What's with people running with full makeup on, and more often that not leaving a trail of perfume behind them that smells like they emptied the bottle out?

I see quite a few girls out running caked in make up, with not a hair out of place and every time I just have to wonder why? Are they expecting to pick up a random stranger on the footpath as they jog by? Do they really not get how overpowering the smell of perfume is in their wake?

Does a face caked in makeup not hinder the sweating process? How do they not end up with a sweaty, drippy, runny mess of a face? Makeup must be a lot more resistant than I ever imagined!

Small note... I don't mean to sound anti-women, I marvel at the achievements of female runners just as much as my male counterparts. I am a bit anti-makeup and generally prefer my wife not wear any, she looks great au natural. But anyway, this is a soapbox, so I don't need to explain myself, right?!

I would run without pants before I would run without make up. There are basic standards that I need to meet regardless of whether I am scrubbing the toilet or running and it has nothing to do with getting picked up by some random!

When I run I'm on a mission so I'm generally make-up free. Adding to this is I often run at 0500hrs so I jump out of bed, into training gear and out the door so the last thing I'm worried about is make-up....the only time you might see me in make-up is if I have to run after work, then I wouldn't remove it before a run.

Beats me, I never have and never would and I hate perfume at the best of times as it gives me a headace, I hate running past someone who has seemingly doused themsevles in the stuff.

I participate in the Aths Victoria winter and summer comps and notice that having a full face of makeup is pretty common amongst the younger girls, I put it down to a mixture of peer pressure ("everyone is doing it") and insecurity but it's pretty funny seeing it melt off their faces by the end of the meet.

Then again I wear very little makeup day to day aswell, I don't get it really, I've got good skin so why cover it up and who needs to spend all day fiddling and fussing and reapplying the stuff?

No harm in making an effort to look good no matter if it's running, going shopping, or hanging the washing out.

In saying that, I am not a big fan of perfume!!!!!

I hate being skunked when I am running.

Its all to do with your attitude, if you look good, you feel good, if you feel good, you will perform well.

I have really fair, blotchy skin & definitely don't look better without. I also run @ 0500 & get up @ 0440 to get ready. Noone can see me but it makes me feel better & for that I won't apologies. That said I don't do perfume for a run, just deodorant, if that's ok!

I totally agree, I'm lucky to get make up on for the day let alone for a run, freckle face and all. Ponytail that is serious commitment to do make up pre am run.

I occasionally run with a friend and always surprised by her eyeliner until I remember she had it tattooed on. Looks weird.

Too true. Can't stand the smell of smoke. Walked past someone the other day smoking after I had run 30km and It was revolting...

As for the makeup, only ever have it on if I'm running after work and can't be bothered taking it off. The sweat pretty much does that anyway.

I don't run in make up simply because I'm such a sweaty Betty that it would run off in 5 minutes and be a waste of good product.  I don't mind if others run with or without make up or pants for that matter.  Whatever floats your boat.

I don't find the makeup or perfume offensive. Although no deodorant is certainly not good form unless that runner likes 'the loneliness (or solace) of the long distance runner'.
Many of us men do put stuff on before we leave for a long run too - vaseline (even if you can't perform puppetry you need to be safe down there), sunscreen, deoderant and of course bandaids (on nipples). ;)
The girls may need their own tricks.

Thanks you TB-I sometimes wonder if people judge mar for wearing make up and it's clear  from this that there are those that do although I don't understand why. I don't stink, I don't smoke while running (or at all) so if I want to paint pink & green polka dots on my face, who cares!?

Sure, anybody can do whatever they want, that's their right and nothing to do with me. Doesn't mean i'm going to understand why though and I posted wondering that, what the thinking was behind wearing the stuff. Seems pointless to me, but maybe you makeup wearing folks think i'm some kind of hobo for rolling out of bed, putting my kit on and going out of the door without preening myself lol.

Your wife may be a fresh faced beauty but some of us look like Haggis without makeup. My other half doesn't know what I look like without makeup and I prefer it that way!  And the chicks whose perfume makes you feel sick obviously wear cheap perfume-I wouldn't waste my perfume by wearing it on a run!

Maffrew I haven't worn makeup since I was about 18 except for the occasional brides maid gig. I can't handle the feeling on my face.  But some women really love it - I guess its like some women like long hair others like short. It's all about personal choice and expression.

I don't wear make up (except on the rare occaision) as I hate the feeling on my face and as I have sensitive skin regardless of what type I wear it usually gives me some kind of a reaction. Ive given up spending money trying to find one that works.

I certainly couldn't imagine wearing it while running and I don't understand why people would (but that's their choice).

the way I look at it, the time I save by not putting on make up (or doing my hair) in the morning is more time I get to spend running, and the more time I get to spend running means the faster I become! ;)

Do I look like a troll in day to day life because of this? Probably. Do I care? No!

I have to say I was a little surprised to see quite a number of girls (probably late teens) lining up for Run Melbourne with extensive make-up on! I'm not talking just a lick of mascara here - this was the full works - foundation, powder, blusher, eyebrow pencil, etc. They certainly out-glamorous-ed me!! But then I remembered when I was that age - peer pressure is a big thing, and I wasn't too confident myself of appearing anywhere in public without my shield of make up then, either. So I guess there's lots of different reasons people might doll themselves up before a run.

For myself, I wear some make up to work (personal preference) and if I go for a run or go to the gym after work I'm not going to waste the time to wash my face first - I'll do that after! In the mornings, the less that I need to do before getting out the door the better :)

Blech - I couldn't stand to run with makeup on!

I like to wear makeup when I go out (i.e. socially, work etc.) but the first thing I do when I get home is wipe it all off - nothing feels better than a clean face.

I've always thought it would be bad for your skin to run with it on because it would clog all your pores, and on race day I'm more worried about running well than about flawless looking skin!

Having said that, I am almost surgically addicted to my sunglasses when running because I feel more comfortable when wearing them - maybe that's how some women feel about makeup.

As for perfume, I never wear the stuff. I do wear Pure Fiji body butters/oils/lotions which have a scent - not sure how strong it is when I run past people.

I don't understand the running-with-makeup thing either.  I know of a couple of ladies who seem to wear make-up.  To me, it looks plain strange.

I'm definitely not anti-make-up though.  I wear moderate amounts of it to work every day.  So I guess that makes me enjoy my running make-up free even more!

Seriously? So just because someone doesn't wear makeup (to go running or otherwise) they deserve to have their partner cheat on them?

I could only admire others who go the extra mile to keep their relationship.
I for one use my run as a time of solitude, not to encourage onlookers to spoil it.

Interesting thread. I see this often (at the gym more so as well) I really don't understand it and could never ever be bothered to put make up on for a run or workout, or want to!
But each to their own, whatever makes you feel good, you don't need to justify it to others.

Guys, I don't think Ponytail was saying partners should cheat or that one must be a Stepford wife to keep a partner but I think it shows respect for yourself and your partner if you make the effort to be clean, presentable and capable of indulging in physical activity with energy and enthusiasm.  Anything that increases self esteem, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone is a good thing, yeah?

I'm a bit disturbed at people turning up to events smelly, even if they forgot the deo.  Even if you ran there, you still should only smell of fresh sweat, not a stench.  Or am I weird for showring before an event?

I mostly run early mornings and there's no way I'm putting makeup on prior to a run. If I run in the arvo and I happen to have makeup on then I always take it off first...it just feels nicer not to be sweating through makeup.

I must sit somewhere between the extreme of makeup-every-waking-minute and none at all. I wear it most days (but not running obviously) but equally as comfortable without it.

My ex-asshat husband cheated on me but not because of 'letting myself go'...simply because he's a complete and utter tool. I actually hope I meet my future partner just after a 20km run. If he can fall for me at my sweaty worst...

I actually cannot believe your other half has never seen you without makeup ponytail. Do you sleep in makeup? How do you pull it off? I'm not having ago but it must get tiring..

you chics really have no idea do you.
on behalf of all men can i clarify that a scantily clad non-makeup wearing sweaty puffing running female is a GOOD look.
to be honest this sight is the only reason i ever run road events.
thanks.

Ok, let me rephrase for you UB... I actually hope I meet my future partner after I've just spent 3 hours getting ready for the races and I'm wearing a new $400 dress. If he can fall for me at my tizzy worst...
