I have just had 3 weeks off after an operation.  Before the op I was fitter than I'd ever been and running my best times ever (for me!).  I have had about 4 runs over the past 2 weeks (also had chest infection and antibiotics) and 3 times have really struggled with breathing and fatigue.  I feel like I have just lost all the fitness I had built up.   I am just exhausted and need to have frequent walk breaks ! Is this normal as 3 weeks does not seem such a long break... How long will it take to get back to where I was before ?   Any advice/comments appreciated.

Seems pretty much as expected to me. Just run as and when you can. Take it easy. You'll know when you can extend it.

I'd suggest your issue is more likely due to the chest infection/antibiotics than the three weeks rest.

'Chest infection' - that will do it.

And in my experience, there's no shortcut back. A chest infection kicked my butt in early 2010 as I was building up to run my first Comrades marathon. I took a complete two weeks off running, and it was another couple of weeks before I started to feel good again.

Don't rush it - you'll pay for it if you do.

Two weeks later and yet another setback - few days off after a gruesome tooth extraction!  Am still feeling exhausted but trying to keep at it. I find it hard to decide if I'm really not 100% or just need to toughen up and push through the pain of training again ....
