Hi Brettsrun

I am seriously thinking of entering the mt Macedon 30km Race.  However, I dont want to be out of my depth!  Is the field going to be the ultra ultra trail runner?!  When will individual race entries be open?

Thanks

jen

Hi Jen,
All trails+ events are welcoming of all levels though we do for your own safety consider your experience.
It certainly is not ultra ultra based or elite, so long as you can show some experience or other qualifying information that will see you safely complete and most importantly enjoy the challenge
Good strong walkers can make the cutoffs, the tracks are technical in many places and include some tough descent and ascents, everyone in the events help and encourage others ,
If you have any concerns feel free to PM or contact me via trailsplus.org

Awesome.  I have done some shorter trail running before and are building my km's.  Just waiting now for the entries to Macedon will open.  Any idea when that would be?

Hi JenJams,

Currently working on a new website and also focusing on Maroondah Dam,
It may open before Maroondah on the 19th of Feb, but if not very soon after

Spoke with Parks today, Minor course adjustment in the lower section this year
Will do some research and let you know what the new layout will be, but in essence should be pretty much parallel to the same for a few Km's where changes needed

I've been hearing that the 30km at Mt Macedon is tougher than your average (flat) marathon. Is that an exaggeration? I'm looking for a challenge now that the Williamstown marathon is off, but I don't want to get unrealistic.

Tabatha,
YEP - but a whole lot more fun,
also depends on the attitude you take in, if you try to run it like a marathon on concrete and bitumen, the ups and downs and technical stuff will bite you
If you approach it for what it is, a glorious trail, with nature and great people its a whole lot more rewarding then a road marathon, but still tuff.
Its in June to, so the air will be crisp, but that just means you wont over heat :-) Entries OPEN MONDAY MORNING 7:30am with current series entries and limited spaces don't leave it til the last minute like some at Maroondah who missed out.

G'day Brett

Back on track and I'm running TNF100 this year and wondering If there would be enough recovery time to run Macedon considering that it is approx 2 weeks later.Somehow I have my doubts that it is. how were you after last years race?. What would you suggest? give it a miss? See you there this year.

Hmmm, trailmad, tough one,
Obviously I didn't race Macedon myself, but did cover a lot of ground course marking post TNF100.
Actually I wasn't in TNF until two weeks prior (substituted another runners entry)  and it was getting around Macedon that gave me the confidence to give TNF a crack
If your looking for top end results (racing it) it wont be ideal 2 weeks after TNF, but if you just want to ease back into trails post TNF, I reckon it would be a great place to blow out some of the residual from TNF.
Otherwise, come out and help volunteer if your not likely to run, can always use some extra hands.
Happy trails, good luck with TNF Prep.

Hi Trailmad,

I am planning on running both events, too. I think TNF will take the juice out of the legs a bit and the last climb up Mt Macedon is going to be a tough one.

But what doesn't kill you makes you stronger...

Wondering about this myself - never done a trail run before, first will be Roller Coaster run next month! Done 5 HM, and 1 FM (2nd next month). Will I be OK on the 30km event?

Hi Brett, is it possible to get a link to an image of the course maps? There was a link to Chilliman's Garmin maps in another thread but it said I didn't have permissions to see them :/

Well time flies and life gets so busy, less then two months to go and so much to do between now and then including a couple of runs for my own body to be punished in.
Then the fun begins as I watch all the punishment the course dishes out to you all :-) Just kidding!
Have spent the last 3 weekends or there abouts up at Macedon checking trail conditions, re mapping the odd section due to some changes required by authorities.
Must say Macedon hasn't looked better in my memory. So looking forward to it, it offers some of the toughest climbs and descents of any going around.
Its a far tougher course then 6ft, Maroondah Dam over the 50km, but in some strange way it always feels really enjoyable "go figure" except zig zag track that does my head in!!

For those doing TNF100 you'll be fine a few weeks later, don't be soft, I'm doing TNF100 and I will be at Macedon :-) :-)

On a side note entries are still available in shortish supply, though trying to get a few more spots as I know you lot always leave it till the last minute
And I heard a rumour there is an announcement to be made about Macedon shortly that may need a few more spots.

The start finish area is likely to be moved to a far more accommodating and wind free warmer location too

More updates will be posted but for the most up to date info keep an eye on trailsplus.org or facebook page

re The Tan and You Yangs, the entries are not yet open, there is always a qualifying requirement to trailsplus events, but in 99.9% of cases it is designed to see that you are fit, healthy and able to give the event a crack as safely as possible to yourself and others involved
You don't need to be elite or even close to it, we welcome all, but check you out for your safety

Images to maps are available via the link from trailsplus.org
note these are being updated and the current ones reflect last years course

Promise it wont be the same temperature as last year harro, might be a bit cooler :-)
Has been absolutely glorious up there the last couple of trips I have made, it was like a summers day there mid week, its a different kind of special up there on those days,
but I still love the misty winter days, they are kinda eerie and mysterious.

I heard it was coming and now its official
Due to the unfortunate cancellation of 6ft track this year, the aura australian championships that are a part of the the 6ft event for aura members was also cancelled
The aura committee have requested that Mt Macedon event facilitate the australian trail championships, we look forward to many aura members taking on the challenge
to see who will be crowned the Australian trail champion for 2012.

As always trailsplus events offer discounted entry fees to members, if your not yet a member do yourself a favour, you can easily recoup your fees on entry fee savings aover a few races
and there are many more benefits to being a member, including insurance, points comp, ultra mag and more.

Entry to the Australian Trail Championships Race at Mt Macedon can be found here

Congratulations Brett!
This is recognition of your skill as a race director and I think you really deserve it. 6 ft may have trouble wrestling it back after this year - after all 50k is a much more appropriate distance and the weather is so much better down this way. :-P
I will look forward to someone smashing my race record.

I agree with Brett on the state of Macedon.  We have been up there a couple of times in the last few weeks getting familiar with the tracks; even took a tumble yesterday running from the tea rooms to cameron picnic grounds!  Will atone and be ready for June!

Hope it went well Jen,
Macca and I started at 2:15pm and finished the last 3km of 30km in darkness, was great out there though, will facebook all the pics shortly
The mountains and trails are glorious at the moment with so much colour and freshness, add in the country fireplaces smoking away, it was good to be alive and amongst it
though the muscles know they did some work today :-)

Hi Brett.  Just had a look through the facebook pics.  The trails you did yesterday are the 30km course?  We may head over there tomorrow for a quick look.  Quite an interesting descent there.  Now I definately need some new shoes!

Hi Jen, yes that was the 30km course, starting from the Cross, I have posted the Garmin File on trailpslus.org, if you don't want to do 30km you can start on Baringo rd about 2km in from the main macedon rd where the junction to the lake picnic ground is, if you head out from there you can do a 12 km loop through the bush, including steep sections pine forest up and down towrong and back up zig zag track to where you start
Have fun, its house chores today for me.. had my fun yesterday

We didn't get to Macedon yesterday.  So had to do a boring normal road run!  Our plan is to head up there Anzac Day now, attend a service and then go for a run!

Just quickly, I did post a topic in shoes but thought would put it out here too.  I am in need of good, economical, reliable trail shoes.  I do pronate a tad.  Just curious in what people run in or recommend.  So many shoes out there.  Are Brooks trail shoes any good? (seeing as I run normally in Brooks)

Hi Jenjams. I run in Brooks Cascadia. They are certainly the best trail shoe I have used. Definitely worth trying a pair on.

Hi Brett,

There is mention of short course options of around 10k for trailsplus events. Will there be such an option for Macedon?

I reckon Adrenaline ASR 8 are pretty good they are trail version of popular road version for the average pronater.

I am on my second pair of Addidas Kanadia. They have a killer tred. Just the shot for Macedon.

Yep with a bit of rain of late no doubt Macedon will be at is mysterious best, great trails will be come a bit more challenging, the flora will be sensational and fauna ruffling in the leaves might grab your laces and trip you up :-)
Was hoping to get up there for the dawn ANZAC service and then run 30km, but looks like duty calls in another direction for the day,
ENTRIES have been flowing in of late and the limit has almost been reached, so if your thinking of having a run in the National Championships 50km event or Victorian Trail Running Championships, don't leave it to late.
Heard a rumour that a couple of gun NSW runners may make the journey too, will certainly test the best from over the border if they take the challenge :-)

We are also thinking of heading to the Dawn Service up there and then I am going to run a section including the Zig Zag track.  The greasy conditions will be mighty interesting.  Giving a pair of Puma Trailfox shoes a trial!

Only did a short 10km run.  Quite greasy up there now!  Tested the new shoes and only slid once going down the Link Track and once coming back up Link track.  Zigzag was fun and pretty much had the trails to myself this morning!

Hi Brett,
Looking forward to Macedon. Is there a garmin file available for the 30k to 50k section?
Cheers,
Kev

Kev, you'll have to come and buy a new Garmin first. ;)

Slight changes from last year, we will put something up once finalised.

You could always sell off the kids for scientific experiments :)

With a few entries snapped up today Macedon will close shortly, with only a few spots left I will close all and focus on the final preparations (along with TNF100 tossed in between)
For those who miss out we would love to have you come and support the others by volunteering on the day.
We will be offering guaranteed places and or free race entries to other trailsplus events as a thank you. Volunteer duties are for various times ranging from 3 - 10 hrs
If your up for it drop me an email via trailsplus.org or trailsplus@gmail.com
cheers Brett

Aaaah, yes, Mt Macedon. Remember it so well from DNF-ing last year. This is a cold place to be!! But some unfinished business, so am coming back and this year no stopping at the 30km 'warm' corner. Will be doing a 30 km loop with some Oxfam mates tomorrow (Saturday 12th May) starting at 10:00 from the cafe at the cross. If you want to tag along, will be happy with your company!

Will be shooting photos once more on the day (that is, Gilda will be). Hope you are all coming back for a second go!

Some photosfrom last year.
