Here's the list for the Goat Run (21k) in Mt Ruapehu NZ later in the year:

• Thermal long sleeved top;
• Thermal beanie;
• A weather barrier jacket that is wind and waterproof. Lightweight running jackets, ponchos and the like are not acceptable for this event. Please heed this advice and avoid disappointment;
• A survival blanket;
• A drink carrying device. Note: due to the isolated environment there are no aid stations on the course.

I run 30k trail events and usually only use a fuel belt or carry a bottle. Any advice on the above gear? especially on a pack to carry it in.

Did some googling and looked through older forums on this site and of course there are a s**&^load of options out there.

Like the look of Salomon XT Advanced Skin 12L S-Lab Pack & Nathan x-ceed. not sure about the Osprey Raptor 6.

I'm a reasonably big 183cm 90kg. Any advice would be appreciated.

Can highly recommend the Salomn S-Lab 12 litre if you can get one, they are like gold dust. I used mine a TNF100 last weekend which has heaps more compulsory gear to carry and it fit with plenty of room to spare

The Kepler Challenge has a bigger compulsory gear list and I fit it all in this Inov-8 4 litre bumbag. I find a bumbag keeps the weight on your hips instead of shoulders when climbing uphill and allows better freedom of movement  and cooling over my back. The side pockets are good for gels, gloves & beanie. An empty water bottle or a removed thermal layer can be tucked under the elastic straps rather than opening the bag. At gear-checks or aid stations you can simply rotate the bag around your waist to access the main compartment rather than taking it off. The only downside is a tendency to bounce around on downhills which can cause chafing on hips. I avoid this by pre-emptively taping those spots with sports tape (Fixomul stretch). On long training runs I have used the purpose built horizontal bladder but for races I carry a hand-held bottle as it’s much quicker to re-fill. There is a smaller 2L version but you might struggle to fit everything in.

The Salomon S-lab pack is great but also look into another French brand Lafuma. They have a few very similar style pack that offer plenty of storage and are far less expensive.
Good luck.

I've found the xa20 to be way bigger than necessary.  Planning to pick up the new S-Lab 12 for Kepler this year.

Either the Salomon XT Advanced Skin 12L S-Lab Pack or the 5L version - they are by all accounts unreal
