You must be way ahead of yourself- as according to this mornign's paper (and of course, now I forget which one), in a wraup-up of this year's trends that are fading and new trends coming along, under the heading "fitness", it was adamant that Pilates is making way for Zumba,.  It also stated that fitness-related apps and gadgets are going to be the new craze.  Clearly the journalist has not seen the thread on CR and had no idea about the myriad runnign watches/GPS devices/footpods etc available.

Headband and long shorts. Guilty on both counts.

This brings to mind the picture of WOOH running last year's Adelaide Marathon dressed as a bogan - an image I'd rather forget.

Political correctness! Oh no, on entry forms and in the results we must never say "sex", that dirty four letter word. It has to be "gender". :Shame On You:  PC needs a good kick up the backside.

On a different note, whatever happened to sponge stations? I spoke to someone recently about how they seemed to just disappear and he said it was an occupational health and safety thing.

Trail shoes - just bought my first pair after having done my first trail ultra and spent more than $200. I agree anything will do (and did the job nicely) but I like the fact that they are black and seem to have good gripping ability - still to be tested.

Celebrities and the like who slowly trot-power walk-walk a major marathon in 5 hours plus, usually surrounded by a posse of minders and personal trainers, and then gushingly claim "I've done a marathon" making out they have run the event and done all the necessary training (like the rest of us mere mortals). I have no objection to anybody doing a marathon this way - it is a highly regarded achievement - however they should have a finishing category called "recreational walker" or similar to put a stop to fad of misreprestative claims. :Phbbbt:

That's one of my pet hates, too! 'Sex' has been used in both senses for many generations, but somehow we seem to be getting more prudish as time goes on. Part of the reason for 'gender' rather than 'sex' is due, no doubt, to internet and email filters, but I agree that the primary reason seems to be political correctness.

The other factor is the influence of the GLBT lobby. We are supposed to use gender to refer to psychological identity and sex to physiology to avoid affronting transgender people.

Isn't it funny how society has become so stiflingly stuffy on trivial matters as this while at the very same time everyone seems quite happy to have rock n roll and sitcoms give way for soft-porn pop "music" and serial slasher flicks on primetime TV...

I'm kind of amazed that somebody would notice, let alone care, whether an entry form asked for gender instead of sex or vice versa.

I agree it's a trivial issue in the day to day scheme of things. I'm more sensitive to it because of my former job at the ABS where in the early 1990s they actually had to make a decision about whether to replace sex with gender on all their census and other products. They didn't replace it, saying that the term "sex" was not offensive to women and that "gender" was gramatically incorrect.

I went to a population conference and received a T shirt which said "broken down by age and sex"! (in all seriousness a common request by users)

Oh, and races that
  • you have to enter at 4.30am in the morning
  • have to type really fast
  • have to be really lucky to get in, or really stupid, or both, or cheat, or ignore what you are told by the RD, or laugh

Maybe I should hold an event where you don't enter, turn up on the day, donate a gold coin, don't know the race distance or the course and actually have fun.
Ah, that sounds like street orienteering. Damnit.

and belt buckles.
except if my belt buckle is from a more bad-ass race than your belt buckle.

In that case, wouldn't it actually be misleading to use "gender" on an entry form? At least I always thought that physiology decides in which category (m/f) you enter a race.

I must admit I was amazed when I briefly considered triathloninging so went and looked at bikes to check the costs out. For gods sake, how is it I can no longer afford a bicycle? I could afford one when I was 7. I just saved up my birthday money!

And looking at all the extras and shiny stuff you can buy for them, I'd be bankrupt in weeks due to exceptional weakness for extras and shiny stuff

You can buy a reasonable entry level alloy road bike for less than $500.  Full war-spec Di2 carbon time-trial bikes with carbon full disc wheels, yeah, they'll cost a fortune.  It's kinda like coming back from the Porsche showroom complaining that you can't afford a sports car even though Mazda will quite happily sell you an MX-5 at 20% of a 911.

Yeah thanks, my comment was very tongue in cheek though. Truth is I do have a reasonable road bike but just don't enjoy road cycling. I was always a mountain biker in the UK and never really enjoyed the switch once I got here, so I just ran more and more until now, where it's all I do. The bike is just gathering dust. If I ever did get into cycling though, I would definitely be bankrupt, so it's good that I'm not :)

In hindsight, I was probably a bit harsh in my response, but yeah if you're a bit 'toy' inclined it's possible to blow through some serious coin on bikes (I think it's the new golf).  I'm kinda doing it on the cheap and I've still got about $2500 sunk into my 6 year old carbon Giant (including buying the bike about fifteen months ago from a work colleague, wheels, tri bars etc).  Still, the old girl's got me past some expensive machinery (admittedly with ordinary riders on board).
