This has been driving me mad for a while now. I thought it was the cold, but it also happens when I run inside on the treadmill. Now I'm fairly new to running (since jan this year), and I feel that I should be able to run for an hour (10 k's) without stopping.... That is if my nose wasn't running as well! I estimate that I need to stop and walk for about 10 sec every 1.5-2 k's just to blow my nose to quell it's runnyness. I do breathe in through to nose and out my mouth when I run.
Does this happen to anyone else?
My nose gets pretty chaffed from all the tissues, so I was considering taking an antihistamine or a sudafed before I run. But I don't really want to be messing with my system. Thoughts? ... I guess I could just by some 3ply kleenex eucalyptus...

Have you tried breathing only through your mouth? That might fix it. (And give you a lot more oxygen!)

My nose & eyes both run when I run. Worse in winter than summer, and even worse on the bike than running. And worse on windy days, especially cold windy days!
I just try to remember to tuck a hankie in my waistband. Otherwise thankfully gloves go in the wash, shirt sleeves go in the wash, etc.
Some people are good at snot bombs but I've never managed to perfect that skill. Seems guys are usually better at that.
And I do breathe through my mouth too.
I wouldn't take any chemicals though. I wouldn't want to stuff up Mother Nature. She does a pretty good job, just not perfect.
Don't need to stop to blow or wipe.
Inconvenient but I have learned to cope with it.

for some reason I get a runny nose every time I run trails - weird.  The only noise out there in nature is my footfall and *sniffle* every 30 seconds or so.  VERY annoying but I can't think of a solution.

Just wipe it with the back of your hand.

I did try this today during my run, but I end up panting with not much contol of my breathing.  I also find it dries out my mouth quickly, and then I'm stopping at drinking fountains lol.

Me too. Possibly considered "anti social" by the PC crowd in the gym though. Just make sure nobody is looking and see if you can make it reach another treadmill so you don't appear responsible.

Sputniki, are you left-handed?
There's a theory that left-handed people sniffle more than right-handed.
Serious! But no help to you, unfortunately.

I saw my doctor a couple of years ago about this (not just a block nose, but constant running/dripping). He recommended an over the counter nasal spray which just gave me a bad taste in the back of throat and stomach. I've just been getting by with packets of travellers tissues which work fine.

Another thing that's been bugging me over this time is that whenever I push myself real hard I end up having coughing fits which make me feel like i'm going to throwup.

I suspect in the end I have a combination of exercise induced rhinitis and exercise induced asthma. After yesterdays run and associated coughing fit I've resolved to go back to the doctor this week to confirm.

The old Bushman's Hanky. Tried and true method.

Anything goes when running.. and I mean anything!

Bushman's hanky for me too, my nose runs so much it's ridiculous doesn't matter if it's hot or cold but there doesn't seem to be anything I can do about it so I just put up with it but I pity anyone who passes me at the wrong time.

The Deek Salute - aka Bushman's hanky - thumb over one nostril, blow, other nostril, blow. And definitely just breathe.  This nose in/mouth out was an urban myth created by a non runner.  Anyway, at the end of a run you are hot and sweaty and smelly and gooby (that is what my 4yo tells me) so a few lumps of ... stuff ... is neither here nor there.  Hopefully it will dry up when once you have been running a bit more.  I have only been waiting 30 odd years...  :Silly:

I'd seriously work more on breatheing through your pie hole, hell of a lot bigger area to get air in.

The bushy's hanky is without doubt the easiest way to clear it. Just remember in a race not to aim left or right and cop some other poor bugger, you get to save them ones.

I need a hanky all year round, although it is definately worse on a cold day.  When it rains I even carry a spare in a plastic sandwich bag on long runs.

Is it true about being left handed, or am I just gullible?  I am left handed, so would love to know if there is a connection - can't see how!

Ughh, the bushman's hanky is the most disgusting thing.  I see dudes doing it and worry about running through their snot, seriously suck it up...don't blow it out!

Sometimes a hybrid technique is best!

I mist admit my nose does run more when running, but only when i already have the sniffles. I find it a great way to clear out the system actually :).

What annoys me a LOT more, and tends to happen at the same time, is intermittent closing of the eustachian tubes. It's like your your ears trying to pop every couple of steps. Arrrrrggghh!

And ... ? Will it damage your running shoes?

Because I don't want to be subjected to anybody's bodily excretions.

About the left-handed thing.....
I got into a serious discussion once with a knowledgable fellow about why we have evolved into a right-handed species (mostly) as opposed to a left-handed species.
He said that tests had shown that the lefties sniffle more than righties, and this of course would have been a disadvantage when we were being stalked by sabre-toothed tigers. Thus the righties survived to breed on.

Yep, gotta make sure it doesn't hit anyone. Ran the 10km in the GCM and after only about 1km in some dude did a bushman's hanky just in front of me. Nearly trod in it and felt like dry retching then and there...not to good with others boogers..
