I was most intrigued when I saw the post saying results before the race was even run

Anyway, if you do the statistics on the times over the course, it is roughly the equivalent of a 60k road race... not to be sneezed at!

Yes great run, a resord I think.
Also Warick Selby 4:55 60+ is a top time.
The top times are slow this year

Heh - except it's 'pluviometer', a reference to the rain gauge that sits atop the end of the massive climb (at the 26km mark) where you start the Black Ranges section. As you come up and crest the hill, the meter's off to the left a bit, surrounded by a wire mesh fence.

4:38, last 10kms was pretty tough and I will not prepare for a Marathon like that again, too much cross training.
Once again, brilliantly run event well done and thanks to all involved in this race.

How did everyone go ?
For myself I LOVED the mud, but I did run a much slower time than expected - I think this is the case with many runners.
Potentially lack of training in my case.
Awesome run by Anna Frost.

This was my first 6FT and I did a 5.17. I was hoping to be a little faster, but given where I ended up overall, I'm pretty chuffed. I was adamant yesterday that I'd never, ever do it again, but now I'm not so sure... If I do do it again, I'll definitely carry water with me.

Simply remarkable, and how lucky are we to have so many people who are willing to support our running endeavours in the way that they do?! No need or request for fanfare, just a passion to give as many others who are also passionate about running this amazing event, the opportunity to do so.....
Thank you so much to all involved "behind the scenes" and to all those who offered [or well-received] encouragement along the way........

For now I am looking for an angel, a runner who came to my aid in a time of need.
I hit the 'wall' rather badly with about a km to go yesterday and was in desperate need of assistance. As I lay by the side of the track a few people helped me out including one girl who gave me her drink bottle before running off.
Based on the results I can make an educated guess as to the identity of this Florence Nightingale of the running world, but can' be sure.
If this is you, please contact me (PM) so I can get the bottle back to you. (If she's not a CR reader and you know who she is please let her know that I want to get in touch)
I did make it to the finish line having taken almost 19 minutes to cover the 44th km. What a disaster. All my own fault for choosing to miss the final aid station because I told myself "not far to go, you won't need a drink now" - sometimes we learn form our mistakes and sometimes we need to be beaten about the head with a great lump of wood before the message sinks in.

A relief not to be overtaken by some, (you know who you are)..and an enjoyable run. I love running in the heat, hate the cold and usually freeze to death on the black range..that i didnt this year possibly a testament to it being warmer? / more humid than usual.
Sorry to hear it rained on tropic thunder's parade.

Congratulations to striders on teams victories in both male and female. The bmmc-RW dream lives on for another year.
Great to see one of the friendliest runners going round, Andy Lee claim a 6 foot title to go with his 2 north face wins.

SR there is no disaster, you had the guts to finish, but some consolation - after my first dry retch half way up mini i slowly but surely deteriorated until it took me approx 45mins for the last 3
I too experienced plenty of "angels", a special note to one darling who stopped. After I mumbled I was suffering badly - she thought I was cramping and gave me special anti cramp spray under my tongue - lucky she ran off before the spray's effect took hold - on my stomach!!

In terms of the outcome I surprised myself by finishing in 5:35, well below my target of 6:00. In particular I found out I'm a better power walker up hills than I realised! I fought cramps in various muscles from pluvio to the finish, but I guess that's what 6ft is all about.
I'll definitely be back.

What a blast. Another year over and already thinking about next year. Hopefully I will be able to run myself as I may have an experienced runner/RD as a manager on the day. Holding thumbs on that.
Got home safely this afternoon, after dropping Rodthehornet and his eskies full of exotic beer. That guy is on a winner taking all that unfinished beer with him every year. He made sure he took both eskies but forgot his smelly race gear in my ute.
Congrats to Andrew and Anna and of course happy to see a CR favourite MrD in 2nd and my mate John (SMC42K) get an emotional 18th.
I will send out a detailed feedback email to the entrants, but let me just make a few comments here.
Firstly I must pass on my appreciation to all the entrants and supporters for their thanks yesterday.
By and large the race went without a hitch and is almost anti climactic on the day as you constantly think you are overlooking doing something. The organisation is done and most of it is up to the runners and the volunteers. You just have to 'fight the fires' that may flare up.
To all the volunteers and the RFS,thanks ...we can't do it without you.
At the risk of omitting some I am going to mention a few names.
Firstly my better half Yoli for putting up with it and working extra hard while I was neglecting the 'day job'.
The RFS led by Rod Walker for their logistics.
Kevin Tiller for looking after the website and still a few other things and being a source of advice.
Dave Bray and Striders-support and advice.
The volunteers led by Pauline and Steve ( CR 'Barefoot').
Ben (CR hatless) for the wave guru work. The results at first glance indicate that your calculations with my discretions are getting it better and better.
Tom Silk for all his 'supply' work. If I hadn't met him briefly after last year's race I would have thought that such effeciency must be due to some auto computer. The stuff just get ordered and turn up at the right places, without much ado.
Martin (Plu) for his race pack work and and Keith (Buzz) for never spitting the dummy about not getting on and instead bringing his experience to help out.
Steve 'Action' Jackson for the sweepers who ensure that all stragglers are helped out.
Our sponsors esp the electrolyte -Fastgear/High5- and our paid service providers, Multisport Timing, Event Services International (approvals), Dr King and party (medical), St Johns and Ambulance, Ablaze Printing (bibs), Get Shirty (apparel), Activenetwork (online entry)
Supersport Images for photos.
The 'beer bettors' for bringing their great enthusiasm to the race.
Issues and ideas.
Car travel to Jenolan Caves: Seemed to be a mix between the short route and the preferred Duckmalloi route, still not enough, but noticeable in the reduced traffic around the finish area. Going in right direction.
The second bus to JC had only 10 people in it and the car parks were full with about 40 cars of disappointed people turned away. More reason to use the buses if they are provided. Do not vent your anger on the parking attendants for missing out.
The JC road out through arch gets closed for up to 60 min (around presentation time). Cars were asked to go via Duckmalloi Rd, but most refused with many irate drivers 'taking it out' on RFS. Guys, I know the rain made things worse, but I made the call to RFS not to announce when the road will be closed - because of the obvious rush that would have happenned. The road gets closed, there is an alternate route--use it.
The rain made things different for spectators and I was concerned about the clothing bags in the rain. The volunteers made their best effort to cover and close the bags. My apologies if any had damp clothes after a shower, but it would be no different at C2S. I have
had no complaints thankfully.
Race pack preparation and distribution is still a pain in the proverbial. I am leaning towards merchandise distribution direct from supplier with only handing out bibs/chips on Friday/Sat.
Attritrion rate was high yesterday- will have to analyse, but entry criteria will be tightened anyway.
Full field started...will make a submission for additional 150, and qualification will be trimmed to last 12 months pre race only (all finishers safe of course), more qualifier events benchmarked and a more streamlined entry process between guarrantee, vets and novices.
All for now...thanks for being part of the action and making it worthwhile...keep donating people.

As a first time runner in this race, my experience lived up to all that I had heard about this race. For me, crossed the line in a time that I am happy with in the bucketing rain at 5.15. My run from Caves Road to the finish was a high point, had left a bit in reserve and was able to pick up the pace even in the heavy rain. Many memories throughout the whole 45kms, but how do you top the approach to the finish line with the crowd cheering you in!!
The name on the bib is a good idea particularly for people at drinkstations and spectators. I saw a few runners who had written their names on their tops/singlets aswell, which is I thought was good for runners encouraging other runners during the race.
One last thing, congratulations to all the runners. Hope to see you next year at this iconic event.

Hey Colin - awesome day as always.
One quick (admittedly selfish) idea for next year. Could we reserve some spots in the bottom car-park for people with prams / wheelchairs etc? It's pretty tough getting the pram up all those stairs and taking it down the road is a tad dangerous.
Hope you manage to organise a run for yourself next year,

Pity about the rain at the end - it dampened my beer somewhat - but loved it on the run !
Colin - higher attrition rate and toughen up criteria - I hope not !
2011 95 %
2010 97 %
2008 96 %
2007 96 %
1988 97 %
1984 100 %
2011 looked pretty good to me !
With only 5 years better with minimal margin.
Its difficult enough to get in already
I have a friend who came in 4.55 who hasnt run it in 10 years
Just because they havnt qualified in the last year doesnt make them a bad risk.
Anyway - thanks for the veterans reserved spots - please look after the people who have supported this for many years.
Thanks to the RFS
Thanks to the photographers - hope your equipment didnt get wrecked in the rain
cant wait for next year !
cheers

Anyway...the stats are actually 2010 98.2%, 2011 96.3%

Again..irrelevant to the reason I am doing it, but your friend would then have done another qualifier in last 3 yrs wouldn't he?
Anyone who is half serious about the race would be training for months for it and surely capable and willing to run a qualifier.
The reason for doing it has more to do with the fact that in past the growth in demand was accomodated by increasing the limit. This is no longer happenning so we do have to do other things. 20,000 people qualify for Comrades in 12 months prior...they can do same for 6ft.

I put this on the Update thread, but I'll put it here as well.
The wave allocations seemed to work well this year. There was good separation between W1 and W2. Harder to separate W2 - 4 because there are always people like me who have a good qualifier and then have a shocker on the day...

My back up team drove straight to JC after being bussed back to the park and ride. No issues en route and parked in top car park as bottom one already full. After race I wanted to leave rather than stay for presentations as was feeling ill. The road through JC was about to be closed so we went via Duckmaloi - no issues at all - good road once you get to the top of the hill, so don't know why people would have issues doing this apart from selfishness
Last year with my family supporting including younger kids we bussed in and out. Worked very well and easy to get on bus as in bottom car park if you have young kids. The walk up to the top car park nearly finished me off post race this year. Highly recommend bus

1. Salt - read in the guide that salt would be provided so didnt carry my own. Started to cramp a bit with 10km to go, then asked for salt at one of the stations and was told no, not allowed this year. This could have been avoided.
2. A bloke who was in the race (and did get in my way once) but wasnt a competitor. He seemed to know a lot of the older folk who had done 6foot many many times. He was very solid/stocky, wore glases, maybe in his 50's? He would have gone through Cox's at about 1:40 if he started in Wave 3. Each time he went past a checkpoint he was asked to show his number by the vollies and he said something like "nope - just out for a Sunday run". Laughed when one of them at one station piped back "well its Saturday so get off the course".
Anyway, people like this should p*ss off. If you know who this person is then tell him I said as such.

More reason to read my emails. Wednesday 9th email had the following:
Quote
Please see website for aid station locations. The aid stations will stock water, High5 electrolyte, coke (from about midway), gels (limited), energy bars (limited), fruit, snakes, vaseline, sunscreen, first aid and last but not least friendly helpful volunteers.
There will be no salt tabs/rocks etc at the aid stations. If you are dependent on that to prevent/stop cramping please ensure that you carry your own.
The race medical team will have a ‘roving doctor’ on the Black Range; an ambulance will be stationed at the Caves Road crossing, St Johns and the medical team at the finish (behind hotel) and 15min massages on first come first served at $25 ea.
A young female runner appeared out of the darkness at the start at about 6:15am and asked "when does Wave 1 start again"? I said "same as every year, and on website and in the countless emails, 8am". She replied; "oh,I don't read that because I have run it before"
Back to the salt, perhaps the vollie should have said "not provided" instead of "not allowed". The reason was that our sponsor did not supply the salt and because it is a personal preference, i.e. not a medical necessity I suggested that runners take care of their own
Unlikelyrunner, on 14 March 2011 - 09:30 AM, said:

Only because it was proving difficult for the spotters at each station. People were streaming through fairly fast and they were struggling to keep up. To have a non-competitor in the middle making things difficult isnt what they needed. And as I said, I couldnt pass him at one stage going down to cox's and I got a little frustrated. No reflection of the organisers whatsoever, just the selfish individual. It wasnt as if he didnt know the race was on.

The race was overbooked to allow for those. If I replaced them then we would have been over the limit, so they didn't deny anyone a spot- instead they added to the coffers. About 15 of those that informed me prior to race.

Yes, they are gun times. Races started exactly on official global time to the second (just check the garmin), waves are small i.e. everyone is basically on start line and start mat is located 50m after start in order to get everyone over it and not used as a nett time located. So gun times = nett time in this instance.

It showed a great attitude and you were a great help - many thanks indeed
Looking at the bigger picture, it shows that Colin ran a tight but fair ship, given the constraint of "850 runners".
You could say it was re-interpreted from "850 runners starting" to "850 runners finishing" and the numbers speak for themselves - we had 56 more starters than last year and 37 more finishers, and if we didn't have a higher dnf rate we would have exceeded our limit as it was. He effectively had already factored int he last minute DNS.
It was a tough call that we should have let anyone else into the run and run foul of Dept Lands.
2011: 877 starters, 844 finished
2010: 821 starters, 807 finished
Its a low ball effort by the 2 bandits refered to above - NO EXCUSE.

One of two things you can do with cramps is get off your fatass and train to the conditions and during a race keep up the fluids
I started in wave 4 there was plenty of water sport drinks, coke, fruit and lollies
I had cramps from pluvi but still run my best time from pluvi to the finish by regulating my running the cause was not training enough I only started in feb due to an ankle injury
there will never be a run faster feel better pill
the vollies are not expected to accommodate wingers sooks or wimps only to provide support in case of injury
spelt sooks wrong thinking of narks
All the best

Eight W2 came in under or on the W1 cut off (4:29), the first two had exactly the same previous time (4:31:16) and just missed W1, so a natural improvement to get into W1 next time and the third went from 4:38 to 4:22 but we all know now he is a sandbagger, in fact his splits of 1:28 river and 1:39 (pluvi finish)-13th fastest final split- indicate he could still go much faster.4th W2 was a 4:02 last year who asked for W2, 5th a 3:09 GCM qual (just missed cut), 6th big improver from 4:52, 7th a previous 4:31 and 8th previous 4:33.
First W3 to mix it in earlier waves was a previous 4:20 who asked for W3 and got 4:26 and one has to go back to 64th (4:31) to get someone where we incorrectly gave him a W3 from a hard to convert Canberra Bush Cap 60km.
The W1's who ran over 4:30 obviously either bad days or not in same shape as previous times (one year quals will tighten that) however still some like Sailaway who ran 4:27 last year and this year 4:5+ was admittedly not in same condition and asked for downgrade too late.
Thanks again to hatless for the wave allocation work.
Based on this I would like to hear the anecdotal evidence of passing slower runners on single trail.

Starting in the middle of wave 2 got me down to the bottom of the steps 1 minute faster than the middle of wave 3 last year.
Not much to report on passing on single trail. I got most of the way to Cox's without a single sighting of a conga line and was going to demand my money back if I didn't get this essential part of the 6ft experience. But then I hit a monster one for the last 2kms to the river to it was all good.

The only comment I'd make about waves is that there seemed to be a load more in the Early Wave this year than previous years. Not sure whether that is right or just my perception, but if someone is running sub5 hours I'd have thought that they should be in the usual waves rather than using the early wave for a free run. This is borne out through hatless's graph which shows that the top 25% of the Early Wave ran faster than the top 25% of Wave 4.
