Well done KT on putting this all together again.

Too many great choices, be nice to have a 1,2,3 on each category

Also tough to pick Australia's most scenic race until you've run them all. Maybe this category would be better on a state basis next year ?

I like having the 'don't know, don't care' choice for all of them - good idea.

Lady Jove - that was a suggestion from last year - else if you voted on 10 questions then couldn't be bothered with the rest, your vote wouldn't count or you were forced to pick random answers.

Thanks for putting this together Kevin.

A couple of minor points.

You've included the AV Sandown 10km twice.

And Brindabella Classic is not a regional race according to your criteria (unless you can somehow argue that Canberra is not a capital city!?!?!?!)

Yes, Sorry. I didn't twig that these were the same especially as there 20 others in the list:
- AV Sandown 10km
- Victorian 10km Championships, Sandown Racecourse

Maybe next year we will get someone to proof read the list before voting is opened.

So true. I did realise that myself, and its a good point of discussion. The intent was to have a section for non-metro runs - specifically exclude Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth areas, it's debateable whether Canberra be included or not, and should it be 100km from Canberra ? Should that mean runs in Darwin are not included ?

I decided to allow Brindabella as in my mind its a regional run not a Metro run. "Maybe next year we will get someone/group to proof read the list before voting is opened"

It's not a competition or anything, but so far 128 people have voted in about 2 days - it would be good to get more than last year's 234 by 21st December.

KT,

Have you got the ability to email all CR's in one go?
If so, I'd send everybody a reminder to vote, as a lot of CR's only log on infrequently, and you would get a lot more voting!

There's a word for that, it's called SPAM.  Strictly a NO-NO.

There is a difference between trying to sell penis enlargements to those who have no need  :D  , and reminding interested persons that they may have overlooked something important!  ;)

An interesting point - There is a function that allows me to email everyone, but I have never used it ever as I don't like hard selling and I like the idea that CR is always here, and great, but we don't need to go out and ram it down peoples' throats.

Would people see it as a betrayal if we emailed all and reminded them of closing dates for voting ?

I wouldn't see it as SPAM, because it is information about the organisation that we all belong to.  For example I send emails to the members of my aths club all the time as the secretary of the Club.

If an ordinary member was to use the group it would probably be classed as SPAM.  Therefore I feel if KT or one of his helpers sent me an email to my listed email address I would be very fine with that!

I just last week registered an Australian domain name, so it is pretty fresh in my mind.  You are not permitted to use an Australian domain to send unsolicited commercial email.  If you haven't told people to expect email from you, or they haven't asked for it, then you can't send it.  Since Coolrunning is a business and carries advertising, I would imagine that a "come to this site" message could be classified as spam.  The prohibition on sending commercial electronic messages does not apply to the sending of an electronic message which is purely factual and not for the purpose of promoting or selling goods or services.  Grey area...

My take - we have voluntarily supplied our email addresses to CoolRunning.  If you give someone your email address, I don't think you can take offence if they send you an email!

I am registered to a few web sites, and none of them hesitate to contact me with information pertaining to the site or the services they offer.

I think Kev is well within his legal and ethical rights to send on "All CR email" on this, and would encourage him to do so.

So unless Kev puts in his email that he's offering Viagra a great price or a substantial renovation on your undercarriage, then we're ok then I think.

Kev, I think it's a great idea, I think the majority would welcome a small reminder by email.

If there are objections, when the new software comes around, maybe you can amend each profile to say whether you wouldn't/wouldn't want to receive ANY email from CR whatsoever.

I'd actually like a weekly email summarising the top 50 message/subjects/news/race results/reports etc, as I'm too busy lately to keep up to date.

Kato - I appreciate your view. I suspect I won't be sending an email, but I might. I have also read the various spam acts and you can't send unsolicited email to people who haven't asked OR you don't have an existing relationship with - I suspect itss fair enough if you are a member of CR that CR contact you.

MPhaz - We have in mind for some point in the future - when the database monkey (not me) gets round to it, that you will be able to sign up for a monthly email with your own customised calendar higlights - dates/races with a link back to the calendar to get the contact info.

Just voted.

I think the customised email out is a great idea Kev. I'd love to hear more about it.

Who will get The Runs this year. No, I will not let that name die!

Sorry I couldn't resist there Digger. Are you hung like that horse I used to race called Bonecrusher?

Good job Kevin.

I did use the "don't know" button a bit so as not to impact on the final figures, but it has inspired me to put forward a few nominations next year.

I'd have no problem recieving an email about voting.

The 177th poster made about 180 posts in total. Some of these are dormant, or they post very infrequently.

So 177 may be as good as you will get for this. Its a pretty high response for for any sort of poll.  :)

As for spam.
Our experience at work, in terms of using our customer database for auto email, no matter that the customer has supplied his email--and really everyone communicates that way, if he doesn't 'opt-in' to receive adverts, invites to seminars etc, we should not be sending them.

The email he provides is for normal business communication, relating to ongoing discussions etc. And this would apply to a small percent of our database-not everyone.

I have no problem receiving email from CR or any other poster, but many of the 6000 odd might.

Kev,

Perhaps another project could be to ask existing CR's (via the site), and new ones (when they join), whether they wish to receive email news / important notices / etc in the future, and if they do, allow them to subscibe on-line.

Once they are in, they then have to be offered the opportunity to "unsubscribe" whenever you mail them, but with notices kept to a minimum, and reassurance that mail-lists are secure, this should not be an issue for most people.

Well KT, I for one really apprecaited the email message as I only visit infrequently but still feel a strong connection with CR.
I've voted now and would be happy to receive ANY emails that CR deemed worthy of sending.
Whilst I'm at it ... Merry Christmas to all
Rob

PS - on a very personal note, this year has been terrific for me having finally found a way to run sub 5min ks ..... not a big deal for most I know but a huge milestone for me

Excellent KT. I got my spam today and was happy to receive it. Voted now and was thinking this would be a great idea on Transitions (the Aussie triathlon forum) as well. Do you mind if I copied (okay, ripped off) your categories over there?

Thanks

Kevin

Thanks for the e-mail (both wording and content).  I think the fact that CoolRunning is now an Incorporated Association, as well as the opt-out features, should be sufficient to avoid any unpleasant repercussions about a mass mail-out.

It's a part of my day to day job to be a devil's advocate.  It drives everyone crazy, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

PS Congratulations on the incorporation.

Kevin,
Thanks for the email. I used the "don't know" option a lot as I haven't run most of the races etc being on the western side of Australia. If I had the opportunity/knowledge to put on a few  other "WA" options then I would have done so.
I appreciate the email that you did send as I've just managed to start checking out the sites and boards again after a sizeable break.
Have a great Xmas and a wonderful 2006!

Well done Kevin in putting it together, & to all the inspiration passed on to the rest of us by Plu, LL & others over the year.

Still only a few more votes than last year though   , with CR numbers picking up in Melbourne especially I would have thought.

Maybe that email can go out @ the time of nominations next year...it did seem to be favourably received by members.

Well done to the winners, a couple of surprises for me.

The don't knows are always going to be big, for example, I didn't run a marathon or ultra, my club isn't listed and so on.

But a bit of good fun to see what the majority think & feel.
