I'm glad to hear it is on the 7th - I don't think I would have been available for the 14th.

Count me in also.

Great that it's finishing in the G...now I'm sure someone else has this question as well, so what happens if there is a Grand Final draw?

Haha great minds think alike
Surely the organisers would have considered that when they booked the date and worked something out

Woo hoo, indeed!

This will be my 1st MM. Coming voer from Perth and just booked the flights. Anyone know roughly when race entries usually open?

Cheers

The AFL GF is on a Saturday, the Marathon is Sunday.  I am sure they will clean up the ground in time.
They are able to run AFL games on consecutive days without any trouble.  Cant see that there will be an issue if there is a GF replay.

Pretty sure last year they opened during May, with some of the races already full by September

Awesome news.  That gives a two week break between the MM and the Around the Bay in a Day Ride.

Will mark October 7 in my calendar as the day I run my first marathon.

I'm in #11 - will be cool wearing my own # this year.

GF draw - I believe will be no issue for access to the ground but the expo will be an issue - I expect it will be at Fed Square this year.

Bring it on - Harry is ready.

YarraValleyRunner... I suppose that depends on how well you train and how lucky you are with niggles/injuries.

There's a good chance you'll find no trouble doing it if you're well ready and don't go too hard in the first.

Aiming for Gold Coast in May, then got a couple of O/S trips that will disrupt training for MM. But hopefully will make the start line for #3

Rightio... Well i'll have a bit of a ponder. I have been injury prone in the past, but it has been my own fault. As I said... pretty new to running and have only just started applying science to my running (masages/dry needling, correct footwear, recovery, not running hard every time I run etc.

I used to live there. Once there was one runner(me), then when I left in 1983, there were none(until now).

Hi Yarravalleyrunner. I know there is a small group of people that meet in Warburton on Sunday mornings for a run. I do most of my runs on the Warby trail and the O'shannassy Aqueduct trail. Happy to catch up for a run anytime.

Digger, My neighbour is a runner as well and is doing 6 ft on the weekend (if it goes ahead ) But apart from us . I think that is about it in Woori for runners ?

Oh rightio... That sounds like it could be a winner. I'm easing back in to a few runs after a slight injury, getting ready for the Oxfam 100k, but will definitely suss that out after that. I'll be training O'shannassy in a few weeks because it's the only section of the Oxfam trail I haven't done. I actually live right along side the warby trail up in Wandin so that's my usual training ground :)

I am in for sure. Will be my second and aiming for sub 3. I figure if I say it enough I will have to stick to the training and make it happen.

In 2010 I stayed at Mantra on Jolimont, about 5 minutes walk from the G.  You run past the door in the last kilometre.  If I am running a marathon this year this will be it.  I need time to regain fitness after not doing much running after New York last November.  I am almost up to the distances I was running this time last year so if I can stay injury free I will be there.

Has anyone noticed that the race date is also the first day of daylight savings? I wonder if this will alter the start time?

In 2009 I did a fun run on the first Sunday in October (which was one week before MM that year) and this was also the first day of daylight savings which probably explained why numbers were very small, and perhaps explains why I won the fun run due to the small numbers as not many could be bothered getting out of bed an hour earlier!!

If anyone is coming from interstate, be aware of Victorian daylight savings times/dates as I would hate to see you start an hour late!

wonder how late you can start and still get an official starting time via the electronic starting mat? I'm guessing there are going to be a few people who may arrive an hour late.

Perhaps they shouldn't alter the start time Grechy and we're all a better chance for the win!! :)

Certainly people will get there at the wrong time but such is life.  The world cannot stop on the first day of daylight savings and the last day.  By my simple calc we will lose an hours sleep, and many will turn up late.

You will not be able to start late as there are other events using the same start mats.  If you are late then you will not get an "official" time.  Cut-off times will be an issue for slower runners.

On the positive side, it means we run at a cooler time of the day - every few years we get a stinking hot day so starting at the equivalent of 6am is an advantage to me.

I agree but I think there is a good chance they will start it at 8am so it is more like a 7am start to make it more like it has been over the last few years.

Being Little Kev, I was hoping to chase Big Kev for a PB this year - which I may have been kidding myself on - but unfortunately I'll miss as I'm keen to give the GOW ultramarathon a go; which is 6 days later.
Having done the last 6 Melbourne Mara's it's a bit of a shame but on the plus side I'll get to watch friends and family cross the line.
It's a great day and running onto the G (pretending to sprint) is an amazing way to finish the 'Beast'.
Good luck to all in training.
Cheers,
Kev
P.S. With the Sri Chinmoy Williamstown mara cancelled, a good mid year run for those interested is the Traralgan Marathon in June.

in recent years the MM was about one week after the start of day light saving, so we 'kind of' started at 6am anyway. If the organisers push it to 8am they'd better have a few more volunteers and st john ambulances, given warmer conditions are more likely given the 1hr later start, especially for the slower runners who will be finishing around midday to 1pm. I didn't run in 2008 but I heard it was a killer of a hot day....to run a marathon.

I must have missed that announcement - when did that happen? I was going to do the half at that one - I'll have to find another one now. I see they have one at the Traralgon event - does anyone have any idea what the course is like?

G'day Jason.

I've started a Traralgon Marathon thread (June 3rd) of which I plan to run the marathon. Details to the Traralgon Harriers web site and entry form can also be found there.

As far as the course goes, it's an out and back, reasonably flat and on the road and therefore offering potential for a fast race, however I believe the wind/weather that time of year could present an issue for some.

Be great to see you get on board.

Cheers, Michael.

Hi all,

In for my 3rd MM and going all out for a sub 4hr having just decided this morning after reading the positive posts on here. I was so disappointed with my training efforts for last years MM (which shock horror equated to a very poor marathon) that I haven't taken one step in anger since MM last year, so really it is all back to square 1 for me.

Given I'm back to square 1 I have just convinced the wife to kick off her running life as well. The plan, C25K for both of us over the next 9 weeks, then by August I'll do the Sandy Point half and wifey the 10k, by October the MM for me and the MM half for wifey.

I am a tad excited and strangely looking forward to that familiar pain! (and reward)!

Tomorrow AM, the conquest begins.............

cheers

johnf

Just great to see some of the regular names from last year (digger, bigkev, and itsfunatthenbackofthepack) and also some new ones. Looking forward to being continually inspired by all of you. I will just run the half again this year in Melbourne. I really loved it last year- it was my first half.  Paris is my marathon debut and I have learnt from training for Paris, that I prefer half marathon distance. Happy training everyone.

Is the MM hard to get into?  After watching the Ironman registrations dissapear in a few minutes, I was wondering if you need to be sitting on you computer at midnight to register?

Definitely not! If it sells out then it wont be until months after entries open. Ironman events all over the world sell out quickly due to limited numbers and also due to limited events. As far as I know there are only 3 Ironman triathlons in Australia each year. There are dozens of marathons each year so with marathons you can take more time to make up your mind.

If I enter MM, it wont be until a month or two before the race.

Based on last year, the marathon did fill up but not until September (having opened during May).

Like Grechy I'll probably wait until July to enter, that way I'll have more time to assess how my training's going and can still get the early entry discount before it ends.
