The Fabulous Phibes' Hungarian 6 Day Race9th to 15th May, 2012

I spoke to him on skype a couple of nights ago and he was excited and as relaxed as I imagine you can be, going into an epic race like this. He travelled over to Europe last week, keen to give himself time to get over jet lag and ease into race mode, and put the hectic last-minute preparations behind him.
Phibes has a very experienced crew, in the shape of a Scotsman called Alan Young. Alan regularly crews at multi-day events and has crewed the course record holder, William Sichel, at this event and a numbers of others.
The UK's Sharon Gayter is also at the event - she broke the men's and women's 7 day treadmill record in December last year. She has said she wants to set a new record at this event. Phibes is also keeping an eye on Wolfgang Schwerk. According to Wikipedia, he did the trans-Australian race in 2001, holds the record for the 3100 mile Sri Chinmoy race and holds the second best ever result for 24 hours (171.268 miles).
Martin's feeling confident, fit and well-prepared. You can watch live coverage here.
Go Phibes!!!!

I'm lucky to have a Hungarian filmmaker who is shooting some material with Martin over the course of the race. He sent me through some still photos last night of Martin and the course... it looks very pretty - the cabins are for the runners and crew. The weather has been very hot .. Martin will be enjoying the cool of the dark. I'm enjoying having the live stream playing in the background while I work. The sounds of footsteps and runners and crew calling out to one another reminds me of Caboolture and Sri Chinmoy.

I am sure Martin will do very well he has trained very hard for this race.

Day 3 - 148 (470)
Day 4 - 119 (589)
Day 5 - 103 (692)

I think he got food poisoning on Day 3 or 4 so effected his results for the last 3 days.
Looks like he is on target for going close to 200k on Day 1. Wow.

Picture 5.png 14.56K
14 downloadsI'm having a blonde moment .. can someone explain why one appears to say they've been running for more than 24 hrs, the other less? The race was scheduled to start at midday, so I don't get what the timer's recording.
Like I say, the combination of blonde and advancing years ... it's a deadly cocktail for effective cognitive function.

Martin said his first day target was between 180 and 190 km's - I was starting to get anxious thinking that it had gone wrong somewhere.
He's got a couple of overall targets in his mind. The M50 WR is 850km. William Sichel's course record is 834km. Martin's quite keen to crack the course record, because the runner who does gets their entry fee back (400+ euros). He also told me what the Australian's men's record is (Brian Smith? 1002km?).
From what I know of Martin, one of his great strengths is his ability to roll with the punches and stay on top of his mental race - and not be overcome by the physical slings and arrows that inevitably come. He said his main goal was to stay relaxed, stay out on the track as much as possible and run 'organically' ie with a plan, but also with an open mind.

Phibes got to his goal of 190km (in fact 191.7) in his first 24 hrs, so he'll be pleased. His goal for day two was to clock up between 160 and 170 km.
He's currently in second place. Schwerk has about a 20k lead on him, but it's early days. Martin will keep solidly to his goals until he's got a good reason to do something else.
The temperature in Budapest is 23 degrees, heading for a top of 27. It's been a bit cooler than that in Canberra; Phibes said he'd been trying to do some heat training - kinda.
I'm trying to track down a contact for his crew, to see if we can pass messages along to him. I'll post here if I manage it.
Cheers
Sue

Do we know if Martin is fully aware how up to date we are and how close we are able to follow him. I hope so, perhaps he will sense all the support.

Wolfgang is a tough runner. Unfortunately, his performance at Trans Aust in 2001 was compromised by not having a dedicated support crew, and having to share limited crewing resourses with the other (slower) German runners. As his Sri Chinmoy 3100 mile and 24 Hour performances show, he is certainly a talented runner.
He is thoughtful and interesting man, too. A talented craftsman, when he is not running he makes musical instruments. I can imagine Wolfgang and Martin enjoying some long conversations over the coming days.

Phibes has a new NR = 340 km
my understanding is, this is record in the road category, as his Track category records are likely much better, I do not remember his Caboolture and Surgeres kms.

There is an 8 hour time difference between AEST and where the race is run, I guess the blue clock is synchronised to the PC time, not the local race time.

So at almost 74 hrs, his total is 476. By my dubious maths that's an average of just under 100 miles a day.
Legend.
Hang in there Phibes - keeping churning out the k's.

It's currently dark & wet over there, so might be time to flood the guestbook with messages of support and/or good humour for Martin.
The first field is for the athletes name, then your e-mail, then your message, then copy the 4 digit code.
It did not update immediately, but a page refresh updated with the comment.

Phibes will really be digging deep to bring it home now. He'll be thinking about his goals, about his performance and total so far, and what he needs to do to finish the race with the result that he's after.
Go Martin!
