I was thinking of having an end of year awards a bit like the ARIA's.

1) To start with, people are free to nominate the categories - just add to this thread.
2) Sometime next week (or so), category nominations will close, and I will develop a nomination form, so people can nominate options for each category. There need be no "seconder".
3) On 1st December, voting will be opened - you can only vote for what was nominated and you won't be able to vote more than once. No one can see the vote tally until after voting has closed
4) Voting closes on 21st December and prizes awarded immediately after. Actually there probably won't be any real prizes, just an entry in the Reader Awards Hall of Fame.

(note CoolRunning may use categories or nominations at our discretion ie may reject inappropriate suggestions, our definition of inappropriate)

Categories to start the ball rolling:
- Best Australian Marathon Race
- Best Australian Race shorter than a marathon
- Best Australian UltraMarathon Race (longer than a marathon)
- Best Australian Male Athlete
- Best Australian Female Athlete
- Best Overseas Athlete (male or female)
- Best Australian Running Club
- Best Australian Running Shop
- This year's most worn brand of running shoes
- This year's most essential running accessory (eg Bodyglide, Mp3 player, GPS)
- CoolRunning thread of the year
- CoolRunning personality of the year
- CoolRunning's most acomplished athlete of the year

You can suggest alternative dates or comment on the process as well as make suggestions for the categories, but please - no nominations for anything other than the category names yet.

Clearly we will make this an annual event.

how about "most inspirational coolrunner".

A category to vote for the coolrunner who has most inspired you in 2004 - regardless of actual athletic ability.

edit: for consistancy with other topics maybe should change that to most inspirational runner - doesn't have to be a coolrunner.

Nice idea Kev.

How about 'Most Outstanding Member of the Running Community' Maybe call it the "The Nigel Aylott Award", who seemed to represent all that is good about running. Basically for somebody who has gone out of there way to promote the sport.

Damn, I really want to win something but I don't think any of those categories suit me, how about "The best Gnscon of the year"?
But seriously:
Coolrunning's most improved.
CR's ambassador of the year.

Probably not a good idea to have too many categories otherwise it will go for 7 hours whilst they hand out the running equivalent of "Best lighting in afternoon childrens show".

Excellent Idea Kevin!
Excellent Idea MPHaz!
Excellent Idea Plu!
I do feel a 'coolrunning photo of the year award' is a must.

And Kevin if you could just change that 'This year's most worn brand of running shoes' to 'This year's most worn-out running shoes' I do believe I could win an award;) , you could say I'd be a shoe in  ;)
Cheers

There should be something there to commemorate some of the not so good entries, a few come to mind immediately, however, how about "The Best of the Worst".  :D    :D    :D

"Most improved CoolRunner" springs to mind.

Will we allow campaigning on these?

eg. in the above category, many of us are well-aware of the great progress made by the likes of MPHaz and Li'l Elf, but there may be even greater achievements by lesser known members of the community.  Should people be able to 'nominate'/'promote' people they think are worthy recipients?

Also, on the CoolRunning awards - are there any minimum hurdles to be considered a  'CoolRunner'.  I think Lee Troop has posted on the site once or twice, but does this really qualify him?

Note - these questions are designed to clarify some grey areas, not put down this great idea...

Cheers

Sparkie - after we define the categories (next week) I will produce a nomination form so anyone can nominate anyone else. Spruiking can occur in the community chatter section

A good point about definition of coolrunner - to be able to vote you must be registered to the messageboards.

Any reader (even those not registered) can nominate, and you can make multiple nominations.

For a person to be nominated for the coolrunning categories, they can go by their handle name, so assumes that they are registered. I prefer the defintion of a coolrunner as someone who reads the site and calls themself a coolrunner, but to be able to vote for them we need them to have registered.

Sounds like a great concept. I love everyones suggestions to date as well.
Also:
    Best Australian Coach
Just a quick thought - maybe some of the categories could be further broken down into Senior and Junior age groups, or even by State.

A great idea!!

However, some personality categories like "Most Improved" could be hard for many to judge, as they are very much based on how well you know (or don't know) a person.

Also, those in with the higher profile (& higher membership base) clubs would have a huge & unfair advantage over those in out of town areas, or aren't involved with a club.

Any CR awards should be independent of Club type awards.

Kevin, if you are going to have best marathon, why not best half marathon, best 10km, best 5km, best fun run categories as well, rather than best run less than marathon distance as you have suggested. We don't all run marathons.

Also funniest cool runner (except Lucky Legs would win unchallenged).

malhop - at the risk of having a zillion categories, I just stuck at "short, medium, long" as in sub-marathon, marathon & ultramarathon, however I am aware that not everyone is focussed on marathons.

How about:
- Best Australian 10km Race
- Best Australian Half-Marathon Race
- Best Australian Marathon Race
- Best Australian UltraMarathon Race (longer than a marathon)
- Best Australian "Other distance" Race

(a race can only be nominated in one category)

I don't think there are enough 5kms to warrant a separate category, need to be able to get say the city to surfs (numerous places) and bridge-to-bridges to be included also.

Rather than best 10km race how about best Fun run under 15km.

I think there should be regional winners as well.
Will most likely just be a popularity contest with the biggest races winning.

I agree wholeheartedly with Colin Townsend.  All awards should be based on participation on coolrunning, so that club/community support will not skew the results.

That means no award for most improved, best coach, etc etc.

I would like to see the "best regional marathon award" or the "best small marathon award" as apart from the largest few the others have no chance.
Also a small marathon being able to say it was awarded a coolrunning award would be great for its promotion.
So I agree with Steve comment re regional awards.
However I do understand Kevin's Zillion catagories comment and would be happy with just Kevin's original list.
Cheers

Most scenic trail race.
Best crowd support.
Best race support, drink stations etc.
Best recovery village.
Best entry/race number pickup system.

An award for Coolrunning's "Eminence Grise" of the year perhaps ?

Being for that person who always has a good answer; that we dare not contradict; that puts an end to the crazy threads with a brilliant final word; that introduces light where there is darkness; hope where there is despair etc etc.

I will pass some of these sugestions by the other people that help maintain the site - and re-issue a more refined list - I like the idea of "best regional marathon award" or the "best small marathon award" - maybe twist it slightly to "best small event (under 100 runners)" and / or "best regional event > 100km from a capital city". yeah I like that.

Colin's point about popularity by force of numbers is a good one, although am keen on a club award.

If there will be any club awards, can a restriction be factored in so that you can't vote for your own club?

A bit complex to code perhaps, & I don't have much of an idea of how it could be done, but that would help in removing any bias.

Colin Townsend, you couldn't stop people voting for their own Club, for a handful of reasons, 1. KT wouldn't know what Club everyone belongs to, 2. you would think most would want to vote for their own Club because they are in that club and therefore they must think it is the best Club for them.

Overall, I could guess what Club would be most voted for, and I don't have a problem with that, strength in numbers is a great thing.

Speaking of weight in numbers is there a way of finding out which thread had the most replies and the most viewing?  Voting would then not be necessary.

I think these all sound like great ideas and a lot of fun.  All I would comment on is that we will have to limit the categories to some degree.

I do particularly like the idea of a few of the coolrunning threads- most amusing thread etc.

Please- no more controversy Freerunner - it's Christmas!    :D

I wasn't agreeing with the prospect of a Club award of any sort, but was just highlighting the sort of issues that need to be taken into account in doing these "fun" awards.

It's good to know if people are in clubs, & what clubs, & which clubs are good, but not at the expense of isolating those in smaller clubs, or who can't join one for some reason.

For some reason, only a handful or two of clubs are mentioned in these threads, so any such "Best Club" award will be "awarded" on which one has the most active CR's. Why would they vote otherwise?

Does this mean that club is the best?
And does this achieve anything?

I suggest keeping to neutral awards.

I still agree with Colin Townsend.

My club Intraining has quite a few coolrunners.  People have already voted which club is best by joining their club.  In the end it is just a contest to see which club has the most members on the coolrunning site.  Maybe that should be what the award is.  Not the 'best' club but the most popular.

Most prolific coolrunner with the most posts in a year. (Admin people not eligible)

Could also do most improved with previous years posts subtracted from this years to give a figure.

And perhaps best novice for most average posts/day for someone who first posted this year.

I think you should just do fun awards with a couple of blue ribbon awards. If you make it too serious people will be campaigning and it'll get bitter and divide the community. Why not make it something we can all have a good laugh at.  :)
