Starting in ten minutes (if I've got my time differences worked out) Phibes will set out on his third 6 day adventure, this time in Hungary.

I spoke to him on skype a couple of nights ago and he was excited and as relaxed as I imagine you can be, going into an epic race like this. He travelled over to Europe last week, keen to give himself time to get over jet lag and ease into race mode, and put the hectic last-minute preparations behind him.

Phibes has a very experienced crew, in the shape of a Scotsman called Alan Young. Alan regularly crews at multi-day events and has crewed the course record holder, William Sichel, at this event and a numbers of others.

The UK's Sharon Gayter is also at the event - she broke the men's and women's 7 day treadmill record in December last year. She has said she wants to set a new record at this event. Phibes is also keeping an eye on Wolfgang Schwerk. According to Wikipedia, he did the trans-Australian race in 2001, holds the record for the 3100 mile Sri Chinmoy race and holds the second best ever result for 24 hours (171.268 miles).

Martin's feeling confident, fit and well-prepared. You can watch live coverage here.

Go Phibes!!!!

On the leaderboard, the name of the Hungarian runner - who was in the lead - has gone dark. I wonder if that means he's asleep or pulled out?

I'm lucky to have a Hungarian filmmaker who is shooting some material with Martin over the course of the race. He sent me through some still photos last night of Martin and the course... it looks very pretty - the cabins are for the runners and crew. The weather has been very hot .. Martin will be enjoying the cool of the dark. I'm enjoying having the live stream playing in the background while I work. The sounds of footsteps and runners and crew calling out to one another reminds me of Caboolture and Sri Chinmoy.

That is the most fantastic website. Just awesome: real time leaderboard, results by hour, lap times, graphs, indication whether runners are on track/resting, live video stream, photos etc.

Daily totals (and cumulative)  for Phibes' last 6 Day race in New York in 2011

Day 1 - 179

Day 2 - 143 (322)

Day 3 - 148 (470)

Day 4 - 119 (589)

Day 5 - 103 (692)

Day 6 - 92 (784)

I think he got food poisoning on Day 3 or 4 so effected his results for the last 3 days.

Looks like he is on target for going close to 200k on Day 1. Wow.

I'm confused. The digital clock says this:

Attached File  Picture 4.png   16.05K   14 downloads

... but then the time besides their name says this:

Attached File  Picture 5.png   14.56K   14 downloads

I'm having a blonde moment .. can someone explain why one appears to say they've been running for more than 24 hrs, the other less? The race was scheduled to start at midday, so I don't get what the timer's recording.

Like I say, the combination of blonde and advancing years ... it's a deadly cocktail for effective cognitive function.

LDP, I was also trying to figure this out. It is about 6:15am in Hungary at the moment and they have been running for 18 hours and 15 mins, so it looks like they started on time (i.e noon). Clock seems to be out by 8 hours :unknw:

I am following preparation for Prague marathon this sunday (Lee Troop in it trying for A qualifier) as my friends are going for their PB's there

and the weather report is for a cool change, actually for very cold weather sunday so this well might cool down in Hungary too

Martin said his first day target was between 180 and 190 km's - I was starting to get anxious thinking that it had gone wrong somewhere.

He's got a couple of overall targets in his mind. The M50 WR is 850km. William Sichel's course record is 834km. Martin's quite keen to crack the course record, because the runner who does gets their entry fee back (400+ euros). He also told me what the Australian's men's record is (Brian Smith? 1002km?).

From what I know of Martin, one of his great strengths is his ability to roll with the punches and stay on top of his mental race - and not be overcome by the physical slings and arrows that inevitably come. He said his main goal was to stay relaxed, stay out on the track as much as possible and run 'organically' ie with a plan, but also with an open mind.

Just looking at phibes first total for almost day one and will be getting close to 200k. If he can do 150k for the next two days that will take him somewere near 500k mark. Then I think martin has every chance of going over 900k plus.Best of luck martin, I Think he will pull out a big total at the end. DONT THINK ANY RUNNER HAS GONE OVER 900K FOR A GOOD COULPLE OF YEARS NOW. WILL Be watching this race very closely.

Looks like there's a lunch break on... all the runners' names have gone blue on the leaderboard (signifying they've been off the track for at least twenty minutes) and it looks pretty lonely on the track.

Phibes got to his goal of 190km (in fact 191.7) in his first 24 hrs, so he'll be pleased. His goal for day two was to clock up between 160 and 170 km.

He's currently in second place. Schwerk has about a 20k lead on him, but it's early days. Martin will keep solidly to his goals until he's got a good reason to do something else.

The temperature in Budapest is 23 degrees, heading for a top of 27. It's been a bit cooler than that in Canberra; Phibes said he'd been trying to do some heat training - kinda.

I'm trying to track down a contact for his crew, to see if we can pass messages along to him. I'll post here if I manage it.

Cheers
Sue

Schwerk is now 15k ahead of Martin. Both are now back on the course running after a couple of hours rest.

Schwerk just had a 2 hr 52 min break and Martin had a 1 hr 52 min break. Will be interesting to see how it all pans out in the next few days. Go Martin !!!!!

After 38hrs 30mins ..

1. schwerk 287k
2. fryer 272k
3. accorsi 260k currently off track
4. ferenc 251k

I would normally be very off hand about reality T.V. but this is addictive.
Do we know if Martin is fully aware how up to date we are and how close we are able to follow him. I hope so, perhaps he will sense all the support.

Wolfgang is a tough runner. Unfortunately, his performance at Trans Aust in 2001 was compromised by not having a dedicated support crew, and having to share limited crewing resourses with the other (slower) German runners. As his Sri Chinmoy 3100 mile and 24 Hour performances show, he is certainly a talented runner.

He is thoughtful and interesting man, too. A talented craftsman, when he is not running he makes musical instruments. I can imagine Wolfgang and Martin enjoying some long conversations over the coming days.

I think, 'Yeah, Phibes is the same age as me - I can do that - I can run a long way ..." Then I look at his progress. Bloody Hell!

I think I'll go out for a feeble little jog in the morning...

the scoreboard is showing NR and NR-age records, for the 48 H split, NR for National Records)

Phibes has a new NR = 340 km

my understanding is, this is record in the road category, as his Track category records are likely much better, I do not remember his Caboolture and Surgeres kms.

I was worried few minutes ago, when the last lap for Phibes showed 15+ minutes (900 m), but now he did 6:41, currently it is the fastest lap at this midnight hour there on the board, so back to flying mode

runners on the 1., 3., and 4. place are off the course and Martin is building up a nice buffer for his 2. position and closing in on Schwerk

the split after day 3 will be very interesting, 11H to run till than

There is an 8 hour time difference between AEST and where the race is run, I guess the blue clock is synchronised to the PC time, not the local race time.

Martin's just had a couple of hours off the track, but it back now with gusto - his first lap was 5.47.

So at almost 74 hrs, his total is 476. By my dubious maths that's an average of just under 100 miles a day.

Legend.

Hang in there Phibes - keeping churning out the k's.

There is a guestbook here http://www.unixsport...degkonyv?page=0 which indicates that messages will be passed onto runners.
It's currently dark & wet over there, so might be time to flood the guestbook with messages of support and/or good humour for Martin.

The first field is for the athletes name, then your e-mail, then your message, then copy the 4 digit code.
It did not update immediately, but a page refresh updated with the comment.

Martin had a few extra stops during the night, (looked pretty crappy weather from the live cams) but has done well to hold the 40k gap.

Anything is possible but I'd expect the focus to be on consolidating 2nd and finishing the beast.

Phibes will really be digging deep to bring it home now. He'll be thinking about his goals, about his performance and total so far, and what he needs to do to finish the race with the result that he's after.

Go Martin! :yahoo:

Daily totals (and cumulative)  for Phibes' last 6 Day race in New York in 2011

Day 1 - 179

Day 2 - 143 (322)

Day 3 - 148 (470)

Day 4 - 119 (589)

Day 5 - 103 (692)

Day 6 - 92 (784)

I think he got food poisoning on Day 3 or 4 so effected his results for the last 3 days.

Looks like he is on target for going close to 200k on Day 1. Wow.

Martin has just passed 700k with 5 hours of day 5 still to go, 38k behind Wolfgang but a comfortable 52k ahead of 3rd. Woohoo!
