretty sure this is the default 'skin' for the forum software. Nothing wrong with default though.

Are the quoted posts going to be fixed? At the moment when I quote someone I can see the html code.

Thanks for all the hard work - it must have been (still is) a mammoth task.

Not sure if it's still being updated, but I can't get into the 'blogs' when I try it says I don't have the correct access?  I'll check back tomorrow and see how it goes then.

@pbig We will tweak the skin, but that's a pretty low priority

@redbackrun Wiki is a high priority, as the entire 'front page' and most of the non-forum content is wiki based

@rodthehornet As mentioned above, skinning is a low priority, but thanks for mentioning 'visited links', that's at the top of the skin list

@serena Thanks much

@greydove Thanks for thanks, but hey, priorities. Kevin went in his fatass this morning, and I raced track this afternoon. The sun still rose, therefore we ran.

@Perseus I can't see the problem you describe. Appreciate if you could elaborate.

@Gadfly Blogs are still being indexed, but there might be another problem with permissions. Looking at that.

@all Thanks for your patience and the feedback.

Old quoted posts have "<{POST_SNAPBACK}>"

Without the quote box/frame (in older posts) it's not always obvious where a quote ends and new post begins e.g. posts in this thread

I also noticed earlier that a hyperlink that was within a quote was shown as code i.e. <a href=http://..../a>

Also, have a look at seris' interests on the left hand side.

Overall pretty impressive how quickly you've upgraded.

Does the indexing affect the "View new posts since last visited" function?  I can't see it anywhere yet.  I'll go off today's active posts for now.

edit:  Sorry.  I think I found it as "New Content" which only showed up once I marked the boards as read for the first time.

I noticed people's interests are listed under their name in their posts. Takes a lot of space, depending on how much a person has revealed. An example someone like Brick has a long list of interests. This might need to revisted when things settle down

The indexing function is taking much longer than expected.

I've turned off a number of functions overnight, including search, show users/other functions. This will speed up the indexing, it would be good to have it all finished by Monday morning. The forums are still active.

Full functionality will be restored in the morning. After the day's run.

Perseus, "POST_SNAPBACK" should disappear when all posts have been re-indexed. That's a slow process (> 630,000 posts) , and is happening right now.

I believe the blog issue is fixed. Feedback needed, thanks.

All fixed from this end - many thanks for chasing this up.

Looks great.

just one question (I'm sure it's simple to answer but I'm thick)...how do I see all the forum since my last visit, rather than just the updates?

cheers

Many thanks for all the hard work Bellthorpe and co.

Is there more to do with PMs ?  I don't seem able to reply to messages in my inbox right now.
