Whilst doing some housekeeping, I just saw that on Monday at 2:10pm we set a record for the max number of people reading the messageboards within a one hour window - 146.

I think the previous record was around 123 set the monday after the city to surf.

Don't know who the people were or what they were doing.

We used to have a count of messages posted to the boards within a 24 hour window, but we don't anymore (it was a clunky manual method). We stopped it when we were getting over 120 posts within a day. We must be way over that now.

Well it is an excellent web site, so what would you expect!!!

Noting the time of your post, 3.21am, you must be getting up very early for that morning run????

Well done Kevin, the site is an example of the great work that yourself and your helpers provide.

Kevin does most of his best work after the witching hour. In fact it is quite unusual to receive an email from him before midnight!  :)

I think the previous record was approx 2pm also - clearly all those office workers slacking off.

As for the time of my posts - well, I have a job and a partial life outside of Coolrunning - its the best time to put in the serious work. Lucky I don't need a lot of sleep. Am struggling a bit now that I am doing more training. Often fall asleep (cat-nap) between 10pm-midnight and then feel refreshed.

"Noting the time of your post, 3.21am,"

I'm showing 18:21 - so is this site coming from the states?

There was another post somewhere (can't remember, my wombat brain is confused) speculating about the number of users - 3000 +registered, 200 or so regular posters etc...

I wonder if there will come a time when there are 'too many' users/posters?  Will there be so many new topics that regulars sit back and become 'lurkers' for fear of adding to the information overload?

wombatface, check the Time Adjustment in your coolrunning profile, I think it should be -6 hours. The post does show as 3:21 from my PC.

The time of 03:21 was indeed correct. I often go to bed late   :)

The site is hosted in the States, Houston, Texas.

The time settings can be adjusted so that they reflect YOUR timezone - check here for more info

yesterday at 1:58pm we set another new record - 195 people reading at the same time - can you imagine that!

We had a previous record of 184 or 185 set the monday after the Sydney Marathon last september, but we often have waaay in excess of 100 during office-hours !

Monday is a good day for setting records, I've noticed.

Nice to know that while I contributed a big fat zero to the productivity of my office yesterday after lunch, I at least managed to contribute to something!

I knew I should have gone for a run yesterday. On the topic, I noticed that there are almost 5000 registered usernames- should we all put in 0.5c each and buy a CR cap for number 5000? (Also, $200 each will get a cool million for Uncle Dave or ourimbar! ).

Kevin, I often go back to the messagebords to see how many users are logged in. It would be nice to have this info on the Active topics page if you have a spare 1/2 hour at 3AM.

minersun, the Australian Government has been doing big fat zero for the last 8 years and it doesn't worry them, so I wouldn't get too upset.

I'm so glad my numb bottom contributed to something yesterday.

It was the start of my holidays and a great day for sitting on the 'net and chillin'.

Some forums have the records info noted on the front page before you enter eg:
Most users ever online was 72 on Tue Jun 01, 2004 5:23 pm
(side note : Miss Skarmel was also part of this record *swish*  -  how sad am I!)

It'd be cool if CR had that, but I guess it's a different setup so not possible (but heck what do I know!)

Kevin
I sometimes find that if I forget to log out and just kill my internet explorer, when I come back in next time I am still logged in. Could this be an influence on the numbers if there are lots of users who are just continually logged in?

you logged in status doesn't affect the number of users "currently on the boards".

I think it measures how many people are clicking from page to page in a shirt window (a minute or 2), I think.

So if you walk away and leave your pc eventually it won't count towards that number.

I never log out at home or work but that relates to the cookie on your pc, and I know that's not counted.

Hey Kevin, have we broken the record since the above post?

Don't know if you have access to the information, but I would love to know how many hits the website gets each day, how many of those are members, how many posts per day etc.

Chanrita,

We haven't broken it since.
You can check the current record here (but it seems to only be reporting 193 now). We get a couple hundred or mor epostings per day. In general within an hour we have 50 or more people at any time from 7am to almost midnight. During a weekday workhours we generally have in excess of 100 at any time and often up to 170.

In general we get 2.1 to 2.5 million pageviews per month (that's about 8 million hits to separate files) and we use about 70Gb bandwidth per month. That's quite a lot.

The topmost webcentral hosting plan (a leading provider in AUS) is for 5Gb per month (we have 14 times that much traffic) and they charge $329 per month. hmmm....

Yeah hosting in australia is insanely expensive compared to the US as i am sure you know already considering that CR is hosted in the states. My personal hosting costs me about $10per month for 30GB which i never get near using.

I assume that you are on a dedicated server with that sort of traffic ?

We have been hosted in the USA since 2004. Its still a shared (but well-specced) server, although we may have to move soon. Howwver we don't share with many others.

And according to alexa.com, this site is ranked 85,290th in terms of internet traffic. Not sure how accurate that is but it just shows how much data is transferred across the internet every day.

The net's geek-o-nauts don't think Alexa is an accurate measure of data, but I have found that it is a good measure of relativity.

Why does it ALWAYS seem to be at around 2pm that record numbers of CRs are online?! :D

what does everyone think?
