What is it with City2... That you need to run past the finish line and do a U turn back down to it? Hmmmm
And their Red group says for those who intend to finish the course within 55 minutes. Green is for "runners and joggers only".
But is food for thought. At least one would get a PB.

As expected they have radically revised their course from last year when they ran their first event under the same name. That run stared in docklands and was largely off-road on walking/bike tracks to Port Melbourne and then St Kilda. We all agreed then that it was a nice course, but far to narrow to accommodate a sigificant number of runners.
This course looks very much like the first part of the MM full and half. It could lead to a few cross drivers attempting to get access to beach areas at that time of year - it will be interesting to see what kinds of cut-offs they will apply.

The Age/ Sunday Age is sponsoring both events. Don't they talk to each other? There will be a number of recreational fitness nuts that are torn between the two. It will split the participant pool, the media attention (for 2 worthy charity causes) and the sponsorship $$$.
Not smart IMHO.

I started running at the start of this year, then did the 5k Run for the Kids and 8k Mother's Day Classic.
What should l do to train for 14k?
currently l am running every 2nd day, trying to build up my distance and times.

I would just keep doing what you have been doing but be patient and don't do what most of us have done and go overboard and then end up injured.
Just slowly increae the volume of your training and talk to as many other runners are you can as this is a good way to learn things. Maybe even try and find a running group to train with.

Movember is a great cause, so good on them and great timing with the race being held right in the middle of the month.
Unfortunately the course is very uninspiring and with other events on during that time (Eastlink Ride, Shep Half-Ironman) it may get lost. Is it too late for them to change the course!? Maybe something for 2012 when they realise entries weren't as successful as what they hoped for...

The only thing that puts me off is having to travel back to the start afterwards.
It's pretty impossible in Melbourne to not have a clash of events as there are so many things on offer through the summer. It's also the weekend of Shepparton Half Ironman, so that rules out a lot of runners who are triathletes. There are plenty of runners in Melbourne who don't ride who will enjoy doing this event.
Not looking forward to the running past the finish line then looping back - sounds cruel!
The weather will just be a gamble!

Hey Greg,
I'm a regular Mo Bro so I'm really looking forward to this one! My buddies and I signed up last week, hopefully it becomes a regular fixture.

Really looking forward to it, It should be really nice running down the tree lined St Kilda Rd, then around the formula 1 track, before cruising along the water front.
I guess it loops back so you get a great view of the Melb skyline going one way and then you can focus more on on the beach as you approach the finish line. Also I like watching other runners go past and you can give each other encouragement.
Run 4 The Kids was a good run but running on the freeways was a bit boring despite the nice weather and views of the city, it was much better running through docklands and the city the final 5km...and Run Melbourne halfa was good but was pretty much 2 laps of the same loop...i reckon this will be perfect and hopefully great weather too..
Now...back to training...

Welcome to running I guess. I understand there is a charity component and I understand they have logistical costs and these things dont come together on their own... but 17,000 entries is around $1,000,000... be interesting to know where all the pie goes
I made an exception for the Melb Marathon as it is an established event, based in and around the centre of town and high in demand but as a new event I find this a bit rich, shame...

I'm like you. Only really started taking running seriously this year. I managed to do the 10k MM in under 55min which i'm really happy about.
What i do is try to focus on distance at a constant pace.
For speed training I do hills and intervals. For hills, just find a hill that takes about 1min to climb (or is really steep) then try and SPRINT it and do about 10sets. For intervals, I just sprint one lap of the footy oval, then walk half, sprint one, walk half etc
If you can't be bothered getting out of the house, I do burpees while watching TV (full burpee with pushup). Try and do 100 and time it then try and improve on that time with every burpee workout. It gives you the best cardio, conditioning workout I know of.

Curious to know whether entries aren't tracking as strongly as expected. Though nothing was going to track like City to Surf Sydney.

I think we are all reeled in by some events when they state 'The official charity is...........' and we are led to believe (particularly first time runners) that some of the entry fee goes to that charity when it is not the case in most.
I think all races, when linked to a Charity, should follow Run 4 the Kids lead on this and actually state what the entry fee is and how much is donated to the associated charity (if any), therefore we have the choice whether we wish to run or not.
I think also that sponsors sometimes donate money to charities per volunteer they supply for the event so paying your money to just run may be an indirect donation - again this should be clear on the entry.
Everyone feels good when they they are doing their bit.
By the way, before I am accused of being a tight arse, I paid my $50 for the MM 5K and made a donation on top of that for CPEC

For me, it's really just that the distance and timing are both right for where I am at the moment... Oh, and the fact that it finishes right near home is a big plus!
Haven't done a point to point (city based) run before... Glad to see they have 'baggage trucks'(I always take a bag full of crap I probably don't need, with me to all races)!

Does the baggage truck mean they transport your bag from start to finish line? Do you get a ticket or something similar so you know which one is yours?

There are plenty of great cafe's just a short walk from the finish on Fitzroy St, most serve breakfast till late in the afternoon. A couple to try are 1 Fitzroy St, Bar Santo or Street Cafe.
If it's a nice day, there is no better spot to sit a relax on a Sunday afternoon
Cheers
