Hiyas,

I'm looking at doing my first half marathon. I had a look at the training guide and wanted your opinions on it. Basically, is it too much running ? 6 days a week running with only 1 day rest ? The other days are mostly easier runs but should I rest / recover more often ?

Here's the link to the beginners program;

Thanks for any help.

If you are only running 3-4 runs p/w with a weekly mileage less than 10% of the program then I'd hesitate to go to 6days. If you are currently running 5, the additional run could be optional. Hard to determine without knowing what you are running now.

If you don't feel comfortable with 6 days the Monday or Wednesday could easily be replaced with a rest or cross training day.

Depends how old you are. If you are younger, then it shouldn't be a problem. Overall, though, you only really need to train 3-4  days per week for any training programme.

Last year I was running 70-80k a week usually 6 days a week and got better at longer distances. I then got injured had had to take 3 months off.
This year I'm doing 40k a week, plus two cross training sessions a week and I've got 6 PBs this year already. Less is more, but keep it consistent.

I don't really like the C2S programs as there is nowhere near enough km in it for me and I want to push sub 90mins. Before you read my running program I'll put in a disclaimer that I am 32 and I've run 4-6 days/week all year round since my knee surgery in Jan 2009 (martial arts related injury) though and train in the gym or at the kickboxing gym every day in addition to the running so I've built a good base over a few years.

I ran 6 days/week last year however 2 days were an moderate 5.1km run followed by 1.5 hours kickboxing training. I was running about  50-55km/week and finished in just under 86mins.This year I am running 6 days/week or 5 if I train in Muay Thai and have had no problems with injury except blisters, only having 3 toenails left and some general soreness after a heavy week.

Starting Monday in order I usually run 7.2km, 9.4km, 7.2km or kickboxing, 11/12.5/14km, 9.4/13km, 14/19/22/24km. Distances I chose depend on what my Saturday distance is going to be i.e. I'll run the longer Thursday and shorter Friday if I am going for a longer Saturday. Since getting my Garmin in May I've gone from a weekly total of around 51km@4:28/km to 64km@4:12 this week just gone.

Hi DCD, what's your target time? what's your current level of fitness?
