Having a browse of the Adelaide Marathon webpage and whilst the homepage says that the new course details are coming soon, there's a map of the Course up already.... (!)

Great to have a city based course although methinks it may be up/down/up/down given the look of the route.  Might map it out to get an elevation picture for a better idea.

Would be interested to hear other's opinions. :-)

Have to agree withv you about the up/down nature of the course.  The start also looks a little narrow unless it takes place on a nearby road.

Disappointed it seems not to start and finish in the Oval.   Otherwise looking forward to the city centre nature of it, and will be easy to run all the bits beforehand, maybe even a whole lap, which will help on the day I reckon.
Just want to get registered, to make the commitment.

There is an elevation profile on map my run, it looks a bit hilly but not too bad though. I like the idea of a 2 lap course as it makes it more spectator friendly. Thus is my main goal race for the year and am in training for it already.

Hi mb2326, have you got a link to the Map My Run profile?  I checked out MMR, but there's a lot to choose from!

Wow.  This morning I went around the first 7km of this course this morning as part of a long-ish run.... GORGEOUS!

I figured it would be nice but it's not an area I usually run through. It's going to be a beautiful run on marathon day - the prettiness will surely take my mind off the legs Posted Image   Good to take note of a few local conveniences too.

Over the coming months I plan to add in lots of the course during my long runs so that I get really familiar and comfortable on the course.

Giddy up!!

Even though all the details aren't on the Adelaide Marathon website, has the new course been finalised?  Does anyone know if it's a 100% road course?  As my name implies, I love running on the road, and smooth asphalt is my fave (none of that around here though!).  Only 20 weeks to go

I'm hoping that this will be my first marathon.  Ran a very easy 15km a couple of weeks ago at the tail end of triathlon season, but I've just had surgery and can't run for another five weeks.  In two weeks I'll start swimming and cycling again in the hope of keeping my cardio fitness up.  I fear that with only 15 weeks of training the distance might be too much for me, but I'll start training for it and see how I go.

Thanks mb2326

It looks like the "toughest" climb is from 6.3 to 7 kms (from the Torrens to North Terrace).  If I've worked it out correctly, that's only a 1.5% gradient (rounded up).

What time are you hoping to do ?

I think there is another hill through north Adelaide too. Either way I don't think either hills are too bad and it looks like it will be a reasonably fast course.

I am a bit reluctant to set a goal time at the moment but I would love to better my 2:59 from Melb last year. Low 2:50's would be great but I have a lot of training to do first.

The info on MMR is a bit misleading.  It states the "Max Elev" is 72.0 m, but if you put the cursor on the profile, it shows a maximum elevation of only 50.28 at 7.1 kms!  Anyway, using the actual profile, I can't see anything more than a 1.5% gradient (up or down), which is insignificant, but I'm only working on what's showing on my computer screen, so if any local disputes what I'm saying, they're probably right!

I set my PB (3:22:36) at the 1984 Adelaide marathon, but if I can go under 3:27 this year (at 54), it will give me an age-graded 2:59 Posted Image
But I also have a heap of training to do before I can get cocky - my longest run so far this year is only 22 kms

Registration is now open.   If you've decided to do it, and register sooner rather than later, I know that SA Road Runners Club will much appreciate the early support.

Just registered yesterday for what will be my first Marathon,  no going back now.  Excited already.    Hoping to get a good bit under 4 hours, but a finish anywhere around 4 will be a good result.

Apparently the Barossa marathon and associated races are now up to about 1000 runners, so I guess the Adelaide Marathon will also be a good turnout.
All the best to all participants.
Cheers.

I am in, will be registering in the next week. Well and truly in training now with 30km + long runs on the weekend already and at 90km per week which will increase to 100km after the Barossa HM.  Only 13 weeks to go, just gotta stay injury free.

Even though I've had good intentions for the last few years to run Adelaide, it just hasn't happened :(
So even the training is going really well this year (102 kms last week), I'm going to hold off entering until the end of July :)

I wonder if they will again hold back medals for HM runners, I know several people who are doing their first half in 2012 interstate for this very reason. I think 21.1km constitutes a medal of some sort!!!

Looks like a great course though, I may be in for the 10km depending on how quickly I get my pre-pregnancy fitness back :) Gotta still have bubs first though!

I've registered for the half marathon, will be my first ~ super excited!! I did a 19km long run last weekend, that's my longest ever, felt great and I'm loving the training, not gunning for any particular time, I just want to enjoy it :) Can't wait!

So for all those training for the Adelaide Marathon, where were you this morning when that massive rain storm hit? I was in the middle of Vic Park doing 800m intervals, I have never been wetter during a run. You have to love marathon training.

Luckily I managed to get back in my door and in to the shower and then it bucketed down! Hoping I can escape it tomorrow morning for my long run

A group will be running the first stage of Yurrebilla (Belair to Eagle on the Hill) tomorrow morning as a practice.
If it rains it rains.   You get tough on the trail runs or you learn that it is just as much fun wet or dry.
I just hope its not overly windy, thats difficult in the exposed bits of trail.

Hey has anyone else noticed that the course map has changed?  The basic route is the same with some minor changes through the western half of the course, and an altered start location.

It has also been numbered the other way so ?? in which direction it is actually being run?  No course notes up to give any idea....

Any one out there with a bit more info?

I just printed off the map myself muppet. It looks like it starts at University Oval and ends somewhere just up from Adelaide Oval, although that might just be for the half. I'd say it goes clockwise and the numbers are Kms to go.

I'm going to run the course tomorrow morning, map in hand.

University Oval has a historic connection with the marathon in SA, being the finish spot of the very first marathon run here in 1920 (on 21 August), won by a Victorian Percy Collins in 3:18:22.6.

I just looked also and the numbers have changed in the last few days. It looks like it has changed direction.hopefully you are right crowpower, I have had it visualized in my head what I have to do and liked the clockwise version. (I know that sounds lame you still have to run just as far)

I downloaded an entry form (from their website), and it says the following

"All events start at the corner of War Memorial Dr & King William Street.  All events finish at the University Oval, Park 12 between War Memorial Dr & Sir Edwin Smith Ave."

I know from looking at their entry details in recent years, they have had countdown markers (kms to the finish), instead of the more traditional method - 5, 10, 15 etc.

Looking at the map again, it must now be anticlockwise, because there is a green arrow marking the start and a red stop sign symbol on Uni Oval. That's consistent with what you're saying RR.

I started at the corner of Pennington Tce and King William St. I was aghast to see what they've done to Adelaide Oval. It's been months since I was last in that area. It might become a world class cricket facility but it's no longer "Adelaide Oval". Anyway I digress. The course works well anticlockwise. The North Adelaide loop is very nice to run through but second time round you'd rather do it earlier than in the last 5km. It has a few mild climbs. The section through the western parklands is enjoyable, even in the rain, but I couldn't see any turnaround point marked yet at 10km, but for this run it didn't matter. I was reflecting along North Tce that I cannot remember ever running along it before although I probably have. The new hospital is the only "industrial part" of the course but even that is interesting. Down King William Rd and past the two universities is fun because those uni parts used to be the finish sections of past Adelaide Marathons. It's good to see them while fresher and going the opposite way. I got lost in the Botanic Gardens and in pouring rain but worked out how to get to Plane Tree Drive and then it's along familiar territory to the finish. Running past the uni loop with 1:50 on my watch made me glad I wasn't doing even 6 hours of the 6/12/24 ultra there in a couple of weeks. Just not my cup of tea but good luck to all those entered in it. Hope the weather's kinder to you.

Those running the half marathon will love this course, especially anyone from out of town who hasn't already run over these parts hundreds of times. The marathoners will also enjoy it and the second lap will certainly be much more scenic than that of the West Lakes course, Adelaide's other two-lapper and scene of the Fanatics every Christmas Day. I reckon this parklands course has sub-2:20 potential but will we ever get any such runners to Adelaide again? The last time was Lawrie Whitty with 2:19:00 at West Lakes in July 1980.

Edit: I just noticed Road Runner's question about it being paved all the way. Yes it is, either bitumen road or asphalt path. There might be some small section of concrete paving along North Tce, but hopefully on the day we can run on the road. There is some path-works in the western section but this isn't part of the course. There's also a new footbridge over the Torrens near Port Road.

I've been running sections of the course in the "original" clockwise direction but Crowpower I think you're right that it will work better anti-clockwise as at least the scenery/gradients at the end of the marathon will be a little more friendly (not that I think I'll be all that interested in scenery by the 38km mark!).

I ran the course again this morning, about five minutes faster than a fortnight ago and with better weather. There's a slight change - it looks like they have shortened the out-back part coming off the Torrens footbridge and added about 400m to the Botanic Park section, where I still got lost!

There were lots of people running it today. My 20 miler will be the Hills-to-Henley 30km in two weeks time. Yeah, wimping it with a downhill run, but next Sunday I'll do the Cleland Trail 25km run again. Looks like I'll crack 500km for July and I haven't done a month like that for yonks!

Thanks for the PM Road Runner. Looks like you're training well too.

I have thought about running the course but it's familiar to me anyway so i am not to fussef,so I just run round my local area. Did 34k today including running fullarton rd up to carrick hill and back. Feel good now though and recovering quick which is a good sign.

Starting to get excited about first Marathon.   Longest ever run today, 34k at very close to 4hr Mara pace.   Very confident of finishing, gradually more confident of getting sub 4.    A few days off later in the week, so will run a lap of the course as well as another 32k+ on Sunday.
Hope your training is going well, everyone.

Everyone's doing 34km runs except me.    Well I'll stretch the H2H out a little (warmups etc) to get 20 miles in my diary.

Good luck with your sub 3 mb2326 - looks like 2:55 is on the cards -  and with your Sub 4 Andrew.

I entered the City Bay today - last chance to get the earlybird rate. Looking to better my age in minutes for the first time!

My first full marathon is getting closer. I'm not going to register for the City to Bay until I'm confident I still have the use of my legs after the Adelaide full!

Did a 30k on Saturday and was happy with my pace and recovery. Saw the new H2H markings on the linear park trail, something new to look at and made we want to run it but I don't want to risk it, have a habit of overdoing it in events. I have a speed week this week then another distance week finishing with a 35Km.  Then I start to taper (not sure how I am going to handle this reduced training yet!)

Question for you seasoned campaigners - Do they have electrolyte drinks at the stations normally for this event or just water? I will have my own GU's but was wondering whether I should wear my fuel belt on the day too.

Thanks Cropower, sub 3 is the aim, a few things need to go right in the week leading up to the marathon and on the day for it to happen though.

I wont be doing the City to Bay this year, not enough recovery time (to run a race anyway) after the marathon. After my first marathon last year it was a good 6-8weeks before I could resume full training.  Maybe in a few years after running a few more marathons I will be able to recovery quicker.

Will skip the H2H too, the only reason I could see myself doing that is for a 30km long run amongst a crowd. 30 km at race pace 3 weeks out would likely see me injured or ay the very least running my marathon 3 weeks to early.  I will be sticking with my 32-34km run that weekend before the taper starts.

Damo, I am by no means a seasoned runner at all but in my vast experience of 1 marathon, I used gels with water only, I went no where near the sports drink, from what I have been advised sports drinks and gels do not mix well, although everyone is different.  I am not sure what the SARRC provide as drinks though, obviously water is guranteed but not sure on the spoirts drinks.  Being a small marathon (400 or so runners) you should take advantage of being able to leave your own drinks at specific locations around the course.  I did this last year in Melb with 6000 runners and it worked perfectly. I had a 700ml bottle of water waiting for me at 19km and I grabbed it without breaking stride, it saved me having to slow down at water stations for the next 15km.

Edit, a small typo, I meant 400 runners, not 44.

Huh? Adelaide has had over 300 finishers in the marathon in last few years. Smallest field ever was 2003 with 140 finishers. Then there's the other events, so always lots of runners there.

You should be right for your electrolyte drinks Damo.

Sick as a dog for the last week and missed Saturday long run.... Had done a 3hr the weekend before though.

Legs feeling a bit creaky getting back into it today.  Grumpy (but will get over that in a few days!).  As long as this weekend's long run goes OK I'll feel better about things.

Went through a lot of pain (not too much in the legs, thankfully!) for a sub 2:47 thirty-four K run this morning.  Hoping to do 36 in 2 weeks' time :)

hello there, I;m an indonesian amateur runner, and I will join you guys for the halfton, My best time for halfton was 2 hours 22 minutes in Bali Marathon this year, thus I'm an amateur... I will fly from surabaya-kuala lumpur-sydney and adelaide on the August 16th, especially for this event :)

I've been studying the course using Google Earth, it helped me on my previous halftons...

Could you guys help me with these few questions?
1. is there any time limit for this event? I see they start the halfton at 8.15am. It would make me finish the course around 10.45am (hopefully)
2. is there any finisher medals?
3. where is the best place my family can wait for me finishing the run?

Thank you and good luck with the training

You will be fine with time as the marathon will have people still running. In previous years finisher medals have been given in the half marathon, but I haven't done the half for about 3 years so assuming that would still be the case. There will be plenty of spots for your family to watch from because it starts and finishes in the same spot so they could go on one side to watch you start then on the other to see the finish if they like. Good luck on your run, will be a lot cooler than you are used to

Finishing around 10:45 will not be any problem at all.   There will be plenty behind you.
No finishers medals in the Half Marathon last year, so don't bank on it.
Your family will be able to find the best place while you're running, no problem at all.

Welcome to Adelaide.   Enjoy the event and good luck for a good result!

Here's a good one:

From Footnotes #88, August 1994

Interview with Adelaide Marathon Race Director Tony Ashwell:

Q: What is your worst nightmare organising a marathon?

Tony: People borrowing someone else's number especially if they are the wrong sex. Annie and I spent 2 hrs. trying to work out whether a runner was a male or a female on the video of the finish. In the end we recognised his dog.

It gets better:

Q: What are your personal achievements?

Annie: Living with Tony. As I continue to run it encourages older women to run. I enter races so other people don't have to come last.

Tony: 178km in a 24hr run, 3hr 16min in a marathon, 1hr 26min 40sec for a half marathon (Tony once finished a 24 hr run in his pyjamas after being in hospital). I was one of the first runners arrested and put in jail for running on the road.

Annie: I had to go and bail him out. Tony was let out in my care. The police put it down to stress.

With less than 4 weeks to go, does anybody know if the Adelaide Marathon website is going to updated any more?  For example, is chip timing going to be used?

On a separate note, Mrs Road Runner (my wife) has currently got a bad dose of the flu - hope she keeps it to herself!

I am at home from work with a bad cold, stuck in bed too. Really bad timing after missing last years marathon with injury. Hoping for a quick recovery with not too much fitness loss but who knows at this stage
