Greetings all.  Preparation is on for our 2011/2012 season is as follows:

MOUNTAIN SERIES
Sunday 25/09/2011 Mt Portal 16km
Sunday 30/10/2011 Wentworth Falls 16km
Saturday 19/11/2011 Kedumba Half Marathon 21km
Sunday 11/12/2011 Terrace Falls 13km
Saturday 14/01/2012 Narrowneck Night Run 20km
Sunday 26/02/2012 Woodford Dam 19km

LONG COURSE
Sunday 27/11/2011 Glenbrook 25/34/42km
Thursday 26/01/2012 Knapsack Lap Race 3hr/6hr
Sunday 22/04/2012 Mt Solitary Ultra 45km

Few key points on Mountain Series:
We have kept most of the races, but added Terrace Falls.  This should be another scenic race.
We have rescheduled Kedumba HM to fall in November.  This will also double as a race on the Sydney Strider Super Series and will again be an interclub challenge.
We lost the Bedford Creek race, but rescheduled Woodford Dam prior to 6ft to give a nice rolling run with with plenty of hills.
We have kept our two favourite races - Narrowneck night race rescheduled to avoid Xmas and Wenty Falls.
We will keep the mountain series as 'on the day registration' until further notice.  Race entries will be kept to a minimum, but we have been put on notice that there will be entrant charge increases from NPWS.

Few key points on the long course series:
Glenbrook 34/42km will still be a qualifier for 6ft.  In addition various podium places in the 34/42 races will have guaranteed (not paid) 6ft entry.
Our Australia Day race will not have a 12hr option.  We will tweak the relay option as the race gets closer.
Mt.Solitary has been moved forward a week to give 4 weeks prior to The North Face.  We will be tinkering with the course and hopefully there will still be a short option, stay tuned.
All long course race entries will be online.  In addition we will not be taking long course race entries on the day.  This makes our race day registration so much easier, when not handling cash and registration forms.

Memberships:
Our membership will be $40 for the year, from 01/07/2011 to 30/06/2012.  This will include a Running Wild race singlet and discounts to all our races.  In addition members are involved in the mountain series point score and terrific trail series.

All memberships this year will be online.  We encourage all previous and new members to register prior to race day as we wont have the ability to accept the membership on course.  Our online memberships should be fully operational in the next week or so.

Annual General Meeting:
This will be held at 1.00pm on Sunday, 26/06/2011 at Euroka Clearing, Glenbrook.  This will be in the vicinity of the finish area of the Woodford to Glenbrook race.  Hopefully a few members will be there post race and can pop along.  We have the standard executive positions up for vote - President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and general committee positions.  We encourage anyone that has an interest in our group to come along and get involved.  We have a lot of behind the scenes stuff and this only happens with the time given by the committee.  The old adage of many hands makes light work, is never more appropriate when putting these races on.

Race Flyer:
Attached is a race flyer.  This contains information about all our race and memberships.  We encourage runners to distribute this flyer amongst other runners and running clubs.  Most of our runners that come to the races do so by word of mouth.  We do our best to get the message out, but we appreciate any other help from members and runners.

See you all out on the trails.

Also, are the shorter disatnces going to be available again this year?

Thanks Seris. What I was getting at is that last year at each of the trail series runs there was a short option for those who didn't want to run the full monty.

I gather I'll be seeing your smiling face up here again this year?

On line will be running by the end of the week.

Most likely yes for short option, but will be confirmed once we talk more formally after AGM.  If it is a yes, will probably be similar to last year.  We dont want to dilute the main race in the mountain series so would remain with aid station support, but no formal prizes or placings.

I'll see you at the AGM. The shorter option works well for those in my family that are still getting the hang of running as a sport.

Been out scouting options to modify the Mt Portal race to add some elements found in other races of the series. New course will be a cracker, with a couple of beautiful single tracks added to the sections used in series 1.

I'm tipping race 1, Mt Portal could well become a favorite for many in series 2.

Looking forward to running some of these again. I really enjoyed the Woodford Dam, Glenbrook short course and Kedumba Half in Series 1.

Any chance of Narrowneck race being at twilight instead of in the dark? Maybe starting 60-90min earlier

Part of the year 1 debrief and the tweaks we will make. I rode out to the turn point and the sunset was magic. We will most likely pull the start time forward 30-60mins depending to ensure that everyone gets out in daylight. Still like the idea of a portion of the run back in dusk/dark, just to make it a little bit different.

I loved the night run last year. My favourite short course by miles!

Don't make it too early start, watching the sunset over the mountains on the way out was unreal. The having the moonlight to run by on  the open fire trail sections with was unreal.

I think it's also a really good opportunity for those that don't get the chance to run at night with a headlight do in safe and supported environment.

Reminder our AGM is on tomorrow at 1pm following the Woodford 2 Glenbrook race down in Euroka Clearing.  Look for the RW banners, a couple of fold out tables or the group of sweaty runners looking very official.

Awesome - congratulations to Running Wild NSW on such a full program in only your second year. Injuries permitting, will see you at one of them next year.

Here at TRAQ/Queensland we will be looking at our 2012 calendar soon, and trying to avoid major clashes with your events (never easy). Could you advise which are your largest events? Also, why do you use a financial year for planning - was that just a quirk of when you started? I'm more used to planning runs on the natural year.

Best wishes for 2011-12  :-)

My choice was Trail running or Dragon Boating, both start in September. The trail races clash with the Dragon Boating regattas.

A few weeks ago was leaning towards the water sport, but the trail runs last season were too good to pass up - I am in for another season.

Thank you for factoring us in Greg - These would be our two Major races ; All up for both races we had over 500 runners

Sunday 27/11/2011 Glenbrook 25/34/42km
Sunday 22/04/2012 Mt Solitary Ultra 45km

The calender was critically geared towards the preparation of SixFoot track and the subsequent races for Northface100.
(Glenbrook is a qualifying race for  6FT ; Mt Solitary runs through parts of the TNF100 course)

We hope to be able to host you for race(s) when you and your members pop down here.

MOUNTAIN SERIES - RACE 1 - MT.PORTAL, GLENBROOK - 25/09/2011

What:   Mt Portal Mtn Series Race
Distance:  16.5km
Start:  Rangers Hut, Bruce Rd Glenbrook
Finish:  Rangers Hut, Bruce Rd Glenbrook
Time:  7.30am
Date:  Sunday, 25/09/2011
Aid:  Unmanned in Euroka Clearing, Manned on Mt. Portal Road, Unmanned at Mt. Portal Lookout
Mandatory:  All runners will be required to carry 500ml of fluid.  This can be either waist belt, handheld or pack.
BBQ:  Post race BBQ with various treats

Course:

Race 1 has been chosen within easy reach of Sydney runners.  We are using the same course as Race 1 of 2010, but have added some extra sections to make the course more challenging and what we believe is a better course.

Runners will start at the entrance to Blue Mtns National Park.  The first 2.5km are on bitumen and consist of a drop down to the causeway, a steepish climb out from the causeway and then a gradual climb to The Ironbarks.  Runners will make a left turn here and drop into Euroka Clearing.  Once in the clearing, runners will veer around to the right and head up Bennetts Ridge Fire Trail.  A short distance up the trail, runners will take a left turn onto a lovely piece of smooth single track that loops past the Nepean River.  Runners will re-enter Euroka Clearing and go towards Darug Campground.  The first unmanned aid station will be at the base of the single track climb out of Euroka.  After a steep climb and just before Portal Road, runners will take a right turn down another piece of great single trail that loops around past Portal Waterhole.  Runners will come out from this single trail at the base of Mt. Portal where there will be an aid station.  There is a climb up to Mt. Portal and then onto the Mt. Portal Lookout.  After taking in the views, runners will come back down Portal Road and take the great single trail back across to the roadway.  From there it will be a drop down to the causeway and one of the toughest finishes to a race - the climb back up to the Rangers Hut.

Course measures 16.5km and has something for everyone.  Bitumen, wide firetrail, tighter trails and single trail.  Views over various parts of the course and plenty of ascents (+570m) and descents (-583m).  This is the ideal course for anyone that is looking at an introduction to trail running.  A shorter, non-competitive option will be available on the day.  This will measure approximately 12km and will not include the climb to Mt. Portal lookout.  Attached are the GPX file, aerial view and elevation chart for the course.

Keep in mind we will not be taking memberships on the day.  All memberships are online and to obtain race discounts, you must register as a member prior to race day.  Race fees to be confirmed, but will be in line with our normal budget pricing.  Member shirts and series race bibs for all members will be available on the day.

Hope to see you out there for a fun course.

Naomi

Naomi,

This email was sent to 2010 and 2011 members this week.

Can we ask all coolrunners that 'quick questions' be directed to our email - runningwildnsw@gmail.com  We are trying to move away from answering individual questions on the thread.

Cheers

2010 and 2011 members,

With 6 weeks to go until the first race of the new series, a few links and information.  We have attached an image of 2011 series shirt.  This shirt will be fully sublimated and included in membership cost.  Hopefully you agree with the committee that it is a eye-catching shirt.  Many thanks to Get Shirty for the great design work.  Shirts will be available from our first mountain race.  To minimise mail out costs, all shirts to be collected at any of our races from September onwards.  Also attached are our season race schedule and Glenbrook Marathon flyer.  Please feel free to distribute to any other interested runners.

Just registered for the season and looking forward to a good run on the weekend well out of training at the moment but some of those hills are sure to have me back into training next week. Already have put Mt Solitary in the calendar cannot wait to have another crack at it.

Fantastic new website and was to easy to register.

one for the committee;

My wife will be up with our two kids on the weekend with me, if there is anyway she can help out and still be able to keep an eye on the kids(1 & 3) let me know as she is free to give a hand

Hey guys,

Really looking forward to the race this weekend - any comment on whether the recent bush fires will cause any issues? Not sure of whether they are close or far...

Cheers,

Xav.

Just signed up for season 2 and hope to be able to participate in a few more runs than last year.

Running in the aussie bush with a bunch of friendly folks sure beats pounding out endless lonely km's on the M7 pathway!!

Xav,

The fire that was of main concern was in Leura. About 30 ks from Glenbrook. The weather conditions have eased and this fire is now under control.

This is from our local RFS:

A fire has been burning near the backs of homes and down the escarpment at Olympian
Parade, Leura. The fire is burning in low-moderate fire danger and is being controlled by crews
from NSW Rural Fire Service (NSWRFS), Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW) and National Parks
and Wildlife Service (NPWS). They will be assisted by aircraft for water bombing. A Remote
Area Firefighting Team (RAFT) will be deployed to access burning pockets at the base of the
cliff.

Another major issue was the air quality up here over the last few days. I went for a run this morning and the smoke haze has cleared up and made breathing easier.

We are anticipating 100-150 runners for our first race of the series.  For those of you that dont know the start area, there is tight access from the railway bridge down to the NP gates.  The park gates will be shut until shortly beofre the start of the race and there is no vehicle turning circle at the gates.

We are asking that all runners consider this and not proceed over the railway bridge.  There is limited on street parking available nearby, but please consider local residents and not block driveways or cause excessive noise.

The best option is to park at the railway station carpark and walk/jog down to the start area.  It is a nice 1km shuffle down to the start area and will assist us greatly in traffic management.  We will keep an eye on any bags or car keys that are left at the start/finish area.

Bear in mind it is crucial we maintain positive relationships with both Blue Mtns City Council and NPWS.  Noise and vehicle parking complaints rank highly on the scale and if we can minimise them it assists us with race planning in the future.

Cheers Sarge - I thought it was further away but you can never be too sure when wind speeds increase etc. Thanks for the update, I look forward to the race!
