Hey guys,

I'm trying to improve my running form.  I know you're meant to lean forward from the ankles, but I find this
really hard... i'm trying to do this... my butt keeps going back for some reason.

Does anyone have advice or tips on how to improve running style/form... please see my attached
'.mov' or go here:

Any and all advise is welcome!

Cheers,

Aaron.

Bit hard to tell whats going on from that video. A bit longer, and if you can slow it down (the video - slow motion) would be good. Treadmill is good if you can utilise it.

Go have a look here: http://www.runningtechniquetips.com/

Browse through the site and buy his book - its $10 and the best book I've seen on form. (I have no affiliation)

+1.  A very informative book - and written in layman's language.  Probably the best $10 you'll spend.  (ditto, no affiliation)

Why, and how does one "lean forward" at ankles??

Just try to keep the upper body 'neutral' -hips, chest, shoulders in same plane- and relaxed, then make sure you generate high backlift and feet will land where and how  it has to.
edit: just looked at video (from what one can see) --you really need much more backlift, and arms a lot lower - try to brush band of shorts with thumb.

cheers

Ok, thanks guys for the feedback.  I've downloaded the ebook now... and am going through it.  Thanks Colin, I'll look into generating more 'backlift'... Running with proper form isn't easy... I'll let you guys know how i get on...

Cheers.

Thanks for that.  My work doesn't finish until 6:30pm, though... Let me know if you have weekend meet ups.  Cheers for the heads up.

Dear aaroncmt

Its amazing the difference one word can make. If you think of it as a 'tilt' rather than a 'lean' it will work for you.
Tilting is what you do each time you take a step forward.
To get the feel of what I mean stand with both feet together and your body correctly aligned (preferably with a bit of core control).
Just allow yourself to tilt (sway) forward until you are forced to take a step.
That body alignment, with your centre of gravity just forward of your toes, is what gives you forward momentum.

Relax and enjoy - your body learned to do this years ago  PL

My physio that I get running assessments done with explains it that running is controlled falling.  Leaning or tilting forward at your ankles is what helps propell you forward.  Your heading in the right direction just stick with it.  I also did the hands brushing shorts thing but that was to sort a different issue out than lowering my arms.  Good luck.

Ok, thanks... I'll start think of it as tilting from now on... I guess your right... thinking of it as a tilt rather than a lean does make more sense... Little tips like this can really make a difference sometimes.  ... thanks  Fanatic, I hope I'll get there in the end :)
