Hi guys,

Hi posted in here a few months ago in relation to sustaining a stress fracture to the cuboid bone in my foot.

Well, it's now been almost 6 months since I first sustained the injury and about 4 months since diagnosis and commencement of treatment :(

To date, I am still in a moon boot for this SFX.  I had a MRI in mid December which showed the SFX is still there.  I was advised to keep wearing the moon boot for another 3 weeks and re-assess.  Well, I did that and I am still in pain :( 4 months in a moon boot is doing my head in! And not to mention missing out on running :( I was advised at diagnosis it would take approx 6-8 weeks to heal, I mean...4 months on and still no good??

So, I am off to a sports doctor at Olympic Park in Geelong this week for further assessment.

My query is, does anyone have any advice or experience about what damage such a long term stress fracture will do?  Will it hinder my future running?
I did not sustain this SFX from running at all.

Many thanks in advance for your help,

Tanya

Hard to answer your questions online.
Make sure you make a list of questions before you go to the sports doctor so you can get as many answers as possible.
You would normally expect a stress fracture to have healed within 6 months (that seems quite a long time).  Have you been completely non weight bearing.  As I said, without a thorough history and assesment, online advice isn't the best.
Good Luck

Thanks so much for your reply :)

I saw my sports doctor on Friday and he had some positive advice for me, which is the first I have heard in a long time :) Had to have a CT scan and will hopefully get some answers within the next few days.

I understand it is hard to answer online, but really all I am trying to get an idea of is whether this kind of injury may in any way give me long term damage.

I was wondering if anyone else had any experience with stress fractures in the feet that may have taken longer to heal and therefore have ended up with damage that has hindered their running?

I am off to see my Physio this week so he may be able to give me an idea :)

Many thanks again,

Tanya

A guy I know had a stressie in his lower tibia that lasted 12+ months, despite stints in moon boots. His doctor said, in hindsight, he should have been more aggressive and put him on crutches for 100% non weight bearing because it is, after all, a broken bone you're dealing with.

Perhaps you need to be similarly aggressive and go on crutches for a while. Desperate situations require desperate actions. Good luck.

Campbell,

You got it in one, I got the results back from a CT I had and there is still a stress fracture, so after almost 6 months, it still has not healed...the doc is more worried about what damage wearing the moon boot for so long is doing, so, it's out of the moon boot to try and get some movement happening back in my foot/ankle and back on crutches, non-weight bearing for a few weeks to see if that helps.

Am certainly hoping for some good news soon :) Although the doc does sound very positive that he will get me back running, so that helps :)

Thanks for the advice,

Tanya
